Chocked full of primary resources, creeds, statements and theology (with the sad omission of Seventh Day Baptists for unknown reasons), this is reference material for any library needing Baptist theological evolution over the past several hundreds of years. Some of the early creeds included (dozens of pages worth) are worth the price of the book. Track Baptist spirituality from adventerous and fervent Biblical passion for God to safe, dry and bland (in some cases) 20th Century efforts at man's theology. But buy the book for the early statements of theology...you will have a goldmine.

History of The Baptist Confessions of Faith

What should be the most important thing in choosing a church? Does the church profess the Bible is the word of God inerrant; that Jesus Christ is God, Lord and Savior? What is believed by the Pastor, what is believed by the members of the church and what is taught inside the church building? I certainly would not join a church that denied the contents of the Bible. Before joining a local congregation I would want to know what is taught at that particular congregation of believers. A confession of Faith is a profession of beliefs to what is true; a declaration of the understanding of the Bible and the truth of its contents. This book is an ambitious work in containing volumes of confessions and giving a very brief reason why a local church or group of churches came together to declare what the Bible taught.

Working hypothesis of this book is the Baptist denomination has roots in England and the English Reformation: Starting with Wycliffe in the 15th century and William Tyndale translating the Bible into the vulgar English language. In the 1538 King Henry VIII was obliged to license Bibles into the English language. Calvinism and Anabaptism were imported to England about the same time. The Anabaptist taught that only the converted, who confessed Jesus as Savior and Baptized were believers and members of the Body of Christ. Puritans were Calvinist who wanted to purify the Church of England of Bad Doctrine. They consider good doctrine what is Calvinistic. Puritans wanted to change the Church from within. English Separatism wanted to separate form the English church and for the most part adopted the belief in believer's baptism. The English Separatist was Calvinist. This was the start from what we know today as the Baptist church.

Forerunner Confessions, Anabaptist Confession of Faith are so called in this book and consume the first 78 pages of this work. By 1562 there were thirty-thousand Anabaptist who came from the Netherlands in England. Their beliefs and expression had to be hidden for fear of the death penalty awaited those holding Anabaptist beliefs during the reign of Queen Elizabeth. In 1580 Robert Browne, in a county with Dutch Artisans, worked in the establishing congregationalism. Browne later fled to the Netherlands and still later rejoined the government church. In 1609 John Smyth baptized himself and others who joined that particular Separatist movement. Later he sought to join a longer established Mennonite congregation. A short confession of 1610 was written by John Smyth's group as a statement of Faith as consideration for the Mennonite church. The idea of the local congregational authority in choosing church leaders including the Pastor was originally an Anabaptist concept. These are the three points the author uses to argue a connection between Baptist and Anabaptist.

This book contains five Anabaptist confessions plus two other statements about church organization. The Anabaptist argued for obedience to the government, but none of its members were to be part of the government. The argument that government and the sword is an instrument of God, but believers were not to use the sword and such could not be part of the Government. The confessions have strong statements against any member of Christ's body taking any sort of oath. There is also a call for shunning of those members who are excommunicated from their congregation. A group led by Thomas Helys made their own confession and separated from the fellowship of John Smyth with these theological questions. English Separatist and Baptist did not argue as such. The Anabaptist was not Calvinistic such as the early Baptist was. This is also easily recognized in comparing the different confessions.

