Conventional medical science on the Chinese art of Tai Chi now shows what Tai Chi masters have known for centuries: regular practice leads to more vigor and flexibility, better balance and mobility, and a sense of well-being. Cutting-edge research from Harvard Medical School also supports the long-standing claims that Tai Chi also has a beneficial impact on the health of the heart, bones, nerves and muscles, immune system, and the mind. This research provides fascinating insight into the underlying physiological mechanisms that explain how Tai Chi actually works.

Dr. Peter M. Wayne, a longtime Tai Chi teacher and a researcher at Harvard Medical School, developed and tested protocols similar to the simplified program he includes in this book, which is suited to people of all ages, and can be done in just a few minutes a day. This book includes:

•The basic program, illustrated by more than 50 photographs
•Practical tips for integrating Tai Chi into everyday activities
•An introduction to the traditional principles of Tai Chi
•Up-to-date summaries of the research literature on the health benefits of Tai Chi
•How Tai Chi can enhance work productivity, creativity, and sports performance
•And much more

Tai chi can be described as “meditation in motion.” Blending low to moderate aerobic activity with meditation, tai chi offers health benefits with only a minimal risk of injury. Rewards of tai chi may include greater flexibility and range of motion, increased coordination, better breathing, and more efficient posture. It is a useful exercise in preventing falls. It also improves balance and movement in people with Parkinson’s disease. As scientific research on this training regimen moves forward, tai chi might prove valuable in other ways, such as managing chronic pain and enhancing mood. Authors Wayne (a Harvard Medical School researcher and tai chi practitioner-teacher) and Fuerst (a medical writer) distill the essence of tai chi into eight active ingredients: awareness, intention, structural integration, active relaxation, strengthening and flexibility, natural breathing, social support, and embodied spirituality. They also present a practical, simplified 12-week tai chi training program that requires 45–60 minutes per day. Photographs illustrating poses and exercises are included. Tai chi is an intriguing form of mind-body exercise that can readily be integrated into routine daily activities. --Tony Miksanek

Review
“The Harvard Medical School Guide to Tai Chi is a significant milestone in the integration of Eastern and Western medicine. It deftly summarizes the scientific evidence for the healing potential of this traditional Chinese system of body movement and gives readers practical advice for using it in everyday life. I recommend it highly.”—Andrew Weil, MD, Professor of Medicine, University of Arizona, and author of 8 Steps to Optimum Health

“Dr. Wayne gives us a magnificent and useful contribution for the betterment of our health and well-being through the proper integration of Tai Chi into our lives.”—Herbert Benson, MD, author of The Relaxation Response and Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School

“Peter Wayne is that rare individual who is sufficiently ‘bilingual’ to introduce Tai Chi to a largely open-minded yet skeptical medical community and to sensitively and movingly celebrate its timeless poetry, power, and appeal. This is a book for all to learn from and enjoy.”—David Eisenberg, MD, Harvard School of Public Health and the Samueli Institute, and Former Chief of the Division of Research and Education in Complementary and Integrative Medical Therapies, Harvard Medical School

“Evidence has shown that unhealthy lifestyle is the cause of most if not all chronic conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease. Dr. Wayne’s book, with his expertise in medical research and Tai Chi, is a significant step towards modernizing Tai Chi—essential to making Tai Chi a central part of practical and effective solutions to the epidemic of chronic disease.”—Dr. Paul Lam, director of the Tai Chi for Health Institute and author of Teaching Tai Chi Effectively and Tai Chi for Beginners

“Peter Wayne has long been a leader in scientific research into how Tai Chi boosts health and well-being. In this brilliant book, he blends rigorous Western science with Eastern wisdom to present an illuminating and thoroughly modern view of a wonderful, life-enhancing art. I recommend it highly to anyone interested in Tai Chi, from novice to advanced practitioner.”—Yang Yang, PhD, director, Center for Taiji and Qigong Studies, and author of Taijiquan: The Art of Nurturing, The Science of Power

“Highly readable and deeply informative. . . . This book has the potential of once and for all dispelling any lingering myths that Tai Chi and Qigong, and Western science’s growing understanding of its uses, are anything less than a profound health revolution that can help prevent or treat the majority of health challenges, and ultimately may save society hundreds of billions if not trillions in future annual health care costs. The Harvard Medical School Guide to Tai Chi may well be that point we look back to and say, ‘That was the tipping point that unleashed the building wave of Tai Chi, which has now transformed modern health care.’”—Bill Douglas, founder of World Tai Chi & Qigong Day and author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to T’ai Chi & QiGong

Great blend of Tai Chi science and spirituality
By Brian Hines
I'm an avid Tai Chi practitioner (nine years in, still have a lot to learn) who is loving this book. It was recommended by my Tai Chi teacher who, like Peter Wayne, teaches integrative medicine at the college level.

