About the Author
For more than 20 years, O. S. Hawkins served pastorates at the First Baptist Church in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and in Dallas, Texas. He is president of GuideStone Financial Resources, which serves 200,000 pastors, church staff, missionaries, doctors, and other workers of various Christian organizations with their retirement needs. He is the author of more than 25 books and preaches regularly at Bible conferences, evangelism conferences, and churches across the nation.

Preachers Sourcebook

Nelson's Annual Preacher's Sourcebook, Volume 3, compiled by O.S. Hawkins, serves as a great starting point for sermon ideas. If you are experiencing preachers "writing block" (is it called "sermon block"?) pick up this volume and jump start your sermon prep process.
This book is divided into two parts: sermons, and articles. The sermons are in an expanded outline form, and include message from the likes of James MacDonald, Adrian Rogers, and eight other pastors. Each pastors sermon section cover a specific theme and includes about 13 different sermon outlines based on that theme.
The articles presented relate to practical guidance of pastoral duties. There are articles on sermon preparation, on preaching the funeral service, on preaching through the significant Christian calendar days, and the pastors role in the wedding experience. Included in the back pages of the book is a section to record church events, dedications, marriages, and sermons preached.
The value contained within the Preacher's Sourcebook well exceeds the $24.99 price tag. The sermons presented are, nearly all, of a topical nature. I prefer a more expository approach, personally. However, as previously stated, this is an excellent resource for getting your mind positioned properly for sermon preparation, and it provides another perspective outside of your own.

Tried it out and it worked as advertised.

O. S. Hawkins, the editor of the Preacher’s Sourcebook, has done a fair job of putting together a library of sermons and teaching lessons that young or inexperienced pastors can use to get by. I enjoyed using the resource to prepare a recent sermon on Psalm 100, though I felt guilty doing so.
Speaking on a purely pragmatic sense, the book did it’s job. I tested it on a Sunday where I had been given little time to prepare as a hospital chapel I volunteer for needed someone in a pinch. Knowing I wanted to write a review on this book, I took the bait. After searching for only an hour or so, I found the sermon I wanted to use as a test. I figured that a review wouldn’t be as fruitful to my readers if I hadn’t fully tested out the book.
The “test” went fine. I tweaked a sermon from the book to fit my context and it was certainly passable. I wish I had the recording, but something tells me I wouldn’t really be able to use it, as the book holds the copyright to my sermon, not me since I didn’t write it. That is something to keep in mind if you ever use the sourcebook as your base material. I do think that the material for weddings and such would be particularly useful, as they aren't things a pastor does every day.
Overall, I say it sufficed to complete the job, but I wouldn’t use it more than I have to. I would feel guilty for using it too much. Having said that, I expect I’ll be taking it on the ship with me in the future for use if a chaplain isn’t available. It does, after all, have a lot of good resources.

A Good Source Book for Anyone

Nelson's Annual Preacher's Source Book is a compiled text written by various authors who are also ministers. The Contents is divided into two sections: sermons and articles. There are 535 pages in these two sections followed by Special Occasion Registries covering forms for Baby Dedications, Baptisms and Confirmations, Funeral Registrations, Funerals Log, Marriage Registrations, Marriages Log, and Sermons Preached. These forms are empty so a Minister may use them for record keeping, I think. This section is followed by NOTES showing where each author obtained references for their topics. The Index is mainly a listing of words and on what pages of the text each word can be found on...much like the Concordance is arranged. Last is a CD of the text which can be used by either a MAC or PC.
I have always wanted to read one of these books out of plain curiosity. My question had been, Do preachers really use a book of sermons and outlines to plan their own weekly sermons? Now I knew it could be done, but would not a preacher want his sermons to reflect him/herself and his/her beliefs? However, I can imagine many ways in which this book can be used. A minister can indeed take the book and follow it from page one in planning a whole year's worth of sermons whether he had to have one, two or even three sermons a week. A preacher could even choose a topic and look up articles and sermons in this book to assist him in putting his thoughts together. My favorite idea is one in which a lay person could take this book and use it as a devotional book. Beginning with the first sermon/article and reading/meditating on one a day would be fantastic for those of us who have studied the Bible in so many ways we may be looking for a different approach.
The thoughts and ideas of the contributors of this source book have given me new insights into scriptures I already understood, but I still appreciated the new thoughts. I have also been able to get new understandings of scriptures which I had not been able to fully understand before. For these reasons I not only recommend this book to ministers, but also to lay people. Read the book. Meditate on what the authors are saying, pray God will open your understanding and enjoy finding out how experienced ministers think and feel. But most of all, enjoy the stronger relationship between you and the Lord Jesus Christ that this book should help develop.
