About the Author
Mark Canepa is a member of the Central California and South Carolina chapters of the Tripoli Rocketry Association, an international organization devoted to the subject of high-power rocketry. He is also a member of the National Association of Rocketry. He is the former editor of The Central Valley Rocket News and he has authored numerous articles on high-power rocketry that have appeared in Extreme Rocketry and Sport Rocketry magazines. His coverage of rocketry events includes launches throughout the United States and in 2004 he covered LDRS23 for Extreme Rocketry. Mark flew his first model rockets by Estes as a young boy and then as a teenager in the San Francisco Bay Area. In the mid-1990s he discovered high-power rocketry and has since flown rockets at local, regional and national events. Mark has successfully obtrained his Level One, Level Two, and Level Three certifications, and in 2000 he held Tripoli's national altitude record for clusters in the Open Class. In his professional life, Mark is a trial attorney, who has practiced in California for sixteen years. his articles on the legal and medical profession have appeared in state and national periodicals including California Lawyer, California Physician, Kitplanes Magazine, Medical Economics, Los Angeles Lawyer, and Civil Litigation Reporter. Mark is also licensed to practice law in the states of New Mexico, South Carolina, and North Carolina. Mark received his undergraduate degrees in history (1985) and journalism (1986) from San Francisco State University and his Juris Doctorate from the University of California, Hasting College of the Law, in 1988. Mark and his wife, Valerie, currently reside in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

A necessity for the high-power rocket enthusiast

Modern High-Power Rocketry 2 is an ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL guide to the sport of flying and safely recovering large model rockets. This edition is thoroughly updated from the 2002 edition; it is much thicker (387 pages vs. 234) and discusses many of the changes and advances that have occurred in the last three years. The book is well-written and is jam-packed with very clear photographs and illustrations.

It covers the major areas of high-power rocketry, including: motors (several brands of solids as well as hybrids); motor assembly; igniters; basic construction features; electronics; altimeter bays; dual deployment; clustering; scratchbuilding, etc. It also covers many of the "little things" that are so very helpful in insuring a successful flight: BP calculations, shear pins, mach-breaking issues, static ports, eyebolts and U-bolts, switches, parachute packing technique; nose-weighting technique; cost-saving measures in construction; anti-zippering, etc. Safety codes, sample sets of Level 3 forms, a list of rocketry websites, and an extensive bibliography round out the book.

This book is a must-have for anyone who is (a) thinking about entering the sport of high-power rocketry or (b) already engaged in the sport. I wish it had been around way back, when I started...

Great for the beginner

I am an experienced model rocketeer. This book was a terrific introduction to high power - all the way to Level 3. I might have given it 5 stars, but the two-column per page format made it difficult to read, and too often the photos were not on the page where the text referred to them (too much page-flipping). I would blame this on the publisher not the author. I especially enjoyed the individual stories of people making their certification attempts. In fact, I am going out this weekend to do my Level 1 certification. Thanks for the help, Mark.

Missing chapter on High Power

I found this book very informative with lots of good information. Especially if you are a beginer and have or want to join NAR and/or Tripoli and go through their certification levels. But if you are like me and the nearest club and club launch site is over two hours drive away this becomes problematic. Also consider the initial cost of joining Tripoli or the NAR and the yearly renewal fee. There is a whole aspect of High Power Rocketry barely mentioned in the book. That is Amateur Experimental Rocketry. Your do not have to be a member of either NAR or Tripoli to apply for an FAA waiver for your own launch site anyone can. Granted you will not be able to purchase manufactured high power motor reloads as most companies will not sell to you unless you have a NAR or Tripoli card and certification. But there is nothing stopping you from making your own high power rockets, reloads and motors. The book can be improved with a chapter on Experimental Rocketry and how to apply for your own FAA waiver. Four Stars as the book is not complete.

The juxtaposition of works delivered to diverse audiences is deliberate, inasmuch as it is designed to demonstrate that the same principles are applicable to the sermon and theological treatise alike, that in the Orthodox Christian tradition there is no separation between ethics and doctrine, but rather that Christian living and theology are one indivisible reality, because Christ, the measure of all things human and divine, created and uncreated, is One. Divided into two parts, Praxis and Theoria, this book covers a wide range of topics, based on key Scriptural passages and the writings of some of the greatest masters of the Christian spiritual life, all of which are held together by criteria which are born not of speculation but of the face to face encounter with the living God.

Dr. Christopher Veniamin is a spiritual child of elder Sophrony of Essex and Professor of Patristics at St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in South Canaan PA, where he has served for the past 20 years. He is also Professor of Patristic Theology and Dogmatics and Assistant Director of the newly-established PhD Program in Orthodox Studies at the Antiochian Orthodox Institute in La Verne, CA. He received his first degree in Theology from the School of Theology in the University of Thessalonica, and his doctorate from the University of Oxford. Professor Veniamin is an author and President of Mount Thabor Publishing.