Wayne is an excellent writer. He presents Tai Chi from all angles in his Eight Active Ingredients of Tai Chi model. Seems right on to me. I enjoy Tai Chi for many reasons, physical, mental, social, spiritual (using that term in a non-supernatural sense). I'm open to the farther-out Chinese medicine side of Tai Chi, filled with talk of qi, meridians, subtle energy flows, and such, but don't find that a belief in all this is necessary to enjoy my practice.

So I really like how Wayne looks at Tai Chi from both a scientific, rational, research-based point of view, and also from an experiential, intuitive, practice-based point of view. Like Tai Chi and the Taoist philosophy to which it is strongly related, this book harmonizes seeming yin-yang opposites appealingly.

I'm only several chapters into the book, but wanted to share a review ASAP because I'm enjoying it so much. I've read quite a few books about Tai Chi, most of which are much more traditional in style and substance. "The Harvard Medical School to Tai Chi" is unique. It will be enjoyed by Tai Chi beginners and old-timers alike, including those who aren't interested in taking a class but still want to explore what Tai Chi has to offer.

Wayne presents old concepts and practices in fresh ways. I heartily agree that introducing people to Tai Chi by having them learn a lengthy form (standard sequence of movements) can be intimidating for many. When I started learning Tai Chi, I'd already had about a dozen years of intensive training in karate and another hard style martial art, where I learned many lengthy kata (forms).

Yet initially I was baffled by the Tai Chi "24" form, one of the most basic. The moves and transitions are tricky, whether or not someone has done other sorts of movement training before. Thus Wayne's presentation of a Simplified Tai Chi Program, with a focus on simple stand-alone movements, is a great idea.

Tai Chi needs to be part of a person's daily life, not just something to be practiced a few times a week in a class. Wayne says that Tai Chi will change the way we pick up heavy objects, walk along a sidewalk, engage in conversation (or an argument) with somebody, and so much else. Absolutely.

I've taken up longboarding (on a elongated skateboard) at the age of 64. Reading Wayne's description of "pouring" from one side of the body to the other made me better realize how akin moving on a longboard/skateboard is to Tai Chi movements. Continuously carving in an "S" fashion down an asphalt trail with linked turns on my longboard bears a lot of resemblance to what Wayne calls "pouring."

The more fluid we can be, the more like water, the better our Tai Chi becomes. Also, the better our life becomes. Read this book. You will benefit from it.

East meets West Tai Chi Expresso
By Sonu Singh
I am really enjoying reading the book I tend to skip around to the sections that are interesting me at the moment.

First impressions are that it is for every level basic as well as advanced.

It's particularly well written, with lots of nice quotes, favorites follow:

'Hall of Happiness' by GRAND MASTER CHEN MAN CHING, snippet:
'Let us fortify ourselves against weakness and learn to be self reliant, without ever a moment's lapse. Then our resolution will become the very air we breath, the world we live in; then we will be as happy as a fish in crystal waters. This is the joy which lasts, that we can carry with us to the end of our days, if you can, what greater happiness can life bestow?'
'knowing others is intelligence, knowing yourself is true wisdom, mastering others is strength, mastering yourself is true power' Lao Tzu

The 8 active ingredients framework is a very effective model of representing the key ingredients of a successful Tai Chi practice (some of which I did not pay attention too before), he elaborates why these are so important, and it makes total sense:
'1. Awareness, Mindfulness, Focused Attention'
'2. Intention, Belief, Expectation'
'3. Dynamic Structural Integration'
'4. Active Relaxation of Mind and Body'
'5. Aerobic Exercise, Musculoskeletal Strengthening and Flexibility'
'6. Natural Freerer Breathing'
'7. Social Interaction and Community'
'8. Embodied Spirituality, Philosophy and Ritual'

The writings convey an understanding of the benefits of Tai Chi with explanation in a very rational way, that is palatable to the western audience.

The Tai Chi instructions form allows a sampling of tai chi practice. There is a week by week progression for beginners which has 5 Tai Chi movements, so it has an in-built training course, which is probably more suited to a beginner practice:
1. Raising the Powers (Hands)
2. Withdraw and Push
3. Wave Hands Like Clouds
4. Grasps the Sparrows Tail
5. Twist Step, Brush Knee

Minor amount of repetition I felt on specific points but that may be intentional to drive the point home.

