I love this guide
By Delaney
I love this guide. One of the best for insects, this definitely enhanced my learning experience in my entomology course. And now I find myself keeping this book in my bag everywhere I go. Really handy. With insects, you need to take a taxonomic approach to identify between families, this book lays out the differences for easier id. (In some scenarios a magnifying glass or dissecting scope is the most helpful.)

Perfect for school

This was perfect for my 9-yr old in 4th grade. They were studying insects for this year and this gave him more than enough materials to build a realistic insect model. My son loved this book and read it avidly before building his insect model. Great purchase for us!

The Missional Quest: Becoming a Church of the Long Run, by Lance Ford, Brad Brisco

When Christ calls people, he invites them on a journey―a journey taken together in community. We have reached a point in history, however, when we think of the church as a fixed place where isolated individuals show up, consume a Christian message, drink some coffee, and get on with their lives. The times demand, and the gospel proclaims, that we recover our identity as a church that is a people on a quest for the kingdom of heaven, formed intimately by a loving God and called onto a long journey for the sake of our neighbors and our world. In The Missional Quest you’ll learn how to take your church on a long run, and how to sustain yourselves and one another along the way, through the power of God for the sake of the world.

Review
"The Missional Quest is a practical guide for how to get everyone in your church engaged in the mission of Jesus. I dream of a church where 100 percent of the people are sold-out, surrendered and serving Jesus, and Lance Ford and Brad Brisco show us how to make it happen." (Dave Ferguson, lead pastor, Community Christian Church)

"Those who wonder why we need another book on missional church should read this one. Then you'll know. Lance and Brad have done a great job of putting the cookies on the shelf where we can all reach them. At this point in the movement we need this kind of practical 'how-to' guidance from coaches who have experience playing the game. These two missional leaders fit the bill." (Reggie McNeal, author of Missional Renaissance)

"Not only are Brad Brisco and Lance Ford great friends, they are also highly gifted colleagues deeply involved in helping to birth and nurture the missional church in America and beyond. This is a top-class practical resource to help any community live into its own missional future." (Alan Hirsch, author of The Permanent Revolution)

An Essential Guidebook for Journeying With the Missional Church
By Joshua Lee Henry
There have only been a handful of books that I have really, really anticipated the release of in the last few years. While there are always new books on the publishing horizon, there are only a select few that I eagerly await for their arrival. “The Missional Quest: Becoming a Church for the Long Run” (2013) by Lance Ford and Brad Brisco was one such book. I had it “saved for later” in my Amazon shopping cart since the day it became available for pre-order online. However, thanks to my friends at InterVarsity Press, I was provided a complimentary review copy in exchange for this honest critique.

While I know that at the time of this writing we are already more than halfway through 2014, I still contend that “The Missional Quest” is not only one of the best new books available for understanding the missional church, but is also one of the best books to date, as an introduction to the theological implications of the subject. Scripturally sound and full of practical advice, I recommend “The Missional Quest” as essential reading on the topic. But don’t just read the book, live its’ message, as echoed from the Old Testament prophet Isaiah: Here I am, SEND ME!

Divided into two parts –Section One: Fostering a Missional Mindset (How Should My Church Be Thinking?) and Section Two: Fostering a Missional Posture (What Steps are Necessary?), Lance and Brad spend nine chapters fleshing out what it means for a church to think with missional orthodoxy and live with missional orthpraxy. With back and forth chapters written by each author, Lance and Brad cover relevant themes such as the theology of the missio Dei (chapter one) “Rhythms of Inner Formation” (chapter two), and the missional opportunities presented by post-Christendom (chapter three). It is in these beginning chapters that the authors lay the foundation of a gathered and scattered church, explain the spectrum that exists between attractional-extractional and missional-incarnational, and promote a dependency on the Holy Spirit.

Perhaps my favorite segment of the book is chapters four through seven. Each of these chapters focuses on building authentic relationships and being intentional about incarnational mission. Starting with chapter four “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” the authors look at Jesus’ greatest commandment of showing love by creating vibrant communities, ministering to those next door, seeking the welfare of the city, and bringing the Kingdom of Heaven to earth. Chapter five presents a biblically radical case for hospitality and offers tangible insights to making it happen. Chapter six discusses the value of what are called “third places”, a term coined by sociologist Ray Oldenburg in his seminal book “The Great Good Place” (1989). Building on Oldenburg’s definition, the authors describe third places as “a public setting that hosts regular, voluntary and informal gatherings of people. It is a place to relax. It is a place where people enjoy visiting. Third places provide the opportunity to know and be known. They are places where people like to ‘hang out’ (p.136). Lance and Brad then cover the eight key characteristics of the conventional third place as defined by Oldenburg and essentially synthesis his work with that of Robert Putnam’s bestselling title “Bowling Alone” (2000) and Peter Block’s “Abundant Community” (2010). While these books are more sociological than missiological in study, with their acumens combined, Lance and Brad do an incredible job at highlighting the church’s opportunity for mission, our culture’s desperation for community, and the pitfalls of individualism that has undergirded our increasing postmodern society.