A large segment of this book deals with confessions of Particular Baptist who were Calvinistic and General Baptist who some of their confessions were more Arminian. Some of the Particular Baptist was in response to Quaker Evangelism. There was a thought going around that Particular Baptist was being converted to Quakerism. About the Author

John Fox is professor of sociology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Fox earned a PhD in sociology from the University of Michigan in 1972, and prior to arriving at McMaster, he taught at the University of Alberta and at York University in Toronto, where he was cross-appointed in the sociology and mathematics and statistics departments and directed the university's statistical consulting service. He has delivered numerous lectures and workshops on statistical topics in North and South America, Europe, and Asia, at such places as the summer program of the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research, the Oxford University Spring School in Quantitative Methods for Social Research, and the annual meetings of the American Sociological Association. Much of his recent work has been on formulating methods for visualizing complex statistical models and on developing software in the R statistical computing environment. He is the author and co-author of many articles, in such journals as Sociological Methodology, Sociological Methods and Research, The Journal of the American Statistical Association, The Journal of Statistical Software, The Journal of Computational and Graphical Statistics, Statistical Science, Social Psychology Quarterly, The Canadian Review of Sociology and Anthropology, and The Canadian Journal of Sociology. He has written a number of other books, including Regression Diagnostics (SAGE, 1991), Nonparametric Simple Regression (SAGE, 2000), Multiple and General-ized Nonparametric Regression (SAGE, 2000), A Mathematical Primer for Social Statistics (SAGE, 2008), and, with Sanford Weisberg, An R Companion to Applied Regression, Second Edition (SAGE, 2010). Fox also edits the SAGE Quantitative Applications in the Social Sciences (QASS) monograph series.

Sanford Weisberg is Professor of Statistics at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.� He is also director of the University’s Statistical Consulting Service for Liberal Arts, and has worked with literally hundreds of social scientists and others on the statistical aspects of their research. �Professor Weisberg earned a BA in Statistics from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. also in statistics from Harvard University, under the direction of Frederick Mosteller.� The author of more than sixty articles, his research has primarily been in the areas of regression analysis, including graphical methods, regression diagnostics, and statistical computing.� He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and former Chair of its Statistical Computing Section.� He is the author or co-author of several books, including Applied Linear Regression (third edition 2005, Wiley), Residuals and Influence in Regression (with R. D. Cook, 1982, Chapman & Hall), Applied Regression Including Computing and Graphics (with R. D. Cook, 1999 Wiley).� He has several publications in areas that use statistics including archeology, plant sciences, wildlife management, fisheries, and public affairs.

Excellent, not only for regression models but for R in general

This book would be a great single volume introduction to R for social scientists and others who do a lot of work with regression models. As may be obvious from the title, it is also a great companion to anyone learning about regression models, e.g., in a statistics course. And if you are more experienced but not deeply knowledgeable about regression diagnostics, you will gain a very solid and valuable grounding in those.

The book has three particularly salient features: (1) the first 150 pages are a very nicely encapsulated introduction to R with hands-on examples that highlight many of the things that are covered in more detail later in the book. If you want to learn R and do regression models, this material is the perfect background. (2) the remainder of the book presents those models in more depth, building up piece by piece and with clear social science examples. Of special note is the attention to regression diagnostics -- which are often mentioned in other texts but not presented in such a practical way as here, with clearly worked examples and interpretations. (3) much of the content relies on the authors' R package "car", which provides a great set of tools for regression models, especially plotting, confidence interval estimation, and model diagnostics.

As an experienced R user, I enjoyed the book more than I expected: it taught me some very useful things about diagnostic tools, and demonstrated the "car" [companion to applied regression] package in a convincing way. I've known about car for years, but hadn't used it much; now I expect to use it regularly, especially for plotting.

Although the book calls itself a "companion" to other texts, it is actually self-contained if you already understand the basics of regression models in general. It avoids mathematical exegesis and focuses instead on exactly how to get things done in R ... and even more importantly, on how to understand what R is doing, how to interpret the results and work with the resulting objects, and how to avoid common problems. I'm going to start highly recommending this text to others who are new to R.

Gentle intro to applied linear regression and "car" package

This book is an excellent how-to guide to applied linear regression modelling. Even though it's called an "R companion" to Applied regression, it provides just enough of the two worlds - theory and basics of R programming - to carry out linear regression analysis on a day-to-day basis.