I would describe it as an 'East meets West Tai Chi Espresso!'

Good but could be better
By Culturally curious
This is a revision of my initial review, 3 weeks after the original, once I tried to use the exercises to start my 12 weeks to a healthy body, as the title proclaims. I considered revising downward to 2 stars on the basis that its main purpose is not sufficiently met.

I ordered this book because I am not very satisfied with a 3-month course I am currently taking, which I feel gives inadequate emphasis to performing the exercises to derive the most benefit from them. Instead we concentrate on memorizing the order for the sequence of hundreds of movements which appear to be randomly repeated. This sort of regimentation probably derives from the martial arts which tai chi comes from, but is tedious and not necessary for the health benefit. My course also gives no attention to breathing, and in my mind is not sufficiently bilateral in regard to the body. Maybe these defects would be addressed in a later course, but I don't want to wait. As this book says, there are many types of Tai Chi and one of the virtues of this book is that it breaks from the mind-set of apprenticeship in which the rewards come only after years of training with a guru.

I was also interested in reading the scientific basis for the benefits of Tai Chi, which I have read often and believed, but was interested in how the claims were substantiated, and I was not disappointed. For example, the discussion of balance gives a good explanation of how balance is achieved normally and how Tai Chi helps maintain or restore balance. The discussion of integration tai chi with western medicine was very good, too.

Furthermore, we are told how each exercise specifically addresses different physical functions, including relaxing and stress prevention or reduction. This knowledge and the helpful tips and reminders increase the benefit of each exercise. In addtion, the exercises are mostly taught in components so you can learn the movements of arms, torso and feet in stages to put them together so that benefit is maximized.

Thus it is painful to say I have a major disappointment with the book which has only increased as I have tried to actually use it: the way the exercises are formatted and even given short shrift in proportion to related topics. Also, while most of the text is interesting, such as the background and types of tai chi, some is too much like proselytizing and centered around the author's experiences. I think the history of the gradual integration of tai chi into the mainstream did not need to be so thoroughly documented.

To me Tai Chi doesn't exist without the exercises, yet the exercises comprise less than 40 pages buried in 277 pages of text. One must dig hard to extract the physical actions required to perform the exercises from a ruminating narrative in paragraph form. This is rather cumbersome and obscures the exercises--why not use list form for the components of the actions, and even for the benefits and the tips as well? Also, there are photos only for a few exercises--the most complicated ones--for which the attempt to portray the actions in stills is mostly a lost cause. I even wondered if it would have been better to use stick figures to capture the action.

Most, but not all the exercises are clearly described. I was mystified by the instruction to 'simultaneously drum the navel and lower back, and then simultaneously drum the lower abdomen and sacrum.' Even the dictionary did not clear my confusion about the difference between the lower back and the sacrum, so I just assumed 'back' meant behind the navel area and carried on.

But far worse was the exercise for Lift Hands Standing Meditation, which barely into the beginning of the description gives senseless and incomprehensible instructions about 'having the weight on the back foot'--when one's feet are parallel, only the toes of one foot moved to point at an angle--so neither foot is 'back.' Also, does one 'have' weight on a foot, or does one 'keep' it on that foot, or 'shift' it to that foot??? I don't know what it means here.

The next exercise, about shaking one's body bit by bit travelling down the body is also problematical. The use of the the word 'shake' is unclear when it comes to, for example, the chest. And does one shake one's leg freely as one does one's arms if one is standing on both feet or is this a different kind of shake? At this point, I became so frustrated I put the book away for a week.

Space that could have been used for better presentation of the exercises was also given over to ruminations on spirituality and social networking, things of value, but addressed elsewhere all the time. I began to feel like I was reading a tiresome religious tract at some points. Yet, the discussion of Qi was inadequate considering it is referred to often later in regard to the exercises.

Editing seems to have been hasty: There is a lazy habit of using special terms, such as kwah, and acronyms such as TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) as though the reader committed them to memory after encountering them the first time a few days earlier, but not including them in the index so one can refresh one's memory, not to mention that saying 'traditional Chinese medicine' would be even clearer. There is some sloppy punctuation which gives the book an unprofessional feel and raises a reliability issue.

The writing style as a whole is sometimes overly academic--long sentences that take a while to get to their point due to ruminating or reasoning supplied along the way. This is what academics are used to and so they perpetuate it, but it is not necessary any more than legalese is necessary to achieve its intended effect. For the general reader, they would do well to emulate Hemingway or at least serious journalism. I began to wonder if parts of the text were transcriptions of dictations or lectures. The structure of the writing could be much improved.