However, it was chapter seven, subtitled “Small Groups Becoming Missional Communities” that really grabbed my attention during my initial scan of the table of contents. Missional Communities seem to be all the rave right now. And while there have been whole books written on the subject matter (see for example “Missional Communities” by Reggie McNeal, and “Leading Missional Communities” by Mike Breen), there is still some confusion as to how a church can “launch” missional communities out of a preexisting small group structure. In a short and clear definition, Lance and Brad explain that “Misisonal Communities are groups of people who commit to living their lives with devotion of heart, mind, soul, and strength in the three spheres of relationship with the Lord” (p. 153). These three spheres, described by founder of the Vineyard movement, John Wimber as Father, family, field, or perhaps more commonly known as “up, in, and out”, courtesy of 3dm, are basically the Christian’s relationship to God, the Church, and the world. As Mike Breen has noted elsewhere, missional communities are not the end goal in and of themselves. But rather they operate as a vehicle to take people to the desired outcome of “oikos”, a Greek word meaning “household” or in this context, a spiritual family on mission. While Brad and Lance do not use the term oikos in their chapter, they do mention the Greek word “koinonia”, translated as fellowship or more accurately, partnership. They state that “It is a mistake to think of missional communities as groups that do mission together. We prefer to think of them as groups of missionaries” (p. 155). Therefore, they suggest building community around the mission, and providing opportunities for everyone to join in.

After outlining the principles of mutual commitment, accountability, and devotion, found in Acts 2:42-46, they then unpack several of the “one another” passages in Scripture and present the acronym “LIGHT” to help memorize and embody five missional habits. The letters in LIGHT stand for Listen to the Holy Spirit, Invite others to share a meal, Give a blessing, Hear from the Gospels, and Take inventory of the day. Similar to Mike Frost’s “BELLS” and Dave Ferguson’s “BLESS”, Lance and Brad describe how living by the acrostic LIGHT, taken from the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:14-16), “becomes the outline for the sharing portion of the group time” (p. 165).

Chapter eight tackles developing leaders, or servant followers, through the discipleship process, raising up and sending out the priesthood of believers, and equipping each and every church member in his or her fivefold ministry of Ephesians four. Finally, chapter nine addresses how to create a new scorecard for “success” in the local church by ultimately asking a series of self-diagnostic questions that measure the missional effectiveness of activity outside of the four walls of the church. Celebrating stories to create a “tipping point” for mission, embracing risk, and prayerfully discerning what God is already doing, are all also parts of “Having a Great Trip”, the heading of chapter nine. Finally, an appendix of the “Sending Passages” in the Gospel of John is included for personal or corporate reflection.

Lance and Brad are thinking practitioners and participant observers who provide an immense amount of wisdom. Through their ministry as authors, church planters, consultants, and co-founders of the Sentralized Conference in Kansas City, I am thankful for the voice and influence of these two in the continuing conversation of the missional church.

In closing I would like to take a moment to recommend all of the other books in the Forge InterVarsity Press series, especially, “Incarnate” (2014) by Michael Frost and “Sentness” (2014) by Kim Hammond and Darren Crownshaw

Read this book
By Karl Halverson
I would recommend that you read this book. Of course, if you're prideful like me, you'll be tempted to focus on some things that you might not agree with. But, honestly, there is only one problem with this book: if it is truly read and given credence in your life, it will completely mess with YOU and your connection to the institutionalization of the church (on the bright side, you'll be more like Jesus).

Brad and Lance give a concise, clear, humble and biblical portrayal of what it means to not only believe in Jesus but to be following Him and guiding others to follow Him in the mission of God in the world.

You won't find any quick fixes in this book. You will NOT find help with your Spring programming. You won't find encouragement that what you read recently in the Wall Street journal about being a good leader is of any help in the body of Christ.

What you will find is a call back to the foundation of what Christ has called you to in the world, both in the body of Christ and in the lives of those not yet a part of His body. You'll find guidance in the long obedience of actually making disciples, as opposed to training people to do things in the church. You'll be challenged to become a slave instead of a leader. You'll be inspired to begin, today, (no more wasting time) to give yourself to *people* rather than the system that promises to get people connected.

My life has been one of making disciples since I was a youth minister in the 90's, a cross-cultural servant in Central Europe during the 2000's and in the lives of college students/young adults/immigrant refugees for the past 5 years. I've found Brad and Lance's perspective and commitment (in their writings and through the conference they started three years ago-Sentralized Conference) to be risky, dangerous to institutionalism and, therefore, personally inspiring to me in my recent journeying as a disciple maker.

I'll be giving this to friends of mine who are working faithfully on staff at different churches, to give them fodder for the work God is doing in their hearts. My hope is that the Lord would use this book in the lives of many others, as they go, to move them out of themselves, their offices, their comfort and their master plans, into the lives of the masses who are waiting for someone to guide them in becoming learners at Jesus' feet, thus benefiting the lives of those around them and bringing honor to God.

Essential book for the missional church practicioner
By Clint Walker
I have been reading about and discussing ideas about what it means to be "missional" for years. Our church was even rewarded for being externally focused and reaching our community through going out and connecting with the people, civic organizations, and government we worked with by our Regional Leadership. Missional Leadership gets me excited about being a part of the church, and a part of the vision Jesus had for his kingdom (as opposed to mine or our kingdom).

