The Orthodox Understanding of Salvation brings together some of Dr. Veniamin's talks and articles, hitherto available in relatively little-known theological journals and periodicals, which pertain to the fundamental question of the purpose of human existence, to Salvation, as understood in the age-old and unbroken tradition of the Orthodox Christian Faith - the faith of the Patriarchs, Prophets, Apostles, Martyrs and Saints of our Lord, God and Saviour, Jesus Christ. This is a scholarly work, which aims to initiate the reader into the basic theological presuppositions of Patristic theology. The juxtaposition of works delivered to diverse audiences is deliberate, inasmuch as it is designed to demonstrate that the same principles are applicable to the sermon and theological treatise alike, that in the Orthodox Christian tradition there is no separation between ethics and doctrine, but rather that Christian living and theology are one indivisible reality, because Christ, the measure of all things human and divine, created and uncreated, is One. Divided into two parts, Praxis and Theoria, this book covers a wide range of topics, based on key Scriptural passages and the writings of some of the greatest masters of the Christian spiritual life, all of which are held together by criteria which are born not of speculation but of the face to face encounter with the living God.
Dr. Christopher Veniamin is a spiritual child of elder Sophrony of Essex and Professor of Patristics at St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in South Canaan PA, where he has served for the past 20 years. He is also Professor of Patristic Theology and Dogmatics and Assistant Director of the newly-established PhD Program in Orthodox Studies at the Antiochian Orthodox Institute in La Verne, CA. He received his first degree in Theology from the School of Theology in the University of Thessalonica, and his doctorate from the University of Oxford. Professor Veniamin is an author and President of Mount Thabor Publishing.

About the Author
Dr. Christopher Veniamin was born and raised in London, England, of Greek Cypriot parents, is a spiritual child of Elder Sophrony of Essex, and Professor of Patristics at St. Tikhon s Seminary, in Pennsylvania, USA. He is a graduate of the School of Theology in the University of Thessalonica, and holds the doctorate in Theology from Oxford University, where he studied under the Most Revd Dr. Kallistos Ware, Metropolitan of Diokleia. His doctoral thesis, The Transfiguration of Christ in Greek Patristic Literature: From Irenaeus of Lyons to Gregory Palamas, was a diachronic study of the meaning of the Transfiguration in Patristic theology, spanning a period of some thirteen centuries. Professor Veniamin has produced numerous articles ranging in subject from the Apocryphal writings of the New Testament to Euthanasia, he is the publisher of the seminal works of Archimandrite Zacharias Zacharou (The Enlargement of the Heart, The Hidden Man of the Heart, and Remember Thy First Love), and has edited and translated, from the original Greek into English, the first complete edition of the sermons of Gregory Palamas (Saint Gregory Palamas: The Homilies), for which he also wrote the introduction and detailed scholia.

Immense Hopefulness in these Pages

Christians of the West have an ambivalent relationship with "human nature," unsure of its role - if any - in salvation. There may be a few explanations for this: the negation of the body implied by Descartes' "I think, therefore I am"; the irrelevance of a material dimension to faith suggested by the Reformation's "sola fide"; and the shunning of the flesh by Puritanism as the "tool of the devil." Many in our culture, then, may carry a subconscious belief that human nature is, if not unnecessary, at least neutral in the pursuit of salvation, and that, after all, "what really matters is the soul."
"The Orthodox Understanding of Salvation" is an ideal salve for these wounds. The opening paragraphs - relating a story by the author about an encounter with a saintly monk - set the tone for all that follows. "...I realized that the reason why Father Sophrony's words rang so true that day is because of the wealth of meaning which Salvation has for us in the Orthodox Church" (p. 14). In fourteen chapters of readable style and length, "The Orthodox Understanding of Salvation" explores that "wealth of meaning," and - an equivalent pleasure - gives to the reader a glimpse of what, by the grace of God, is possible for his own life.
Exploring the implications for humanity of the two natures of Christ, chiefly by reflection on the Great Feast of the Transfiguration, this work by Dr Christopher Veniamin helps to restore a full and whole - and sane - sense of how Christ came to save the whole person. There is immense hopefulness in these pages. Too, for a slim volume the content is sufficiently broad: the author visits ancient Christian luminaries such as St Cyril of Alexandria and St John Chrysostom, but also reflects on modern problems such the euthanasia case of Terri Schiavo and the theological implications of church pews.

"The divine purpose for the human race, however, is seen in the union of our human nature to the divine Person of Christ, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, in its being raised to the right hand of the Father" (p. 15).
"This is how salvation is understood in the tradition of the Orthodox Church; not in merely moral or ethical terms, but as the attainment of Christlike perfection. This is the purpose of our human existence - to become by divine grace what Christ is by nature" (p. 65).
"Thus, the human person, created in the image of God, is only fully and properly such as a member of Christ's Body, and our communion with God involves the body, the soul, and the spirit. The emphasis, therefore, is on the human person's communion with God on every level of existence: the physical, that of the soul, and also that of the spirit. Human existence is embraced in its entirety; it is healed, sanctified and transfigured in God, and at the same time, the union of the created with the Uncreated signifies a transcendence, that is to say, the raising of the human person to the right hand of God the Father, which means above and beyond necessity and all the limitations of created existence" (p. 84).
"The Orthodox Understanding of Salvation" should be on the bookshelf or nightstand of everyone who wonders what it means to become "partakers of the divine nature" (II Peter 1:4).

As a Western Christian, I've found this book useful to me in understanding some of the variations in beliefs. However, it gets repetitive at times, and it seems like the repetition could be phrased in more useful, nuanced phrases.