After writing this review in its initial form, I came across other reviews, which for some reason did not appear when I was considering the purchase. All those glowing reviews seem to be made by members of the tai chi subculture whose 5 stars derive from the pleasure they feel because this book documents that tai chi has been recognized mainstream medicine. I wonder if any of them actually tried to follow the instructions for the exercises or if they were so familiar with them that they couldn't see the inadequacies.

Overall, this book is worth buying, depending on your purpose. It does a decent job at filling the void for those for whom a spiritual quest is not the main reason for exploring Tai Chi, and I hope to benefit from the exercises it provides,if I can figure them out.

Background material for Rogue One, but still interesting on its own
By Carrie
Catalyst is definitely setting the stage for the Rogue One movie, but it's interesting enough to stand on its own. The book introduces us to the Erso family - genius scientist Galen, adventurer/explorer Lyra, and their daughter Jyn. Jyn, one of the main characters in the upcoming movie, is young enough in the book to be a peripheral character. We get a sense of her background and personality, but Catalyst focuses on others - primarily Jyn's parents, an ambitious Republic officer named Orson Krennic, and a smuggler named Has Obitt.* Our old "friend" Moff Tarkin is the main supporting character.

* Not a spoiler - just a name comment. I spent the entire book thinking "obituary" when reading Obitt. Intentionally distracting name, or am I just a troublesome reader? :)

Catalyst is divided into three sections:

Part One: Life During Wartime - Set during the final days of the Republic/Separatist conflict. Krennic realizes that his former classmate, Galen Erso, is the only person who can help him with a secret weapon. Most of this section relates to how Krennic works to put Erso under his sphere of influence.

Part Two: The Pursuit of Peace - Set during the early days of the Empire. Most of this section deals with Galen working to create an improved energy source while Krennic uses Galen's research for other purposes. Lyra pursues her suspicions about the energy project. We also see the Empire starting to take over certain worlds in the pursuit of raw materials.

Part Three: Dead Reckoning - Everything comes to a head. Can't say much without spoilers!

Catalyst was a quick read, very entertaining and worth the time. It was fun to see some familiar characters in their earlier years and as they work toward where we see them in the movies and/or animated series. The character development was believable, and the book did a good job showing the upheaval of the Republic to Empire transition. The only reason I went with 4 stars instead of 5 is some of the worldbuilding dragged. I think that was a necessarily evil for the purpose this book plays in leading up to the movie, but I'm reviewing it as a standalone story.

Great set up for Rogue One.
By David B
I really enjoyed this book as I did with the authors last book, Tarkin. This book does a really good job covering the time period between the original and prequel trilogies.

The author is really great at writing interesting stories centered around villains in the Star Wars universe. This book is very much in same vein as Tarkin in that respect. I found this book went into great detail in expanding apon the knowledge fans already have about the Star Wars universe.

I feel like this book has done a great job setting up readers to see Rogue One when it comes out. Right now this is probably my favorite of the new canon books.

Inside The Empire
By Michael Hicks
Catalyst, a prequel novel to the upcoming Star Wars: Rogue One film, is a tightly-focused character piece revolving around the dreaded Empire's initial steps in constructing the moon-sized weapons platform, the Death Star (Note: that's no moon!).

James Luceno focuses his narrative on the Erso family and the Empire's engineer Orson Krennic. After Galen Erso and his wife, Lyra (pregnant with their baby girl, Jyn, who will be the all-grown-up lead heroine in Rogue One), are jailed, Krennic begins a long-game of strategy and manipulation to bring Galen, an energy systems researcher and pacifist, into the Empire's employ.

While the Erso's are a sympathetic bunch, this is really Krennic's book, in my opinion, and he's the most interesting and dynamic figure in the novel. Luceno draws on various characters from the Clone Wars animated series and prequel trilogy, with this book overlapping Episodes II and III, some of whom I had to Google to figure out why they were important. Not having seeing any of Clones Wars and having blanked out most of the prequel stuff, I had to do a little bit of research while reading to sate my curiosity, but it's hardly mandatory. But, again, Krennic is really star of the show, here.

Krennic is a classic Empire villain through-and-through. He's a bold chessman, duping and moving those unfortunate enough to orbit him into executing his larger plans, oftentimes unknowingly, and I really appreciated the level of subterfuge and guile this dude's capable of. He's cold, cunning, and calculating, and demonstrates exactly why the Empire is a supreme power to be feared and fought. Using the on-going battles against Separatist forces, Krennic all but gaslights Galen into working for the side of evil, and Catalyst demonstrates how easy it could be for otherwise good men to be swayed into the employ of fascism through domineering propaganda and the normalization of hate and corruption.

