This is a wonderful little booklet, that I have recommended to my relatives, who also have or have had cancer. I am brewing and using the tea faithfully according to its instructions, and have almost no side effects from chemotherapy.

About the Author

Mark Russinovich is a Technical Fellow in the Windows Azure group at Microsoft. He is coauthor of Windows Sysinternals Administrator’s Reference, co-creator of the Sysinternals tools available from Microsoft TechNet, and coauthor of the Windows Internals book series. David A. Solomon is coauthor of the Windows Internals book series and has taught his Windows internals class to thousands of developers and IT professionals worldwide, including Microsoft staff. He is a regular speaker at Microsoft conferences, including TechNet and PDC. Alex Ionescu is a chief software architect and consultant expert in low-level system software, kernel development, security training, and reverse engineering. He teaches Windows internals course with David Solomon, and is active in the security research community.

Internal Insights...

The Windows Internals books have always been the most in-depth look into how the Windows Operating System works and provide valuable information for anyone developing and debugging Windows applications. I have used these books as a reference since the third edition and they have continuously gotten more comprehensive in size. The sixth edition is now split into two parts, the second part being reviewed here.

The last edition covered both Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista while this edition focuses on their successors Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7. The main topics stayed the same albeit networking moved up further in the chapters than compared to the previous edition. As the changes between the underlying kernels (fifth edition: Kernel 6.0, sixth edition: Kernel 6.1) have been negligible, the individual chapters are pretty much the same. Most of the things described in the fifth edition are still applicable in the latest Kernel.

The first part of the book, which was released in March 2012, provided a general overview over the basic layout and concepts of the Windows Operating System before going into further details of dedicated mechanism and subsystems such as processes, threads, security, networking and so on.

The second part focuses on the remaining mechanism and subsystems such as the I/O system, storage and memory, file system, startup and shutdown as well as crash dump analysis. Compared to the last edition, most of the chapters are fairly similar in size as only marginal changes were made in the Kernel in these areas.

As before, this book contains an abundance of low-level technical information and thus requires a fairly solid background with native tools such as the WinDbg application. Given the technical nature, the book certainly can be a bit `dry' to read at times but books like this rather serve as a reference than being read cover-to-cover and thus this shouldn't be much of a concern.

The split into two separate parts is a logical decision based on the sheer amount of pages but it is the books only drawback at the same time. The first part was released about 6 months ago, which makes for a pretty long time between the two parts; especially since Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2 have been out in the field for quite some time and are imminent to be replaced by their successors. Future editions surely would benefit from a more closely release date for the individual parts.

Overall, the sixth edition continues to be the reference for any professional developer writing and debugging applications in the Windows ecosystem. Mark, David and Alex continue to provide an excellent job in presenting the information in a logical and elaborate way including hands-on experiments.

No Table of Contents in Kindle Edition!

These books have been vital to me. I own several prior versions (in paper form), and the content is extremely valuable - can't get it anywhere else. The same is true of v6 - excellent, vital content. But there is one huge glaring flaw here, and it is the sole source of my down-rating from 5 stars to 2 stars.

In the Kindle version of part 1 of this book, you get a Table of Contents for the chapters (1-7) included in that book. The Kindle version of this book, part 2, provides *no* table of contents. For a reference work of this kind, TOC is absolutely necessary. I hope someone on the author/publishing team reads this and fixes it!

Valuable source of information

I like it better than the volume 1. It appears that the authors have taken more time to get the information, not just accurate. but also easier to digest. One of complains about volume1 was lack of illustrations. This book has many more illustrations, graphs and block diagrams to assist with the understanding of the structure of software modules. Such a structure illustration does replace 1000 words.
Windows Internals version 6 remains to-date the best internals book and has not yet been replaced by the next edition.
It is obvious that this book does not repeat information from Volume 1, I am simply commenting on the impression I have after reading both. And because this book, as a source of information, is a supplement to an earlier less friendly volume I give it only 4 stars.

This is more of an introductory text, describing at a high level features and issues in 3D printing in general. I expected more of a detailed exposition on MatterControl based on the title - but its not that. Better for a beginner to 3D printing probably. You could use it to get started, then you're going to end up hitting the wiki and the forums just like the rest of us.

Always on the Cutting Edge of the Game

Over the last 5 years, Chris Brown's site Smartfootball.com has influenced the way I see (and coach) the game of football more than any other source...and I consult a lot of sources! I read 20+ books a year on football coaching, strategy, and management. Brown stays on top of the game, breaking down the newest strategies and noting why they emerged and where they evolved from. This book contains the best articles from his website all in one book. The best leaders and teachers are great simplifiers and Chris Brown makes the complex seem simple. I'm a high school head football coach and love studying the game. I have a lot of the cornerstone books like Bill Walsh's Finding the Winning Edge, Woody Hayes's Hotline to Victory, "Tiger" Ellison's Run & Shoot, Homer Smith's manuals, and Lou Holtz's The Grass is Greener. I recommend Chris Brown's book and site in the same sentence with those essential texts. All of them will change the way you see the game. The material on Urban Meyer and the Spread Offense traces the roots of the offense and the power of the "true" option as opposed to the "read" option. The chapter on the Patriots's use of "Joker" players like Gronkowski and Hernandez to create uncertainty in the defense with versatile players is essential reading -- it ties into Woody Hayes's idea of building your offense to beat the top 3 teams on your schedule (in this case the Jets, for Belichick). If you run the Spread and haven't read Brown's ideas on "Constraint" plays, you are missing out. The chapter on the No Huddle Offense and how it gives Tom Brady (of all QBs) simpler defensive structures to attack is also outstanding. The bottom line is that this is a fantastic football book from one of the best writers on football today. Buy this book and visit Brown's site and you'll be a better coach. He's as good as it gets.

