James Hollis, PhD, is a co-founder of the C. G. Jung Institute of Philadelphia and Saybrook University's Jungian Studies program, director emeritus of the Jung Center of Houston, vice president emeritus of the Philemon Foundation, and an adjunct professor at Saybrook University and Pacifica Graduate Institute. He resides in Houston, Texas, where Dr. Hollis conducts an analytic practice. His other books include "Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life: How to Finally, Really Grow Up" (2005); "Why Good People Do Bad Things: Understanding Our Darker Selves" (2008); and "What Matters Most: Living a More Considered Life" (2009).

So helpful we read it aloud.

Hollis's book, as usual, is truly excellent. My husband and I read it aloud over the winter, as I was coming to a new cycle in recovering from grief and loss. Hollis makes very complicated ideas accessible, without losing the rich, deep meaning of the Jungian concepts. I talked about this book and recommended it to several clients. This is a book that helps one grow through any difficult time. Hollis helps us understand "hauntings" as complexes. I especially appreciated his section on guilt, shame and betrayals. He ends with a hopeful chapter on living the unlived life.

This is the single best book I have ever read about the impact of one's history on one's current life experience. James Hollis's bredth and depth of knowledge about the psychology of "complexes," emotionally-charged experiences resulting from past and sometimes mysterious forces, are woven seamlessly together with brilliant and illustrative examples from literature, history, spirituality, philosophy and art to produce a magnificent study of the workings of the human psyche...and its hauntings by the ghosts of the past.