Star Wars has always been political, but to read this book so soon after the Electoral College appointed Donald Trump - a man who campaigned on a platform of racism and fear, and who lost the popular vote by at least 2 million ballots at the time of this writing - President of the United States hit a few still-raw nerves for me, but Catalyst is certainly a timely read given all that. Set firmly within the burgeoning fascistic Empire, the manipulation of good by evil, and the various degrees of in-fighting within the Empire, make for nicely dark subject matter, but Luceno keeps things light enough to prevent his story from being overwhelmingly dark. There's room for hope, particularly as Lyra scrappily fights to save her marriage and family. As Jyn states in the Rogue One trailer, rebellions are built on hope, and, frankly, I'm with her.

The Twisted Muse: Musicians and Their Music in the Third Reich, by Michael H. Kater

Is music removed from politics? To what ends, beneficent or malevolent, can music and musicians be put? In short, when human rights are grossly abused and politics turned to fascist demagoguery, can art and artists be innocent?
These questions and their implications are explored in Michael Kater's broad survey of musicians and the music they composed and performed during the Third Reich. Great and small--from Valentin Grimm, a struggling clarinetist, to Richard Strauss, renowned composer--are examined by Kater, sometimes in intimate detail, and the lives and decisions of Nazi Germany's professional musicians are laid out before the reader.
Kater tackles the issue of whether the Nazi regime, because it held music in crassly utilitarian regard, acted on musicians in such a way as to consolidate or atomize the profession. Kater's examination of the value of music for the regime and the degree to which the regime attained a positive propaganda and palliative effect through the manner in which it manipulated its musicians, and by extension, German music, is of importance for understanding culture in totalitarian systems.
This work, with its emphasis on the social and political nature of music and the political attitude of musicians during the Nazi regime, will be the first of its kind. It will be of interest to scholars and general readers eager to understand Nazi Germany, to music lovers, and to anyone interested in the interchange of music and politics, culture and ideology.

Amazon.com Review
In literature, music is the food of love and soothes the savage beast; in politics, it can be perverted by the worst of causes. So claims Michael Kater in his compelling study of music and musicians in the Third Reich, The Twisted Muse. What did it mean to compose music for Hitler and his Nazi regime? Kater asks; can artists working in a climate of oppression and fascist demagoguery dismiss their roles by claiming they created or performed for the sake of art alone? To answer these questions, Kater approaches his subject from two different angles: first, he examines the lives of musicians living under the Nazi regime--from little known musicians struggling in the orchestra pit to the great and famous, including Richard Strauss and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. Next, he examines the role music played in the Third Reich and the ways in which the Nazis manipulated it as propaganda.

The Twisted Muse is part biography, part history, but it is wholly fascinating. Michael Kater's unique approach to the subject of music and musicians as tools of the state ensures a wide audience, not only among music lovers, but among all those interested in politics, culture, or psychology.

From Publishers Weekly
The fate of musicians in Nazi Germany is a controversial subject that has been dealt with only sparingly in the past, mostly in the course of studies of such superstars as Wilhelm Furtwangler, Herbert von Karajan, Elizabeth Schwartzkopf, Otto Klemperer and Bruno Walter. Kater, a cultural historian based at York University in Toronto, who has already written books on jazz in Nazi Germany and on how doctors fared under Hitler, has done prodigious primary research, much of it in hitherto unexamined files, to emerge with a mountain of fresh material. He does indeed discuss the well-known names-finding in most cases that their behavior falls within a gray area rather than the stark black-and-white outlines so often presented by admirers or detractors-but also examines the fate of ordinary orchestral musicians, and of journeyman soloists and composers, some of whom were never known outside the country. He writes of the Nazis' frustrating attempts to create a valid contemporary music style free of "Jewish" and jazz influences, the role serious music played in the war effort and the remarkably different routes to survival chosen by composers as unlike as Richard Strauss, Hans Pfitzner, Carl Orff and Karl Amadeus Hartmann. A work this exhaustive and extensively footnoted is obviously not for a casual reader; but anyone seriously interested in the interface of art and a peculiarly threatening political culture will find it endlessly fascinating.