Unfortunately, to be honest, much like terms such as emergent and community, I think the term is quickly bordering on being overused in church circles. I remember my denomination (ABC/USA) doing this big nationwide tour from my denominational headquarters to teach us what it meant to be missional. What we learned is that they liked missional slogans and lingo, but they really did not know that much about what the "missional church" conversation was all about. Instead they were seeking to re-brand the denomination a little to get more money for traditional missions and the United Mission funds of the denomination while really changing nothing about how they see and do church. My experience was much the same with other denominations I deal with these days in the federated church I serve.

Don't let the overuse of the missional nomenclature keep you from exploring what people who are really practicing and living missional church life have to say. Lance Ford and Brad Brisco are leaders in what the "missional church" conversation is really all about. And the Missional Quest is a fantastic book that balances church vision and philosophy with clear practical steps to grow one's church from truly living the kingdom of God in their community, neighborhood, and world.

The Missional Quest is very much a how-to book, but a how-to book that is more descriptive than prescriptive. Early on in the book, it takes on the importance of spiritual formation in the missional church. After all, if we are going to bring Jesus into the world, it kind of helps to know him and be connected with him intimately. For this reason, rhythyms of spiritual development and mission, outreach, and connecting with our communities need to be paired.

It also takes on the importance of equipping people for ministry, of ministering to people's real tangible needs, and of really connecting with people where they are at, out in the world, and continuing to bring the church to the world instead of expecting the world to come to the church.

I enjoyed the discussion of place in relationship to missional living. Included in the discussion of place are missional practices that help grow us and help us at the same time bring Christ to others. The small group material was very helpful as well.

Much of what I have read in missional church conversations as well as similar outreach efforts focus on church planters. This book, although supportive of church planting, believes that by God's grace it is possible to transition churches to a missional focus. That was very encouraging to me.

I look forward to reading more books by the Forge Ministries folks, as well as these two specifically.

The Body Bears the Burden: Trauma, Dissociation, and Disease, by Robert C. Scaer

Measure the neurophysiological changes associated with PTSD and whiplash!

Using the clinical model of the whiplash syndrome, this groundbreaking book describes the alterations in brain chemistry and function induced in individuals by what is known as traumatic stress or traumatization--experiencing a life-threatening event while in a state of helplessness. The Body Bears the Burden: Trauma, Dissociation, and Disease presents evidence of the resulting and relatively permanent alteration in neurophysiology, neurochemistry, and neuronal organization.

This book convincingly demonstrates that these changes create lasting effects on the emotional and physical well-being of the victim--changes correlated with many of the most common, yet poorly understood, physical complaints and diseases, including whiplash, migraines, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and other painful, difficult-to-treat conditions. Further, the causes and effects of retraumatization are explored, clarifying the reasons some patients suffer fresh trauma over relatively minor incidents while others handle major traumas more easily.

This groundbreaking volume backs up its new theory of PTSD neurophysiology with cogent theory and persuasive evidence, including:

  • case studies correlating clinical features of trauma and dissociation with compelling physiological rationales for the symptoms
  • solid documentation drawing from the medical and psychiatric literature of PTSD, whiplash, brain injury, epidemiology of trauma, and a variety of disease processes linked to trauma
  • in-depth discussions of medical traumatization of patients, including the results of pediatric procedures and ineffective anesthesia
  • demonstrations that somatization and conversion are not imagined symptoms but result from measurable autonomic physiological alteration of the affected organ
  • a well-documented exploration of the effect of prenatal and neonatal trauma on later emotional development, response to traumatic life events, and disease and mortality
This impressive empirical evidence that body, brain, and mind are a continuum offers a powerful new paradigm to medical and mental health professionals, as well as new hope to sufferers from trauma. With a foreword by Bessel van der Kolk and helpful figures, The Body Bears the Burden: Trauma, Dissociation, and Disease is an essential resource for the in-the-trenches professionals who confront the effects of trauma and resulting somatic consequences. It will be of compelling interest and usefulness to family practice physicians, nurses and nurse practitioners, speech and physical therapists, counselors and psychotherapists, and any medical or mental health professional who treats physical or emotional trauma.

Review
REMARKABLE . . . provides clinically relevant descriptions of the mind/body dysfunctions of both the central and autonomic nervous systems of traumatized patients. Even more than a comprehensive overview, the author presents an integrated neuropsychobiological model of the underlying mechanisms of trauma pathology, which he demonstrates in numerous case histories and applies to various trauma therapies. A CREATIVE, CUTTING-EDGE WORK -- Allan N. Schore, PhD, Assistant Clinical Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of California at Los Angeles School of Medicine

About the Author
Robert C. Scaer, MD, received his BA in Psychology, and his MD degree at the University of Rochester. He is Board Certified in Neurology, and has been in practice for 36 years, twenty of those as Medical Director of Rehabilitation Services at the Mapleton Center in Boulder, CO. His primary areas of interest and expertise have been in the fields of traumatic brain injury and chronic pain, and more recently in the study of traumatic stress and its role in physical and emotional symptoms, and in diseases. He has lectured extensively on these topics, and has published several articles on posttraumatic stress disorder, the whiplash syndrome, and other somatic syndromes of traumatic stress. His books include The Body Bears the Burden: Trauma, Dissociation, and Disease, which presented a new theory of dissociation and its role in many diseases, and The Trauma Spectrum: Hidden Wounds and Human Resiliency, which addressed the broad and relatively unappreciated spectrum of cultural and societal trauma that shapes every aspect of our lives. He is currently retired from clinical medical practice, and continues to pursue a career in writing and lecturing in the field of traumatology.

