About the Author

Pamela Regan is Professor of Psychology at California State University, Los Angeles. She received her Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Minnesota and her undergraduate degree in English from Williams College. Her research interests are in the areas of close relationships and human sexuality, with an emphasis on passionate love, sexual desire, and mate preference. She has published more than 100 journal articles, book chapters, and reviews (and has given over 75 professional presentations) on the dynamics of sex, love, and human mating, and she is the author of Close Relationships (Routledge, 2011), the co-author (with Ellen Berscheid) of The Psychology of Interpersonal Relationships (Pearson, 2005) and Lust: What We Know About Human Sexual Desire (Sage, 1999), and the co-author (with Bruce King) of Human Sexuality Today (Pearson, 2014). In 2007, she was honored with the Outstanding Professor Award by her university for excellence in instruction and professional achievement.

About the Author
Elizabeth Mattis-Namgyel is the wife of Tibetan Buddhist master Dzigar Kongtr�l and the editor of two of his books (It’s Up to You and Light Comes Through). She has studied and practiced in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition for twenty-five years under his guidance and completed years of solitary retreat. As a Buddhist teacher, she leads weekend retreats throughout the United States and Europe.

The open question which Elizabeth Mattis-Namgyel exhorts us to appreciate and tolerate extends to the book and its author as well. Completely open and free of the reifications which compromise so many Dharma books, she resists labels, easy answers and pain-killers of any sort, offering us both the authority earned from years of practice and the Dharma friendship of one who never forgets that, like all practitioners, she remains a beginner on the path.

Genuine Buddhism in an accessible voice

I truly enjoyed reading The Power of An Open Question by Elizabeth Mattis Namgyel. She shares her experience and understanding in terms and images that are thought provoking and yet accessible to understand. Reading the book felt like having a chat with the author. She shares her intimate experience of her own exploration into the Tibetan Buddhist teachings and into her own relationship to them. Thank you Elizabeth Mattis Namgyel for writing The Power of an Open Question with such heartfelt intelligence!

excellent book

I found "The Power of an Open Question" to be an incredible articulation of what it means to follow the Buddhist path. Not only is it well articulated, the book is also an encouragement to go further and look deeper.

As someone who has been attempting to follow the Buddhist path for 15 years, I found in this book a very clear re-introduction to the basics of view and practice. I think Buddhists from any tradition will find this book a wonderful support, as it is the story of Siddhartha and his quest for truth which serves as the backbone of her exploration.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough! I found the presentation of the concepts and material to be very engaging, and felt my perceptions and engagement with the world being further awakened through her encouragement. The author has done an amazing job of pointing toward something profound without objectifying it in any way.

About the Author
Alex Fornito completed a PhD in the Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of Melbourne, Australia, followed by Post-Doctoral training at the University of Cambridge, UK. He is an associate professor, Australian Research Council Future Fellow, and Deputy Director of the Brain and Mental Health Laboratory in the Monash Institute of Cognitive and Clinical Neurosciences, Australia. Alex’s research uses cognitive neuroscience, network science, and graph theory to understand brain network organization in health and disease. He has published over 100 scientific articles, much of which are focused on the development and application of new methods to understand how brain networks dynamically adapt to changing task demands, how they are disrupted by disease, and how they are shaped by genetic influences.

Andrew Zalesky completed his PhD in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He works with neuroscientists, utilizing his engineering expertise in networks to understand human brain organization in health and disease. He has developed widely used methods for modeling and performing statistical inference on brain imaging data. His methods are utilized to investigate brain connectivity abnormalities in disease. He identified some of the first evidence of connectome pathology in schizophrenia. Andrew currently holds a fellowship from the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia. He is based at the University of Melbourne and holds a joint appointment between the Melbourne Neuropsychiatry Centre and the Melbourne School of Engineering. He leads the Systems Neuropsychiatry Group.