From Library Journal
This exhaustively researched book fills a conspicuous lacuna in 20th-century musicology. Kater, a Canadian researcher based at York University, presents a detailed, disturbing, but always compelling account of the musical scene in Germany during the Nazi era. Clearly and logically organized, the five chapters deal with the Nazi music bureaucracy, political compromise among music professionals, the persecuted Jewish and anti-Nazi musicians, music in educational and religious institutions, and the Nazis' concept of modernity in music and its impact on the leading composers and conductors of the time. Complex figures such as Richard Strauss and Wilhelm Furtwangler are treated thoroughly and dispassionately. Strauss emerges more sympathetically than in previous studies, while Furtwangler is shown to have been more odious in his thoughts and actions than previously believed. There is a great deal here to engage scholars and professional musicians as well as general readers interested in the study of music and ideology. Highly recommended for all libraries.?Larry Lipkis, Moravian Coll., Bethlehem, Pa.

Disappointing; regrettably unreliable
By Laon
I went to this book for some background information on the Nazi reception of modernism in music. Unfortunately, though I found it well written, and I share Kater's mordant view of the composers and musicians who were prepared to futher their careers by going along with Nazi policies, I found that I would hesitate before I cited or applied factual claims from the book without first getting independent confirmation.

The problem is that I do know one related area reasonably well, the Nazi reception and perception of Wagner. And what Kater says there is not just wrong, but wrong in ways that I find worrying. It's not that I think that Wagner is the most important issue in relation to Third Reich cultural policies - far from it. It's just that when you find that you can't trust what a book says about a field you do know, it leaves you worried about its claims in the areas you don't know.

Three examples. First, Kater wrote, "The evidence shows that although public stagings of Wagner operas nationally had been decreasing long before the onset of the Third Reich, and even more so after 1933, in absolute figures these performances still topped the list until 1942/43, with works by such composers as Verdi, Puccini, and Strauss well behind." [page 39]

In reality "public stagings of Wagner operas nationally" increased each year before "the onset of the Third Reich", right up to the 1932/33 season, but decreased immediately and dramatically after the Nazis took power, for the 1933/34 season, and that decrease continued and accelerated during the Nazi era.

And although Wagner had invariably "topped the list" under the Weimar democracy, with hundreds more Wagner performances each year than performances of any of his nearest rivals, in reality he quickly lost that position once the Nazis seized the cultural reins. Wagner had lost first place to Verdi by the 1937/38 season, regained it (by just 18 performances) in 1938/39, and then lost by hundreds of performances in 1939/40, slipping further down the ranks in subsequent years. Some people may find that surprising, but there it is.

Second, Kater wrote of Hitler's "autobiography, which he started writing while imprisoned as Landsberg in 1924-25, naming it _Mein Kampf_, not accidentally after Richard Wagner's own _Mein Leben_."

But there are two problems with Kater's claim that the title "My Struggle" is a sort of homage to Wagner's title, "My Life". One is that all that the two titles have in common is the word "My", like "My Apprenticeship" by Maxim Gorki, "My Life", by Bill Clinton, and so on. More importantly, Hitler actually called his book _Four and a Half Years of Struggle Against Corruption, Stupidity and Lies_. The snappier title, _Mein Kampf_, was chosen by Hitler's publishers.

Still, maybe Kater misread the tables of performance numbers. Maybe he didn't know Hitler's own title for his autobiography. Still, _The Twisted Muse_ is Kater's sixth book about the Third Reich and its cultural policies. Shouldn't a specialist, whose publishing history suggests he'd been working this territory for over 20 years when this book came out, know this stuff?

Which leads to my third example, the problem of Kater's Rosenberg quote. Kater derided the evidence, cited in Frederick Spotts' _Bayreuth_ history, that the Nazi ideologue Alfred Rosenberg was hostile to Wagner. Kater's supposed clincher, proving that Rosenberg was a fervent Wagnerian, was this quotation from Rosenberg's _Myth of the Twentieth Century_: "The cultural accomplishment of Bayreuth is perennially beyond discussion."

But in Rosenberg's book this sentence is not in fact part of a eulogy to Wagner, as Kater would have you believe, but the beginning of a criticism of Wagner that dismisses his theories and much of his work, especially the _Ring_ and _Parsifal_. The actual passage, from Book II, chapter 4, goes:

"The cultural achievement of Bayreuth will remain forever beyond question. But nevertheless, today a turning away from the basic teachings of Wagner has begun, away from the assertion that dance, music and the poetic art are forever linked in the manner proclaimed by him; and away from the assertion that Bayreuth was, in fact, the unchangeable consummation of the Aryan mystery."

Could Kater have read the one sentence he cited, then instantly closed his eyes and shut the book so that he never saw the next sentence, which happened to change Rosenberg's meaning completely? It doesn't seem possible. It's difficult to see how this quotation could be anything other than deliberately deceptive.