An exceptional eductional and reference work from a skilled neurolgist and trauma expert
By NH Doc 4385
By way of full disclosure, I am a plastic surgeon with an interest in patients troubled by disturbed body image and an addiction to cosmetic surgery. When I first wrote about that topic in my 2009 surgery textbook, I made the case from a few of my own patient studies that childhood trauma was one of the causes of an obsession for plastic surgery and postoperative dissatisfaction, but it was Dr. Scaer's work and that of others in the trauma field (Peter Levine, Bessel van der Kolk, Pia Mellody, Pat Ogden, Bernice Andrews, and others) that has subsequently helped me piece together a stronger theory and then provide evidence for it, some of which will be published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in October. Dr. Scaer and I have subsequently traded a few emails and he has encouraged my further research

Dr. Scaer is a physician but not a psychiatrist, which gives him the distinct advantage of being able to review the relevant mental health literature from the standpoint of another specialty. A neurologist with an obvious command of neuroanatomy and physiology and all of the abnormalities that developmental and accidental trauma produce, he can write compellingly to make the case, which I believe most physicians do not appreciate, that trauma is not universally perceived. The response to trauma depends upon its meaning to the victim and his or her sense of helplessness in a perceived life-threatening situation. It's like the lion chasing the antelope--the same physiological reactions are occurring--the pupils are dilated, the muscles are pumping, the adrenaline and cortisol are high--but the meaning to the lion is lunch and to the antelope it is survival.

Dr. Scaer has drawn the same link to whiplash and other disease of traumatic stress, and leads the reader through the relevant physiology, trauma and attunement theory, and the way traumatic reactions manifest themselves in a variety of common diseases. As a hand surgeon for many years, I saw the effects of trauma--dissociation, re-experiencing, and avoidance--displayed in many injured, depressed, and angry patients suffering from what is now called "complex regional pain syndrome" and struggled to treat it. All hand surgeons knew that these patients were "difficult", but even now more of them should read Dr. Scaer's work. "Tormented" would be a more accurate term.

The third edition is significantly improved and elaborated over the second, which itself was exceptional. I have read every word of both. There are new chapters on bonding and attunement. The whole text is more "dense", literature references updated and exhaustive. Yet somehow it is still smooth reading for a relative novice to the field. That is the author's skill.

Dr. Scaer seems aware that not all allopathic physicians will subscribe to his ideas, but in my opinion they should. These patients have lifelong afflictions that they did not cause, and until some compassionate physician recognizes it, too many will be discounted as "crazy." They deserve better, and it is pioneers like Dr. Scaer who will educate all of us.

Massage therapists, PTSD survivors, chronic pain sufferers, anyone who has been abused--READ THIS
By ETG
This book is a must read for PTSD survivors and their loved ones. While it can be very technical, you will gain an understanding of what is going on in your body. Mainly, if you have ever suffered trauma, it is literally living in your body and manifesting as pain. Massage therapists have long known that some clients cry when a certain body part is massaged. This book explains cellular memory and demystifies PTSD survivors' longing for solitude and inexplicable behavior. It offers some hope with new therapies that it turns out are not quackery, discusses pharmaceuticals and psychiatry. I see it is selling out. I know many therapists have it on their shelves but we as lay people need to know what's happening to us, too. It's worth the $30 and much better and an easier read than the first one.

Great book, needs more recent references
By Paige
I throughly enjoyed reading this book. It is a great reference on the topic and I particularly liked that it had references at the end of every chapter to back up his claims. It is a theory grounded in neurobiology, animal studies, and physiology. The only complaint I have is that the book is a 2014 updated version, yet I have not found works cited after the year 1999. It doesn't actually seem to be updated with current research in my opinion, and I will be getting another book in addition to this one so I have more recent information. This book was exactly what I was looking for at the time.

Kestrel by Hannah Meredith Really Delivers
By Barbara L. Scott
This novella begins with a truly funny prologue, in which a besotted, young Lord Trent tries to explain to his beloved mistress that it is to her advantage he’s marrying someone else. Chapter One begins seven years later, when a very changed Lord Trent returns from the War on the Peninsula. The tone of the book also changes, as it should, but there are still humorous sections to balance the poignant relationship that develops between Trent and the wife he had abandoned.

I loved this story. The appealing characters had depth and behaved like real people do. The plot kept me turning the pages. And the language usage was a delight. The love scenes were both hot and emotionally satisfying. This novella is the complete package. I look forward to the novels the author’s website says are forthcoming.