About the Author
Dr. Christopher Veniamin was born and raised in London, England, of Greek Cypriot parents, is a spiritual child of Elder Sophrony of Essex, and Professor of Patristics at St. Tikhon s Seminary, in Pennsylvania, USA. He is a graduate of the School of Theology in the University of Thessalonica, and holds the doctorate in Theology from Oxford University, where he studied under the Most Revd Dr. Kallistos Ware, Metropolitan of Diokleia. His doctoral thesis, The Transfiguration of Christ in Greek Patristic Literature: From Irenaeus of Lyons to Gregory Palamas, was a diachronic study of the meaning of the Transfiguration in Patristic theology, spanning a period of some thirteen centuries. Professor Veniamin has produced numerous articles ranging in subject from the Apocryphal writings of the New Testament to Euthanasia, he is the publisher of the seminal works of Archimandrite Zacharias Zacharou (The Enlargement of the Heart, The Hidden Man of the Heart, and Remember Thy First Love), and has edited and translated, from the original Greek into English, the first complete edition of the sermons of Gregory Palamas (Saint Gregory Palamas: The Homilies), for which he also wrote the introduction and detailed scholia.

Immense Hopefulness in these Pages

Christians of the West have an ambivalent relationship with "human nature," unsure of its role - if any - in salvation. There may be a few explanations for this: the negation of the body implied by Descartes' "I think, therefore I am"; the irrelevance of a material dimension to faith suggested by the Reformation's "sola fide"; and the shunning of the flesh by Puritanism as the "tool of the devil." Many in our culture, then, may carry a subconscious belief that human nature is, if not unnecessary, at least neutral in the pursuit of salvation, and that, after all, "what really matters is the soul."

"The Orthodox Understanding of Salvation" is an ideal salve for these wounds. The opening paragraphs - relating a story by the author about an encounter with a saintly monk - set the tone for all that follows. "...I realized that the reason why Father Sophrony's words rang so true that day is because of the wealth of meaning which Salvation has for us in the Orthodox Church" (p. 14). In fourteen chapters of readable style and length, "The Orthodox Understanding of Salvation" explores that "wealth of meaning," and - an equivalent pleasure - gives to the reader a glimpse of what, by the grace of God, is possible for his own life.

Exploring the implications for humanity of the two natures of Christ, chiefly by reflection on the Great Feast of the Transfiguration, this work by Dr Christopher Veniamin helps to restore a full and whole - and sane - sense of how Christ came to save the whole person. There is immense hopefulness in these pages. Too, for a slim volume the content is sufficiently broad: the author visits ancient Christian luminaries such as St Cyril of Alexandria and St John Chrysostom, but also reflects on modern problems such the euthanasia case of Terri Schiavo and the theological implications of church pews.

"The divine purpose for the human race, however, is seen in the union of our human nature to the divine Person of Christ, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, in its being raised to the right hand of the Father" (p. 15).

"This is how salvation is understood in the tradition of the Orthodox Church; not in merely moral or ethical terms, but as the attainment of Christlike perfection. This is the purpose of our human existence - to become by divine grace what Christ is by nature" (p. 65).

"Thus, the human person, created in the image of God, is only fully and properly such as a member of Christ's Body, and our communion with God involves the body, the soul, and the spirit. The emphasis, therefore, is on the human person's communion with God on every level of existence: the physical, that of the soul, and also that of the spirit. Human existence is embraced in its entirety; it is healed, sanctified and transfigured in God, and at the same time, the union of the created with the Uncreated signifies a transcendence, that is to say, the raising of the human person to the right hand of God the Father, which means above and beyond necessity and all the limitations of created existence" (p. 84).

American gun culture, she argues, developed not because the gun was exceptional, but precisely because it was not: guns proliferated in America because throughout most of the nation’s history, they were perceived as an unexceptional commodity, no different than buttons or typewriters.

Focusing on the history of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, one of the most iconic arms manufacturers in America, Haag challenges many basic assumptions of how and when America became a gun culture. Under the leadership of Oliver Winchester and his heirs, the company used aggressive, sometimes ingenious sales and marketing techniques to create new markets for their product. Guns have never “sold themselves”; rather, through advertising and innovative distribution campaigns, the gun industry did. Through the meticulous examination of gun industry archives, Haag challenges the myth of a primal bond between Americans and their firearms.

Over the course of its 150 year history, the Winchester Repeating Arms Company sold over 8 million guns. But Oliver Winchester—a shirtmaker in his previous career—had no apparent qualms about a life spent arming America. His daughter-in-law Sarah Winchester was a different story. Legend holds that Sarah was haunted by what she considered a vast blood fortune, and became convinced that the ghosts of rifle victims were haunting her. She channeled much of her inheritance, and her conflicted conscience, into a monstrous estate now known as the Winchester Mystery House, where she sought refuge from this ever-expanding army of phantoms.

In this provocative and deeply-researched work of narrative history, Haag fundamentally revises the history of arms in America, and in so doing explodes the clich�s that have created and sustained our lethal gun culture.

Topically Interesting but Flawed Book

This intriguing analysis of the role of firearms in the history of American culture hinges upon the premise that the major American gun manufacturers (principally Winchester, Colt, and Remington) created the market for increasingly lethal firearms, just as other American manufacturers created markets for sewing machines, refrigerators, and other massed-produced consumer goods.