Kater, obviously, was running a very strong agenda, in relation to Wagner. Now, it's possible that someone can get carried away because of a controversy, and be unreliable only in that area while remaining scrupulously accurate in all other areas. But my problem is, I don't know. I read an statement by Kater about the Nazi reception of modernism, and I wonder, "But is that really true? Or if it is true, is it misleadingly selected?" And I can't tell. I can't rely on it.

Fortunately, there's another book covering the same territory, that passes the test of being accurate in areas I know, and that seems academically scrupulous in the areas I don't know. That's Erik Levi's _Music in the Third Reich_, published in 1994, also available from Amazon. Levi is no more impressed by Wagner's antisemitism than Kater is, or I am, but that doesn't drive him to start making stuff up, and that's important.

Therefore Levi's _Music in the Third Reich_ is the book in this field that I cite with confidence, and that's the book that I've kept. I recommend Levi's book. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this one.

Cheers!

Laon

Indispensable!
By Russel E. Higgins
Michael H. Kater's book "The Twisted Muse" is indispensable reading for any musicologist or serious music lover. The book discusses in rich detail the music and musicians of the Third Reich, a twelve year nightmare in Germany and Austria, that destroyed the creative spirit of every musician and composer living there. Mr. Kater explains the difficulty of being a musician in the Third Reich, and dramatically documents the disabling Nazi disease that infected every composer and conductor. There were no heroes, with the possible exception of Erich Kleiber who emigrated to Buenos Aires to begin a new artistic life, and Karl Amadeus Hartmann, a composer who silenced himself in Hitler's Germany and offered as much resistance to Nazism as he could. The rest were victims. or worse, perpetrators of Nazi horror. Some musicans joined the Nazi Party in order to survive and feed their families; other joined the Party to further their own careers. Knappersbusch, Furtwangler, Tietjen, von Karajan, and Boehm showed amazing duplicity toward one another, frequently acting like beasts. Cultured and well-educated Germans were sometimes reduced to the bestial level of a Goering or a Goebbles. In fact, Nazi Germany, as Mr. Kater points out, was an a veritable scorpions' nest of egomaniacal conductors and composers advancing their careers at the expense of colleagues. For example, the composer Hans Pfitzner -- one of the few serious composers the Nazis could showcase -- is particularly portrayed as an embittered, pathetic man, filled with anger and duplicity. Mr. Kater brings a new and fascinating perspective to such famous Third Reich composers as Carl Orff, Werner Egk, and Rudolf Wagner-Regeny, not evil men, but far from virtuous, who used Nazism for personal advancement. The author introduces the reader to little known German composers like Paul Graener, who suffered a particularly cruel and ignominious end; Max Trapp, a mediocre composer who wrote reams of kitsch for the Party; and George Vollerthun, a composer the Nazis needed so much that he survived a homosexual scandal in the 1930's. Mr. Kater traces the careers of these composers as well as those who left Germany --Hindemith, Schoenberg, Weill, Korngold -- with brilliant perspective. Of particular interest are the many pages devoted to the controversial Richard Strauss. Mr. Kater's thesis is that the Nazis made Strauss pay for his sins against the dictatorship by permitting Strauss's grandsons to be physically molested, by harassing Strauss's family in Garmisch, and by murdering twenty-six members of his Jewish daughter-in-law's family. Ironically, her husband, Strauss's only son, was a fervent Nazi of relatively high rank. In the final two chapters, Mr. Kater discusses the institutionalized "hausmusik" written for Nazi youth, the music for brass ensembles, and the battle music for the pagan youth festivals and SS concert bands. He also devotes intriguing sections to the Nazi's quest for a musical philosophy and a serious composer that imbued the Fascist philosophy. Mr. Kater's discussion of Hindemith as being the ideal man (modern, an "Aryan," not a twelve-tone composer) is interesting. But the Nazis never found their composer and never defined what serious Nazi music was to be. Mr. Kater documents his phenomenal study with over 1090 footnotes; sometimes a footnote will cite four or five independent sources, including letters, memories, documents, and diaries. In short, this is a magnificent study, probably the most intriguing, best written, and most comprehensive history of music in the Third Reich yet written.

This is a very comprehensive, well organized book that includes all the major facets of running a performing arts company. I would recommend it to anyone thinking of opening a company, looking to manage an existing company, or researching arts organizations. I especially appreciated the samples of documents that relate to all facets of running a company, this is especially helpful for those just starting out to ensure that their materials look professional and that specifics of documents aren't inadvertently omitted. It is simple enough for those without a background in arts management to understand, and detailed enough for those already in the business to find helpful. An excellent resource book!