Hmmmm...MAJOR SPOILERS!!!!
By Amazon Customer
It was okay. His betrayal IS unforgivable. Not only was he cheating and might have had a child, but he was an a**h*** to her when she thought he wanted to buy them a townhouse in London when it was really for him and his mistress to live in and he sent that child to his wife before abandoning both for 7 years!!!!! He was rude and inconsiderate. I NEVER would have thought that the guy we are introduced to in the present time was the same guy. The book said he had just reached his majority so he could be either 21 or 25 because it varies from the books I have read. At 21, he was way too young to consider himself in love and was a fool for going for the exotic over the homebody. If he was 25, he was an idiot and was old enough to know better by then. If she is woman enough to forgive him, then good for her. Based on his thoughts, he says that he got himself off at camp by remembering the heroine. That means, to me, he was celibate after the whole mistress fiasco. Not to mention, he probably noticed his error in judgement by then and knew better than to ever cheat again. It was a decent read though.

Great read!
By Laura Kinsman
I wish this had been a full-length novel because I wanted to spend more time with the characters. The story was complete at this length, however, with plenty of conflict and well-rounded characters. I liked that this story was a little different from the normal Regency fare. The writing was sometimes uneven, as can be expected from a debut author, but I’ll buy more books from Hannah Meredith.

The Halifax became the second of the new generation of four-engine heavy bombers to enter service with RAF Bomber Command in the Second World War. It flew its first offensive operation in March 1941 and by 1944 it had become the exclusive equipment for Bomber Command's 4 Group and 6 (Canadian) Group, as well as being used in smaller numbers by 100 (Bomber Support) Group. To bad there is no flying example of this bomber
By E Bay Z1
To bad there is no flying example of this bomber, it would be nice to see it against the Lancaster and to here the difference with the Hercules radial vs. the Merlin. A good book on a little known plane for those living in the states. Nice to have two examples, one restored and the other not, to see.

The next sizzling novel of C. L. Parker’s Monkey Business Trio

Hotshot San Diego sports agent Shaw Matthews and his sexy professional adversary Cassidy Whalen have gone head-to-head in the boardroom—and the bedroom. Now Shaw has scored a big promotion—but only because Cassidy turned it down and ran off. There are many things he wants when it comes to Cassidy—just not her pity. So Shaw rushes to a small town in Maine to retrieve his dignity—and maybe the woman he’s hungry to claim once more.

Cassidy has pushed herself to the max to realize her career dreams—until a family crisis brings her home. But Shaw isn’t letting Cassidy go that easily. Neither is gorgeous heartthrob Casey Michaels, the childhood sweetheart she left behind—and who now wants to win her back. As the rivalry between the two alpha males intensifies, and Shaw’s seductive moves reach a whole new level of heat, Cassidy has to make a choice. And this time, it’s for the highest stakes of all.

Getting Rough is intended for mature audiences.

Praise for Getting Rough

“The second Monkey Business contemporary (after Playing Dirty) plunges right into the multifaceted liaison between Shaw Matthews and Cassidy Whalen, secret lovers and openly competitive business associates, as heartfelt emotions, misconceived assumptions, and natural disasters make for rough adventures. . . . Parker’s fast pace, rapier wit, and sharp dialogue perfectly merge with the simmering sexual tension in this lust-to-love tale that fans will devour.”—Publishers Weekly

“Forces of nature conspire to represent the deep emotional involvement between the main characters in this hot-blooded novel by Parker. Mother Nature is also the perfect foil to the lives of the varied inhabitants of this sexy tale. The title is apt as the lovemaking grows from sweet to wild for each willing participant.”—RT Book Reviews

Praise for C. L. Parker’s Playing Dirty

“Fun, action-packed . . . Readers will be eager to read the sequel, hoping for more rough and dirty sexual acrobatics, friendship, backstabbing, and empathy.”—Publishers Weekly

“This snappy, sexy novel moves at breakneck speed, with abundant snark and sports euphemisms. . . . Parker’s penchant for dry humor and vivid, voracious sex scenes breathes life into a well-trodden premise.”—Library Journal

“Parker writes intense storylines that anyone can relate to. Her characters are complex, with long and sometimes turbulent pasts that they have overcome, that still continues to affect their present. . . . I cannot wait to see where she takes this new series.”—Fresh Fiction

About the Author
C. L. Parker is a romance author who writes stories that sizzle. She’s a small-town girl with big-city dreams and enough tenacity to see them come to fruition. Having been the outgoing sort all her life—which translates to “she just wouldn’t shut the hell up”—it’s no wonder Parker eventually turned to writing as a way to let her voice, and those of the people living inside her head, be heard. She loves hard, laughs until it hurts, and lives like there’s no tomorrow. In her world, everything truly does happen for a reason.

Chapter 1

Shaw

“Simi, where the fuck am I?” I growled into my cellphone.

“I don’t know, asshole,” would’ve been an acceptable comeback, given my level of rudeness, but my ever-professional virtual assistant kept her cool. “You’re traveling south on Upper Falls Road.”