Ed Bullmore trained in medicine at the University of Oxford and St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, and then in psychiatry at the Bethlem Royal and Maudsley Hospital, London. In 1993, he was a Wellcome Trust (Advanced) Research Fellow at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London, where he completed a PhD in the statistical analysis of MRI data, before moving to Cambridge as Professor of Psychiatry in 1999. Currently, he is co-Chair of Cambridge Neuroscience, Scientific Director of the Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre, and Head of the Department of Psychiatry in the University of Cambridge. He is also an honorary Consultant Psychiatrist, and Director of R&D in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Foundation NHS Trust. Since 2005, he has worked half-time for GlaxoSmithKline, currently focusing on immuno-psychiatry. He has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, the Royal College of Psychiatrists, and the Academy of Medical Sciences. He has published about 500 scientific papers, and his work has been highly cited. He has played an internationally-leading role in understanding brain connectivity and networks by graph theoretical analysis of neuroimaging and other neuroscientific datasets.

Towards network neurology

This is an outstanding book, because the authors achieve a perfect balance between qualitative, intuitive neurophysiological interpretations and mathematical rigour of graph theory applied to structural and functional brain networks. The concepts are very clearly explained and comprehensively illustrated by well chosen examplary cases, which are drawn from a large spectrum ranging from animal to the human nervous system.
From my neurologist's/epileptologist's point of view this is one of the very few books (such as Olaf Sporn's Networks of the Brain (MIT Press) or Gyorgy Buzsaki's Rhythms of the Brain) that are really helpful to clinicians interested in trans-disciplinary research and might thus hopefully help to pave the way to a future "network neurology/epileptology".

The best

I've bought Goulding's "Classical music, the 50 greatest composers and their 1,000 greatest works" and Libbey's "The NPR guide to building a classical CD collection". I must say they're two great books, but if I had to choose THE classical book for starters I would highly recommend the Greenberg's "How to listen to great music".

It takes you by the hand accross the different eras, analyzing every period, explaining every detail, and decomposing every piece even using musical notation.

It's just a pleasure to read this book, it even turns you into a happy mood.

Obviously, you need to listen to the music he's explaining, and you may either look it up on youtube, or buy/download a CD.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Treat yourself to this book! I've listened to some of Professor Greenberg's audio courses from The Teaching Company and found them to be absolutely wonderful. I worried about whether his material could be presented as well in written format. It can! The book is packed with fascinating information, is beautifully organized and presented with humor. It's extremely "accessible" and a great read. I'll be referencing it often.

Excellent introduction for the novice

Before presenting my review I should warn the reader that I have no training in music. I do not read music nor do I play any instrument. I do however love to listen to music of all genres.

I was looking for a good, not too shallow and not too academic, introduction to western classical music. I wanted to learn to appreciate what I was listening to beyond just the tune and rhythym. Greenberg's course fit the bill quite nicely. Starting with early music Greenberg takes one on a very rewarding journey all the way to the modern composers. The third edition consists of 48 lectures at 45 minutes each for a total of 36 hours. Now some may consider this a tad long but for my purposes it was just great. In fact it took me a good 8 months to finish the course!

Professer Greenberg presents the material with zest and enthusiasm that makes the material easily understandable. An important concept in this course is the idea of 'music as a mirror'. In other words knowing the history, culture, and social norms of the time is ABSOLUTELY essential to understanding and appreciating the works.

The early lectures deal with music basics such as tone, form etc. which was great because for a non-musician like myself it lays the groundwork for later lectures. Some samples of ancient Greek music were quite beautiful.

I found that listening to about two lectures a week was just right to mull the contents over and maybe check out a point or two in any music dictionary. In some cases listening to a piece to corroborate a salient in the lectures helped a great deal.

I am so glad I purchased this set. I thought long and hard before coughing up the bread because the set was not cheap. But I am glad I did. The course gave me a new appreciation of the magnificient gift of classical music. It is too bad that 'The Teaching Company', producers of this set, do not have an arrangement with Amazon to market this to a wider audience.

A great introduction and sure to become a treasure in your home.

The guide looks great, as do the lithographs

The guide looks great, as do the lithographs. The guide feels excellent and high quality, and I do not think it would damage easily.

However, if you actually want to use the guide for the game, you are out of luck. I wanted to look up a tricky hidden object and the guide did not mention it at all, and many of the tips it gives are useless. What collectible items it does mention are given the most vague and useless explanations.

Nice trophy but misleading collectables.