Not as good as expected

I have followed Chris Brown's Smart Football website for years, and bought this book (actually 2 of them) knowing that many of the chapters in the book would be very similar to posts I had already read on his blog. What I was expecting was more of a reference book, something that I could flip through for refreshers on basic terminology and offensive and defensive schemes. Chris Brown has mentioned before that there aren't very many good general football strategy books out there, and I was hoping that his book would fill the void.

It turns out that the book is mostly copies of blog posts already on his site. In many cases the only difference between the book chapters and the blog posts are the removal of diagrams and videos explaining certain concepts. The original blog posts were very informative, and I assumed that in buying the book I would get additional material- more diagrams/examples, better organization so that it could be used as a reference, etc. But that's not what this book is.

Despite being disappointed, I didn't mind buying the book because of the enjoyment I have gotten out of his website. However, the information in the book is the same as the website, and, it turns out, the website is a better medium for understanding the concepts. I hope one day Chris does write a reference book on modern football strategy.

Too short, but still required reading

I came to SmartFootball.com somewhat late to the game, but have been an avid reader since. When I found out that Chris Brown was putting putting out a book of "best of" combined with new material, I was very excited to see the result. I have not been disappointed.

The book will be especially enjoyable to those who are unfamiliar with or new to the site. I had read only two of the older articles, but even there I found new insights after re-reading them. I suspect that even if you are familiar with all of the older content, the book is still going to be a must have based on the new content alone.

My only minor complaint is that I wish some of the articles had been longer, and the older ones expanded on further. Several times I felt like I was getting into the meat of the essay only to find it ending on the next page. Despite that, I would consider this to be required reading for anyone interested in a deeper understanding of the strategy of football, at any level.

Team Workflows using Git

The product description for this book is very accurate: it is a book focused on team workflows in software development, and it uses Git as an enabling technology. It provides a thorough overview of a lot of team and workflow concepts that aren't always emphasized in school, but are very important in industry. The author's style is quite conversational, making it a quick and easy read. This book is probably best for someone who is new to version control. It provides a good introduction and walk-through of how to use Git, but is clearly not intended to be a Git reference book--it focuses on team workflows.

My team switched to Git about a year ago, and it's been working well as a technical solution, but we've been lacking in consistency between how team members operate. This book did a good job of laying out several viable Git workflows, and I hope to be able to take what I've learned here to formalize our workflow.

Developed by the mastermind behind Linux to support the development of the kernel, Git is every developer's bread and butter. As such, there is plenty of documentation available online, as well hundreds of juicy code snippets ready to save us the day on Stack Overflow. And of course, searching for Git on the Amazon bookstore results in many pages of results. Among them, most of the books introduce the readers to Git, thus covering the basic commands and the architecture that makes it different from other VCS, such as Subversion. Git for Teams is difficult to categorize in this abudance of titles. It's neither an introduction to Git, nor an advanced text presenting lead developers and SCRUM masters how to better integreate Git within their projects. It's something in between, even though slightly more the latter than the former.

Released during the summer of 2015, and spanning some three hundred pages, Git for Teams presents the reader 12 chapters that cover many different aspects of Git, not all of them purely technical. As stated above, this book is difficult to categorize. Still, both the title and the back cover seem to rule out this being a text that teaches the basics of Git. On the back of the book, indeed, we read that This practical guide ... explains how using Git as a focal point can help your team work better together. The reader should definitely expect a book that shows how Git can be part of each and every step of the life cycle of a project. With real life examples, if possible.

The book can be hardly split into parts. While not a cookbook, each chapter stands on its own and does not require the previous ones. The first two chapters have little to do with Git. They are mostly focused on the team: how to set it up, chemistry, code of conduct. Software licenses are also taken into the discussion. The third chapter is by far the best of the whole book. It's about branching strategies. Throughout the years, indeed, many open source projects have presented and evolved models that are not broadly used: branch per feature, named branches (aka state branches), and scheduled deployment. Having a solid and consistent strategy often has a strong impact on the project itself, so that, based on the team size and distribution, it's important to pick a good branching strategy. The author presents four approaches in her book. Each is explained and also represented with friendly diagrams meant to give the reader a better overview of the whole process.

Chapter four gets us back to the first two: it discusses a topic, having a ticketing system, that while interesting, is not really about Git. Git is instead the guest star of the following chapters. Here the reader is presented the very basic Git commands, from cloning up to tracking remote repositories, passing through fetch and pull. Finally, the book ends discussing GitHub, Gitlab and BitBucket.

Thoughts. I think the title of this book is misleading. As the back cover states, this book should be about getting Git into the daily work flow of our team, not about how to set up a team and teach its members the basics of Git. Title apart, I think that this Git for Teams tries to cover too much terrain, ending up not covering well any of the topics. On the one hand, indeed, there are chapters presenting some of the very basic commands of Git. But just a part of them. If the team knows Git, these are not useful. If the ream does not, these are not enough. On the other hand, chapter three, which presents different branching strategies is not bad per se, but it's all alone, surrounded by another eleven chapters talking about other things.

I must admit that the book is easy to read, even if there is not a real flow of the information. As stated already, indeed, each chapter stands more or less on its own. The author presents a lot of diagrams and images which are easy to understand and informative. Thumbs up there.

Tying it all up, I did not like this book. I do not judge the content itself, but the fact that most of it has little to do with Git at all. Too bad chapter 3 was all alone. That is definitely what lead developers and project managers are interested into. Setting up a team and software licenses are interesting topics. But they do not really fit here.