You’re, a contraction from a voice-recognition program. Wasn’t technology nifty? Nifty, but not a whole lot of help. Left to figure it out on my own, I had to draw only slightly conceivable conclusions. The best I could tell, the flight I’d taken to Bangor, Maine, had somehow veered off course and into the Bermuda Triangle, which I was now convinced was a wormhole to an alternate universe where interstates hadn’t yet been invented. That or all of this had been an elaborate scheme that my arch nemesis/part-time lover, Cassidy Whalen, had come up with in order to lure me away to a place where she could continue her torture routine and then eat my liver before dumping my body where no one could find it.

Truthfully, I’d be okay with the slightly creepy murder because being forced to endure that look of pity on her face every day for the foreseeable future was a fate worse than death.

I dropped my phone in the nook next to the gearshift, none too gently, thanks to my mounting frustration. I was exhausted, running on fumes after a ten-and-a-half-hour flight and nearing a two-hour drive. My stomach was gnawing at me from the inside, which I suspected was simply for the sole purpose of going in search of food on its own, since I’d placated it only with airplane peanuts.

Simi dinged, either to warn me to take it easier on her delicate structure or to issue a reminder to bust a right onto yet another state route on my journey through God’s country. Thirty-six more miles on winding roads to the island that laid claim to a small fishing village called Stonington. Cassidy’s stomping ground. What in the world was I thinking when I’d decided to hop that flight? Oh, right . . . I’d wanted to give her a piece of my mind. But right now, I wanted a piece of chicken to put in my belly.

Making a left into the parking lot of a gas station, I parked the compact rental car I’d been forced into when no other option had been available and got out. The cartoon chicken on the sign in the window shouldn’t have made me salivate, but it did. Maybe I was on the verge of delirium because gas station chicken wasn’t a smart decision. I’d pay for it later.

The kid behind the counter was patient as I decided between chicken chicken, chicken tenders, or chicken nuggets. As he gathered my tenders and potato wedges, I thought I’d double-check that Simi knew what she was talking about, though I might have used a hushed voice to make sure she couldn’t hear me doing so. The last thing I needed was for her to get an attitude about me not trusting her. Women could be so testy. Even virtual women.

“Hey . . . Dale,” I started, reading his nametag. “Is it normal for there to be a lot of back roads around here instead of interstates?”

Chicken Dale half-laughed. I guess he got that question a lot. “Yep. Where are you going?”

“Uh, Stonington,” I said, taking my boxed meal.

He drew his head back like what I’d said was unusual. “Stonington?”

“Yeah. Why, am I going in the wrong direction? I knew it,” I said, adding a curse under my breath.

“No, you’re going in the right direction. It’s just that no one goes to Stonington unless they’re a local.”

“Is that a bad thing?”

He laughed again. “Depends on who you ask.”

“Great,” I said with a sarcastic smile. “Thanks, man.” I took my box, noticing the grease stains already soaking through. “I’m not going to die from eating this, am I?”

His shrug and expression said it could go either way. I’d make it, or I wouldn’t. Oh, well. We all had to go sometime.

After paying for my heart attack in a box and bottled water, I got back on the road. At least what was supposed to pass for a road, anyway. The winding, unpainted pavement was bad enough, but the bumps along the way reminded me of being a kid in a shopping cart passing over a grooved sidewalk, the vibration from each notch making my ahhhh sound like a symphony of vocal acrobats. I might have even tried it out to prove a point, since there was no one else around to see me making an ass of myself. Until my phone rang, that is.

“Hello?” I cleared my throat, trying not to sound so much like a bullfrog was lodged in it. “Ben?”

“Yo, boss man!” came his far too exuberant response. “How’s Maine?”

“So far, so shitty. What’d you find for me?”

“Well, there are only two places to choose from and one is booked, if you can believe that, but I did score you a nice room at the Whalen House.”

For some reason a massive migraine decided to strike like a lightning bolt from out of nowhere. “Wait. Did you just say Whalen?”

“Yep. And it’s exactly what you think.” I could hear the smile in his voice. “Lair of the ice queen, herself. Cassidy’s parents own the joint. Per the four-and-a-half-star review, it’s a quaint little bed-and-breakfast with a family atmosphere and all the amenities of home. You should fit right in.”

I would’ve growled at him if I’d had the energy. “You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?”

“A little bit.” At least he was honest with me. Unlike Cassidy.

“There’s no other choice?”

“Nope.”

“I’m firing you when I get back.”

“Sure thing, boss. In the meantime, I’m pushing Denver’s contract through to make everything real nice and legal.”

Denver “Rocket Man” Rockford was where all of this had started. Cassidy Whalen and I had been in competition to represent the most coveted quarterback in the league and earn a slice of his pie, along with a partnership at Striker Sports Entertainment. I’d won. On a technicality. Denver had offered the contract to Cassidy first, but she’d turned it down and insisted he give it to me. All after she’d found out I wasn’t the rich playboy I’d let everyone believe I was. If she hadn’t been so goddamn nosy, so judgmental, so determined to pick me apart like I was a toad spread-eagle on a metal tray, I wouldn’t be in a stupid tin can on a fucked-up road heading to a place no one else has ever even heard of.

I shoved my hand inside the greasy box, regretting it instantly when I found the scalding wedges, which must have been pulled from the vat of oil right as I’d walked into the gas station. “Son of a bitch!”