I purchased the hard cover guide, and like others have said the extras and quality of artwork is great. However there are some mistakes in regards to the number of collectables available which I've noticed right away on the 2nd mission. For instance there are more blueprints and paintings to collect in the game missions, than there are listed in the guide book.

If your a completionist like me, you want the essentials that are worth the most coin and the guide doesn't quite account for all of them. However, my copy came with a free code to an online version I have yet to look at, so you may wish to have a try at that.

Dishonored 2 is great game regardless and the guide is an excellent trophy.

Excellent book to read in one sitting!

Such a fun, cute, lighthearted book, the perfect book to get you to get lost in the story of two teens falling in love for the first time.

Abby and Nathan are two sixteen year old pop stars, Nathan is part of a famous band and Abby is just getting started as their opening act in their tour. Needless to say from the moment they meet, there are sparks flying around all over the place, the connection is instantaneous and the both just can't stop it from unfolding, even if they both have other responsibilities first.

This is the first book I've read of this series, but they all sound amazing so I might give them a read as well.

I've been a big fan of the Backstage Pass series since the very first book, and have thoroughly enjoyed each installment. I've been eagerly anticipating Nathan's story, because he's the one I felt like I knew the least about. He's more quiet, the youngest, and hasn't really taken center stage, so to speak, in the overall plot so far. This book didn't disappointment.

I loved Nathan immediately. He's so sweet and cute. I hated the situation he now finds himself in. All the other guys in the band have girlfriends, so the pressure is on for him to be the "dateable" one, the one people still have a chance with. Thus, he has to go on dates with celebrity girls he isn't even interested in. I know this happens in real life. You know all those celebrity marriages that occur and last a year or less? They were probably PR setups. I felt really bad for Nathan because of this situation, for him to have to hold the entire bag when what he really wants is a more simple girl, down to earth. He finds that in Abby.

Abby was so sweet, talented, and what I thought was a perfect match for Nathan. They meet very early in the story,and they had what I would describe as a "meet cute". I won't spoil it for anyone, but I will say that I was on board with their romance from the first few pages. She's got a YouTube following and is auditioning to be the opening act for Seconds to Juliet. Only problem is, once she's there, she's pretty much forbidden ground for Nathan in all respects.

I loved the conflict in this story, the way PR people try to dictate a celebrity's every move. And I loved the romance. I can't go into more detail without ruining something for those who haven't read it. But the author did a fabulous job giving this book depth inside a cute story, and for ending out this great series with a wonderful installment. Loved it.

Abby and the Cute One by Erin Butler is the final installment in the Backstage Pass series. Each book is a standalone with interconnected characters. This book was cute and had some enjoyable moments, but I did have a few things that kept this one from being a five star read for me.

With all the guys from Seconds to Juliet pairing off, Nathan Strong is the last single guy in the group. Their manager is working hard to get Nathan to take on the role of single heartthrob. Though LJ wants Nathan to fake a relationship and breakup for publicity, Nathan is actually interested in the new opening act, Abby Curtis. But they both know that if anyone finds out about them it will be bad for both, so Abby and Nathan are forced to sneak around to avoid being discovered. But the more they sneak around and their connection grows, the more they run the risk of losing everything.

I liked Abby and Nathan. They were really cute, and I thought they were great together. Nathan is the youngest member of the band, and they all sort of treated him as the younger brother. It was really adorable at times, and I like how they all were as a group. Abby was really sweet and cute as well, and it was really easy to like her. There really is no other way to describe these two but cute, but I really did enjoy them together. They were a bit shy and awkward at times and I found myself swooning at their young love.

I will say that this book felt a bit rushed though and I was so over the crap with LJ (Seconds to Juliet's manager). After seeing everything that he has done over the course of this series, it just started to feel over the top and a bit too much like a soap opera for me. The other thing about this book is that it was a bit too predictable as well. I felt like it was definitely geared towards a younger audience, and it seemed to take on similar characteristics to other YA novels I have read. While there were things I liked, I just wanted this one to do some things differently rather than falling into familiar patterns and easy to guess outcomes. It was still cute, as is the entire series, but it was just okay as far as the story went. If you like YA stories and are a fan of boy bands and music, this is definitely a series to check out. I think that a lot of YA readers will really enjoy this book and the series.