From Library Journal
Frida Kahlo's cult reputation has been blossoming for over ten years, particularly among feminists. Rumors that Madonna is planning a film about the artist will probably generate mainstream interest in, if not understanding of, her disturbingly personal works. The complexities of Kahlo's painful, joyful, notorious, and gay life are well presented in the text. Despite obvious affection for the subject, Zamora neither glosses over Kahlo's nonconformity nor tries to make a martyr of her. Yet however fair, these biographical notes are sparse and anecdotal, whetting the newcomer's interest but not offering much to the informed reader. More important here is the collection of 75 color plates of the artist's original works. Of interest to the initiated because they comprise largely seldom-seen works in various Mexican collections, these plates represent the best collection now available of Kahlo's work. Recommended for most collections as a companion to Hayden Herrera'a Frida ( LJ 1/15/83), a readable and complete biography.

Great book!
By A Customer
Frida Kahlo is my favorite artist, so of course I love this book. Other reasons I love it: the pictures, which show Frida's exquisite beauty, the paintings (not any I haven't seen, though I still love seeing them), and the story, which told some things I did not know. Although I really like this book, it was not very in-depth. I already knew most of the information that was in it.

Get the Spanish version
By Enrique Torres
This edition is a pretty good overview of Frida's life with some outstanding colorful reproductions of her works. There is also a very satisfying collection of photographs, both in black and white and color, to cure the voyeur in you to see Frida as she really lived. For example, if you enlarge the back cover shot here you can see the cigarette in her left hand that she was apparently usually without. If you thought it was only the pain of her life that resulted in very few photographs of her smiling think again. The results of her heavy smoking habit produced a poor set of teeth that were blackened and not very flaterring; hence the rare smiling picture. The book has some rare photographs, including one of her laughing and her hideous teeth. The text is easy to follow and gives a whirlwind tour of Frida's life, complete with recollections by friends and other anecdotes. Included is a chronology, list of illustrations and a selected bibliography. My big complaint about this book, and it may you serve you if you are able to read Spanish, is that it is a short version of the original. I have run down a copy of the original Spanish book, "Frida: El Pincel de la Angustia" and it is highly recommended over this translated version. I cannot over state this recommendation . This version is almost like an abridged text by comparison. Case in point, the original has nearly four times as many pages! The abundance of pages is not filler either as it has many more photographs, paintings and more importantly, text. If you hunt around you can find the original at an affordable price. All in all this is a good addition, but not edition, to your library on Mexcian Art or personal Frida Kahlo book collection.

From Booklist
This delightful book by the author of Yoga for Wimps (2000) is chock-full of practical techniques to help the average person safely perform yoga poses. Austin has studied Iyengar yoga for several years, a style of yoga that often uses props such as blocks, blankets, chairs, and walls to deepen the experience of classic poses. In this book Austin shows both new and experienced practitioners how to use yoga props and provides partner exercises to improve the performance of poses. Clear explanations and numerous photos demonstrate how to make poses easier or more challenging. Having survived various injuries, some caused by overaggressive teachers, Austin seeks to make yoga fun and safe. She encourages the reader to trust the wisdom of the body. Her enthusiasm is infectious--it's almost impossible to read the book without getting up and trying some of her "cool tricks." Jane Tuma

Bring your practice to the next level.
By mary
I've had this book as an electronic book for a long time and bought a paper copy recently. I wish the author would do an update or a follow up book. I live in a rural community with not many opportunities for Alignment based or Iyengar inspired yoga. For a beginner or a more advanced practitioner this book would help. I sometimes teach some of my friends yoga at my house and if we have time, I will add a couple of the super stretches from this book. Don't be mistaken, there are more super stretches out there, but the ones in this book are a great start. I think ifyou've never done some of these tricks you will be amazed at how it brings your practice to the next level.

No other yoga books shares these secrets!
By Charles Norman
This yoga book is amazing! I own many yoga books, and they all have hints on how to begin particular yoga poses. However, this book has all those hints, and so many more. I especially love the fact that these "tricks" are all accompanied by large detailed photographs. Unfortunately, one thing though that this wonderful yoga book and all the yoga books I own fail to include is the fact that trigger-point therapy can relax and release muscles, making it much easier to stretch them after pressing on a trigger point with a blunt object, like a lacrosse ball. "The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook" is a book that helped show me how to release my hamstrings, psoas, and piriformis muscles so that I could rapidly advance in my yoga stretches.