When choosing a book that would refresh my knowledge about linear regression, I was thinking about three:

- Linear models with R, by J. Faraway
- Using R for Introductory Statistics, by J. Verzani and
- An R companion to Applied Regression, Fox et al

I have fixed on the Mr. Fox's book mainly because he is the author of the "car" package and I wanted to learn more about it, mainly in the context of diagnosing linear regression models.

The book has completely met my expectations with solid applied coverage of the following areas:

- Visual data inspection
- Linear regression models
- Generalized linear regression models
- Diagnostics of LM and GLM

I highly recommend this book for two peculiar features. First, it feels like the author builds his knowledge of linear regression together with the reader, thus greatly facilitating learning process (this fact indeed is not surprising as Mr. Fox has been a university professor for years!). Second, the book heavily uses "car" package, of which Mr. Fox is the developer. "Car" package, on the one hand, helps increase the quality of regression models one produces and, on the other, decreases time needed for building a model.

Great Value

This is a fantastic book and one of those books that I feel was worth every penny. I bought it to accompany Fox's regression text, so I was disappointed that it didn't correspond perfectly, chapter for chapter. However, it's such a good book that I soon forgave the one drawback. I'll try to update this later on (I took the class last year, so a little hazy on exact points)...I just saw that there were no reviews and wanted to rectify that.

Doesn't apply to all situations. To put in perspective, read the chapter on your own country. Then assume it has about the same accuracy for other countries. A significant portion of business negotiations are based on the personality of the other party. Keep that in mind.

Excellent review

I benefited from the practice questions and exams. Excellent resource. It offers a good review of common problems/clinical issues with review questions following each topic. The CD-rom is useful, too, and worked perfectly for me. It contains three practice exams with 175-207 questions. I was scoring around 72% on the practice exams and passed the AANP exam yesterday! I would definitely recommend it.

CD is flawed- Mosby will send you a new one

Mosby did discover that the CD is flawed somehow but they will send you a new one at no charge. Don't let the issue of the CD influence you in terms of the book. It is a great review book. There are lots of test questions- more than most other review books, along with rationale. FNP Review book

I used this book front to back to prepare for the AANP exam. I did find a few errors, but the explanations were so good, that I KNEW when there was a mistake and was able to actually build some confidence, instead of fretting about it. I worried a first, because I was only scoring in the 68% range on the practice tests in the beginning. On the test that counted...I was in the top 6% nationally! I used several prep books and think this book was the most helpful. The CD ROM was very helpful. Thank you for all the work that went into writing this.

About the Author
Suzanne Welander began canoeing in 1999. Since then, she has completed hundreds of trips exploring Georgia s diverse streams or eddy-hopping down the Ocoee in her whitewater canoe. She has a special passion for wilderness, stoked by multi-day self-supported canoe trips in remote parts of Alaska, Canada, Montana, and Arizona, in addition to canoe-camping getaways in wild corners of Georgia. Suzanne s curiosity continually draws her to explore sections of rivers she has not yet paddled and to monitor the changes at those she revisits. She s also a half-decent whitewater canoe slalom racer. When she isn t paddling or writing about rivers, Suzanne works for a North Georgia organic farm and plays saxophone in the Seed and Feed Marching Abominable. Suzanne lives in Atlanta with her husband who's also an avid canoeist, their young son, and a small flock of chickens.
Veteran paddler Bob Sehlinger has led canoeing trips throughout eastern North America and is the former president of the Eastern Professional River Outfitters Association. He is the creator of the Unofficial Guide travel series and a recipient of the Lowell Thomas Gold Award for journalistic excellence. Founder and publisher of Menasha Ridge Press, Sehlinger lives in Birmingham, AL, where he enjoys mountain biking and playing the drums.

This is the worst publication on this subject I have seen so far

This is the worst publication on this subject I have seen so far. It does not have directions how to get to the landings, GPS coordinates is the only reference and it is not enough and is not helpful. I will have to look for another book.