“Okay . . . I can hold it, if you want me to. But I’ve gotta ask. Are you actually changing your mind about scoring the biggest deal of your life?” I’d almost forgotten Ben was on the phone. Maybe I hadn’t been far off the mark with the delirium thing.

“Is that even a real question? Of course not. I just burned myself,” I said, sucking on the wounded finger.

“Funny, I didn’t feel a thing. Ba-dum-bum-ching!” He was a hairsbreadth away from being replaced by Simi.

“Grow up, Ben,” I said, taking charge and acting like a real boss. “Book the room, get the contract on Wade’s desk, and get me on a flight out of here first thing tomorrow morning.”

“You got it. But, uh,” he hedged.

“Spit it out.” I was quickly losing what little patience I had left.

“Just a heads-up, there’s a nasty bit of weather forecasted for Maine over the next few days. Best be prepared for a longer stay, mate.”

“Then you better make sure you get me out of here before it does because I have zero intention of sticking around any longer than I have to, so call me with the details once you’ve got them.” With that, I hung up and tried to get my greasy grub on again.

Having zero intention of sticking around any longer than I had to was exactly right, but it wasn’t like I had a reason to be here in the first place. Christ, what the fuck was I doing in friggin’ Maine? See, Cassidy Whalen had this way about her that got into my head and made me act like a stark raving mad lunatic. Because of that woman, I’d done things I’d never do. Like seduce a co-worker in order to win a contract. Or at least, I’d tried to seduce her. It had backfired. Sort of. But at least I’d gotten my rocks off a time or two in the process, so consolation prize and all. Thing was, I didn’t do second place well, and my consolation prize had skipped town and taken her delectable little pussy with her. I wasn’t okay with that.

Shit. Why wasn’t I okay with that? Over the years, I’d built up a wall to keep the crazy out, and bit by bit, she’d been chiseling away at it and making me feel things. I shivered, the horror of that thought prancing down my spine like a thousand tiny Cassidys doing their victory dances.

Don’t get me wrong, the whole feeling things didn’t mean I’d fallen in love with her or anything. No, the things she made me feel were the same emotions I’d left behind the night I’d watched a man get his head blown off right in front of my eyes. I’d been just a kid, but living in Detroit is a game of survival I’d been forced to learn early on. Feelings equaled weakness. And it wasn’t like I had parents to shelter me from all that bullshit either. My folks couldn’t give a shit whether I lived or died. Hell, they probably would have preferred I’d died because at least then maybe they could collect some sort of check on me.

With a frustrated growl, I shook the fucked-up situation with my parents out of my head because thoughts like those wouldn’t further my goals in life. They were behind me. That life was behind me. I’d been moving forward since the day I became a man at the ripe old age of nine. Having no mother to coddle you after you’d just witnessed a brutal, bloody murder sort of put things in perspective. No one was going to take care of that little boy but the man he was meant to be. And the only way anyone could ever hurt me was if I gave them the ammunition to do so.

I’d worked hard to make my way in life. And I’d taken every opportunity I could to further my cause, but being handed a contract that had originally been offered to a fucking woman smarted. It was emasculating. Though I had no intention of backing down from the mother of all contracts, regardless of how I’d gotten it, the first thing I needed to do was reclaim my manhood. And at the moment, Cassidy Whalen was holding my balls in her purse. Once I got them back, I could put her and all the touchy-feely stuff behind me once and for all.

Deer Isle–Sedgwick Bridge loomed before me like a four-hundred-foot iron sentry that would either grant access to my destination or turn into a rolling and twisting amusement park ride to dump me into the waters of Eggemoggin Reach below. Obviously, the amusement would not be mine. But as luck would have it, I crossed without issue. The steel suspension cables even stayed in place, and I was fairly certain the ominous laughter I’d thought I’d heard had been only my imagination having playtime with the natural creeks and groans of metal on metal. Christ, I needed some sleep before the boulders scattered about the landscape turned into rock people frolicking through blueberry fields.

Rock people did not exist. Just like the bumps in the road were not made by genetically altered super mole spies with ninja reflexes sent to keep track of me, and the sandbar supporting the causeway to Deer Isle would not turn into quicksand to suck me down to Middle Earth. But my phone was ringing.

Cannot Get Enough!!!
By Ashley S.
"It's the eye of the storm," he whispered. "But it isn't over yet. In fact, things are about to get rough again. Are you ready?"

I certainly thought I was ready, but I had no idea what I was actually getting myself into emotionally. Getting Rough, as mentioned by C.L. Parker in her Author's Notes, was a very personal journey of breaking down walls, coming to accept new things in life, and, ultimately, taking exactly what you want out of that life. I cannot even begin to describe how evident she made that for her readers throughout the whole story and, thinking back on it, now everything makes a whole lot more sense. The heart that she poured into this book is what makes it a 6+++ star favorite for me. Not only did she have me laughing hysterically at Shaw and his antics and thoughts, but also hoping for so much more from two characters who could not have been more perfect for one another. It is rough at some points (as the title suggests) with two such dominant characters vying for what they think will fulfill their lives while allowing their stubborn personalities to crush all thoughts of happiness at the same time; Shaw's broken past that has led him to a guarded present and Cassidy's fairytale upbringing that is keeping her from finding her true Happily Ever After.