Quoting from factory correspondence, invoices, patent applications, and other documents from corporate archives, the author contends that firearms were initially "unexceptional commodities" of an emerging industry that came to be fueled by "federal government capital, patronage, [and] guaranteed markets"--especially warring European nations, which became anchor points in "the international arena" in which "the American gun business first survived."

Citing the iconic "One of One Thousand" Winchester 1973 lever-action rifle as an example of gun-industry fiction, the author quotes from a 1936 letter written to a customer by Winchester executive Edwin Pugsley, who scorned "the mystery and hokum" not only of the "One of One Thousand" rifle but of the gun industry itself. Underscoring the "unexceptional commodity" of firearms, Pugsley wrote that "a part of a billet of steel might be made into a gun part and another part of the same billet into a mowing machine, and the part which went into the gun barrel would have no more mythical properties than its brother in the mowing machine."

At its best, this new book sets aside the continuing debate over gun rights in America by focusing on gun manufacturers and their role in creating, promoting, and continually reshaping a mythology about the relationship between Americans and their firearms. Unfortunately, however, both the contents and the narrative structure of the book are marred by the author's over-reliance on anecdotal and third-hand sources, and by amateurish gaffes that she or her editor should have caught and corrected.

To cite one of the more embarrassing of these gaffes, the author spends several pages highlighting the role of Theodore Roosevelt in promoting the "manliness" of hunting and shooting, and of firearms overall. But rather than quoting directly from Roosevelt's numerous articles and books, the author instead refers to a T.R. biographer whom she identifies as "Desmond Morris." Considering that the biographer to whom she is referring, Edmund (not "Desmond") Morris, won a Pulitzer Prize for the first of his three internationally-known books on Roosevelt, any author or editor with normal eyesight and access to a search engine would have caught this blatant error.

Overall, with the exception of the factory data and correspondence which the author has researched and brought to light, this book is topically interesting and is a useful addition to the cultural history of an important American industry. The book is flawed, however, by a meandering narrative--especially the author's digression into the spiritualism of Sarah Winchester, and her conjecture that the bizarre California mansion built by the emotionally unstable widow of the Winchester founder was prompted by her guilt about the lives that were taken by Winchester rifles.

Both the Winchester mansion (popularly called the "Winchester Mystery House") and the life of Sarah Winchester have been the subjects of authoritative articles and biographies, most notably Mary Jo Ignoffo's 2010 book, "Captive of the Labyrinth: Sarah L. Winchester, Heiress to the Rifle Fortune." That too is well-documented, an attribute which is too often absent in "The Gunning of America."

Demythologizing American gun culture

In this well-researched work, Haag demythologizes American gun culture. Arguments about guns, she observes, have for such a long time focused on questions of gun ownership and gun regulation, and often these debates have obscured the gun industry. In telling the story of the Winchester Corporation, Haag challenges us to consider the ways in which the gunmakers' drive for profit is fueling gun culture (and even gun violence) today. "One answer to the question, 'Why do Americans love guns?'," she writes, "is, simply, that we were invited to do so by those who made and sold them at the moment when their products had shed much of their more practical, utilitarian value" (xviii).

Haag is not anti-gun, but she challenges us to consider the history of how we have become so ardently pro-gun. This history, she maintains, illuminates new ways of addressing the problem of gun violence in our nation, ways that are more focused on accountability for the gun industry rather than on gun ownership.

Profit is a powerful force that will defend its own interests at an enormous cost. THE GUNNING OF AMERICA challenges us to consider the ways that profit has fueled our American desire for guns, and how regulation of the gun industry must be a vital part of the process of addressing the overwhelming gun violence of our day.

I enjoyed reading about the history of Winchester

As one reader noted, it could have been edited down. I enjoyed reading about the history of Winchester, but there should have been illustrations of each gun the author mentioned. I am fairly neutral about gun ownership; I filtered out the "biased" parts, and enjoyed the history. And I'm not sure those who are knowledgeable about guns would describe a lever action rifle as a "semi automatic" gun.

Another fix for a Shadowrun addict

I love anthologies and collections and whatever else you call a bunch of short pieces by various authors. I love Shadowrun. So, right there, World of Shadows has me hooked. I won't say all the stories are winners, but, just about all of them are readable and have plenty of Sixth World flavor. Most of them require no previous knowledge of the Shadowrun world, just a willingness to get some magic in your cyberpunk and visa versa. I will mention that I was very excited to have a new story by Michael Stackpole, especially since it featured Wolfgang Kies, my favorite Shadowrun character. Patrick Goodman, Russell Zimmerman and Mel Odom have written Shadowrun novels I have also enjoyed. They have stories in here that should entertain other readers as much as they entertained me.

This is an amazing collection of Shadowrun short stories. Each author's story draws on a different aspects of the 6th world. Magic, Noir, Intrigue, Brawls, and the Matrix.
It's a great introduction to a plethora of Shadowrun/Cyberpunk authors.
