She herself rejected an emphasis on the pioneering aspects of her career, saying that “it’s almost like it’s an honor rather than a disgrace” and that she should “be the fiftieth and the thousandth by this point”—a remark that suggests the complexity and singularity of vision to be found in her plays. Childress worked as an actress before turning to playwriting in 1949, and she was a political activist all of her life.�

Spanning the 1940s to the 1960s, the plays collected here are the ones Childress herself believed were her best, and offer a realistic portrait of the racial inequalities and social injustices that characterized these decades. Her plays often feature strong-willed female protagonists whose problems bring into harsh relief the restrictions faced by African American women. This is the first volume devoted exclusively to the work of a major playwright whose impact on the American theater was profound and lasting.

About the Author
Alice Childress (1916—1994) was a playwright, novelist, and actress. Among her best-known plays are Trouble in Mind (1955), Wedding Band (1966), and Wine in the Wilderness (1969). She was the first African American woman to have a play professionally produced in New York City and the first woman to win an Obie Award for Best Play. She is also the author of A Hero Ain’t Nothin’ But a Sandwich, a young-adult novel that was also made into a film.�

Kathy A. Perkins is a Professor of Theatre at the University of Illinois. She is the editor of Black Female Playwrights: An Anthology of Plays before 1950, Black South African Women: An Anthology of Plays, and African Women Playwrights. She is co-editor of Contemporary Plays by Women of Color and Strange Fruit: Plays on Lynching by American Women. She has been an award-winning lighting designer for productions throughout the United States, Europe, and South Africa.

I am very humbled and happy as to this receiving of this anthology. Ms. Alice Childress' works -- or her life, I should say -- mirrors so many aspects of, personally, my life, my visions as well as my expectations as an artist, as a human being. I stand along with marvelous editor Kathy A. Perkins in pertinence to emotional disturbance that Ms. Childress' works, or she herself, did not receive the recognition, the respect, which are deserved. In fact, Ms. Childress' struggles to maintain her personal humanity, artistic integrity let alone her privacy is common to most writers, and of color, such as, aside from myself: Lorraine Hansberry and James Baldwin, whom are my deeply personal favorites and, dare I say, my artistic and spiritual comrades. In the meantime, having Ms. Childress' works in my home to study, to reflect, to enjoy is a joy for me. She stands alongside -- in my heart, at least, Hansberry, Baldwin, Angelou, Morrison, Walker, and so many others who, quoting from Childress, used "pain" to "push the pen" ... and over again.

Brad brings a meangingful perspective to the role of a CFO. It requires more than financial prowess and finesse. He shows the need to understand staff motivation and methods of direction; the importance of correctly assessing the vagaries of banking relationships, and the ways to feel out bussiness resources before they seize control of a perfectly viable company. Much can be learned about a person or a business over a nice dinner and bottle of nice vintage wine. Once involved, the quality CFO can accurately portray the benefit of persuing any deal to a multi-tasking CEO who may lack the time to deeply engage.

Brad really nailed it! If you are contemplating a career in business, just starting out, or an experienced business leader you will enjoy reading the Business Zoo. He offers great insight into the very complex business community. Brad shares his real-world experiences from establishing strong business ethics foundation to dealing with outside Consultants, Bankers, and Lawyers. His recommendations are relevant today and offer a helpful checklist of what to do and how to do it. Great read! Congratulations Brad.

If you want real management experience read this book. You may not encounter all of these situations (hopefully) but you will find yourself in some. This book is not business theory. It is actual experience from a manager who lived through them. Great read.

Great Resource!!!

Really well done textbook. The fine details of the complex and beautiful Ukrainian language are well presented in this text. I admit to being overwhelmed by this textbook as it requires a pretty fine understanding of English grammar in addition to Ukrainian. However, it is helping me to understand English even better now and it is my native tongue. This book will be very useful when I reach a higher level in my understanding of Ukrainian. I am still a beginner at this point, but I still find this textbook very useful nonetheless. I highly recommend this text and "Colloquial Ukrainian" also by these authors. "Colloquial Ukrainian" is a course with audio of native speakers for absolute beginners. I admit that I use a different course by Roma Franko much more and have also found that one very useful. But there are many more details and subtleties explained in both of the books written by Ian Press and Stefan Pugh. Thanks to both of those gentlemen and their Ukrainian teachers for their fine work!!!

Good descriptive grammar

I was quite pleased to get this. The Routledge Grammars tend to be very good and this one was no excerption.
After a brief but good introduction on the history of the language and its relation to other Slavic languages.
There was about 25 pages describing the Ukrainian phonological system, and then the remainder treated each part of speech in detail. I am a linguist-morphologist by profession, and what was in this book was exactly what I needed for work which was doing.. The authors are to be congratulated. It's good book.

A very important, concise reference work for the advanced learner

Splendid reference book for the serious learner to hone their skills with. It's not for the beginner, as the book states, it isn't primarily meant to teach Ukrainian, but a resource to accompany the study of this language to a further degree.

It was easy to read through

Couldn't put it down. As someone who enjoys but doesn't hold much contemporary art up to the importance or value as classical/ traditional art, I found myself loving the perspective as well as the insights and candid interviews. It was easy to read through, and provided a beautiful and sometimes harsh view of aspects of the contemporary art scene. Great read, which I'll be returning to again and again.

A great insider read.

Although I liked Sarah Thornton's first book, Seven Days in the World better, this was still a very interesting read. The book is ultimately Sarah's opinions on the intentions and motives of various famous contemporary artists. A bit gossipy, a bit insiders scoop, it ultimately does a good job of showing a range of personalities who make up the varied, complicated and fraught stables of art world stars. And it's pretty clear she doesn't think much of Jeff Koons!

Light and fun, don't worry no theory

As an artist some of the author's explanations/clarifications were unnecessary for me. But if you don't know that much about the art world it's a great read. It was especially nice to read about the wildly different studio practices of various artists, from the factories of Koons and Wei, to the much smaller studios of Cindy Sherman and Gabriel Orozco.

An acceptably wider interpretation of the term direct methods leads to other important applica� tions involving, inter alia, the use of heavy atoms, resolution-limited phase data for large molecules, rotation functions, and Fourier series. These topics are discussed in the later chapters of this book. Although some earlier theoretical investigations were made by Harker and Kaspar, direct methods may be considered to have begun around the year 1950. Important landmarks in the development of the subject include the book by Hauptmann and Karle, The Centrosymmetric Crystal (1953), the definitive paper by Karle and Karle in Acta Crystallographica (1966), and the recent (1978) sophisticated program package MULTAN 78 produced mainly by Germain, Main, and Woolfson. Woolfson's book, Direct Methods in Crystallography, was published in 1961, but because of the rapid progress in direct methods, much of it soon became outmoded. It is interesting to note that direct methods nearly came into being many years earlier. Certainly the E2 relationship was used implicitly by Lonsdale in 1928 in determining the crystal structure of hexamethylbenzene.