As we move through the book, we see old walls crumbling and new ones being forged with the love of family (and unofficial family), acceptance of a past that is no more, and the hope of a future that can heal two lost souls. The chemistry and banter between the H and h, although expected by how amazing it was in the first book. was even better this time around. Being in a different setting with more personal realizations coming to the forefront made it possible for reality to break through and knock both Shaw and Cassidy on their asses. It was fabulous to experience since I'm sure most readers, myself included, wanted them to recognize exactly what we have been seeing in two books now. I have to say that I loved everything about this book; from the lightheartedness to the more serious and then to the most serious, the childhood fantasies that became reality, and the lust that turned into love. This book had it all for me and I would be remiss if I didn't put my highest recommendation behind it. Well done, once again, Ms. Parker. I will be one of the first to pick up Coming Clean upon release!

Do we all remember how the first book ended?
I had to do a little re-read to remember >> #BooksAlzheimers!!!
Cassidy and Shaw were both fighting with all they had to get the partner position in their sports agency.
And at the end of book #1 Cassidy would've signed this most important client, which would've gotten her the job - BUT - she declined and let Shaw have it all! He accepted, but he can't be bested by a girl just like that!!!
Why did she do that? Why did she let him win?
Because he told her about his sad childhood? Because they had sex? Why?
Only one way to find out - ask her!
But she's gone!
Gone home to Maine, to take care of her parents' Bed & Breakfast, because her mom broke her leg.
And what does Shaw do? Call her? Nope - he follows her to Stonington, Maine. This adorable little fisher island town.

But Shaw is not the only one after Cass.
There's also her bestest and oldest friend Casey.
The hottest guy in town. And he's still single and still interested!
Casey was always hoping for a happy ever after with the girl he grew up with.
And Shaw? Never did any happy ever after thought ever cross his mind. But Cassidy?
She changed him.

Lots of sexiness happens in Maine....
But of course our darlings will still have some fighting to do, to get to their Happy Ever After!!!

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO SHAW & CASSIDY??
WILL THERE BE A HAPPY END????
What about Casey? What about this new character Mia?
Will there be a horrible Cliffhanger??
I'm not telling you, of course ☺
Ok, there WILL be a tiny little Cliffy ...

Great 2nd book!
I really enjoyed it!
It was something completely different from the first one. We're not in San Diego anymore - no boardroom deals - no suits - no big money.
We're in this cute little town where everybody know everybody else's business.
And poor Shaw doesn't fit in at all. He would love to fit in though.
All that home-cooking and cookie-baking and those nice old ladies. He wishes that one of them would adopt him. He had a horrible childhood back in Detroit.
But he's not in town to get adopted. He wants to talk to Cassidy - and maybe take her to bed a few times - and then go back home.
But there's this Casey guy sniffing around his Cassidy!!!
It was so adorable to read about poor Shaw fighting for something he didn't even know he wanted.
We have LOTS of verrrry sexy scenes!!!
And lots of very moving scenes!!!
Poor Shaw, poor Casey --- lots of awwww moments!

I really enjoyed this book - and I loved the location and Cassidy's & Casey's family. All so adorable and loving.

Were there some things I didn't like?
Hmm....maybe the way Shaw talks too much to us or rather to himself. He digresses here and there and everywhere - it's a tiny bit too much. But he's still an amazingly cool guy!!!
Also - this whole second book was NOTHING like the first one.
I kinda had this whole cheesy Nora Roberts Romance Feeling.
This cozy little island with lots of sexi romance happening. BUT I loved that - it was just so far away from book #1 and from how our darlings acted in book #1 ☺

►► GETTING ROUGH was the perfect second book in this series!
Very funny & adorable & moving & erotic!! Go and get yourself some Shaw & Casey! ♥
And please Ms. Parker - GIVE. ME. COMING. CLEAN. asap!!!☺☺☺

just as good as the first

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

When Shaw finds out that Cassidy has left San Diego for her Maine hometown, his first thought was to go after her and let her know that he didn't like her "letting" him win, so that's what he did. He couldn't let get away with feeling sorry for him and giving him the partnership. He wanted to earn it, like he did everything else in his life.

Cassidy didn't let Shaw win. She turned the contract down because her family was more important than being made partner at the sports agency where they worked. Her Dad had called and told her that her mother was in the hospital and they would need help keeping the B&B that her mother owned going while she recouperated.

Shaw was surprised to learn that Cassidy hadn't turned down the offer to represent Denver due to her feelings for him, but rather because of her feelings and obligation to her family. Never having had a typical, or even an atypical family, he doesn't know how to process it. Determined to learn more about this side of Cassidy, he decides to stay for a few more days.

Cassidy is glad that she can be of help to her parents, but she's already tired of the inevitable questions about how long she's staying and when she's coming home for good. Grateful for the Casey's friendship, she relies on him to the buffer she needs, even though their romance ended long ago.

During the time Shaw and Cassidy spends in Maine, each come to some hard and harsh realizations about themselves and each other. When it comes down to it, its time to shut up or grow up.
