About the Author
Ruth Duskin Feldman is an award-winning writer and educator. With Diane E. Papalia and Sally Wendkos Olds, she coauthored the fourth and the seventh through the twelfth editions of Human Development and the eighth through the twelfth editions of A Child's World. She also is coauthor, with Dr. Papalia, Harvey Sterns and Cameron J. Camp, of Adult Development and Aging. A former teacher, she has developed educational materials for all levels from elementary school through college and has prepared ancillaries to accompany the Papalia-Olds books. She is author or coauthor of four books addressed to general readers, including Whatever Happened to the Quiz Kids? Perils and Profits of Growing Up Gifted. She has written for numerous newspapers and magazines and has lectured extensively and made national and local media appearances throughout the United States on education and gifted children. She received her bachelor's degree from Northwestern University, where she was graduated with highest distinction and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

Gabriela Alicia Martorell was born in Seattle, Washington, but moved as a toddler to Guatemala. At eight, she returned to the United States and lived in Northern California until leaving for her undergraduate training at the University of California, Davis. After obtaining her B.S. in Psychology, she earned her Ph.D. in Developmental and Evolutionary Psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Since that time, she has taught at a number of learning institutions including Portland State University, Norfolk State University, and her current full-time position as an Associate Professor of Psychology at Virginia Wesleyan College. Gabriela has taught courses in introductory psychology, research methods, lifespan human development, infant development, child development, adolescent development, adulthood and aging, cultural issues in psychology, evolutionary psychology, developmental psychopathology, and Capstone community-based learning courses in Early Childhood Education and Aging. She is committed to teaching, mentoring, and advising. She is currently conducting research on attachment processes in immigrant Latino/a adolescents which is funded by the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges, and is Co-Investigator for a National Science Foundation grant focused on student retention and success in science, technology, engineering, and math.

As a professor, Diane E. Papalia has taught thousands of undergraduates at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She received her bachelor’s degree, majoring in psychology, from Vassar College and both her master’s degree in child development and family relations and her Ph.D. in life-span developmental psychology from West Virginia University. She has published numerous articles in such professional journals as Human Development, International Journal of Aging and Human Development, Sex Roles, Journal of Experimental Child Psychology and Journal of Gerontology. Most of these papers have dealt with her major research focus, cognitive development from childhood through old age.

much cheaper than my bookstore!

For whatever reason, my campus bookstore does not sell the paperback version of this book. Even renting it from my bookstore was more expensive than just buying this book from this seller. I had another student ask where I got it. There is NOTHING different between this book and the hardback version the other students have in my class. Page numbers are the same, word-for-word everything is the same. The seller even rushed the shipping at no additional cost to me when I wrote to them that I needed it for a class. All in all, a happy purchase.

RENTER BEWARE!

I made the mistake of renting this textbook from apex_media in an attempt to save money. It seemed like a great idea since renting was only $51.75 as compared to $136.99 for purchase. Unfortunately the copy they sent me had been heavily used and the binding began to come apart by the end of the semester. This text was for an online course so it was never transported in a book bag or mishandled in any way. There was nothing I could do because it was past the 30 day return window when it started coming apart. After my class was completed I promptly returned the text. Now I have received an email from Amazon notifying me that I have been charged an additional $171.30 and they are sending the book back to me. Not only have I been forced to buy a book I no longer need, but I have been charged $223.05 for a used book that I could have gotten new for $136.99! I really wish this would have worked out considering that I will need over $700 worth of textbooks for next semester. Now I know it is better to buy and resale than try and rent from Amazon.

The textbook itself is great however the digital version is just a copy and therefore you cannot change the size of the font, which is very smAll. It was a struggle to read for my class each week and would not recommend the kindle version of this book.

He helps large-scale enterprise customers to select the right technology solutions for their business needs and provides technical consultancy for various types of network designs and architectures. Marwan has been in the networking industry for more than 12 years and has been involved in architecting, designing, and implementing various large-scale networks, some of which are global service provider-grade networks. Marwan has also worked as a technical consultant with Dimension Data Australia, a Cisco Global Alliance Partner; network architect with IBM Australia global technology services; and other Cisco partners and IT solution providers. He holds a Master of Science degree in internetworking from the University of Technology, Sydney. Marwan also holds other certifications such as Cloud Architect Expert (EMCCAe), Cisco Certified Design Professional (CCDP), Cisco Certified Network Professional – Voice (CCNP Voice), and Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE). Marwan was selected as a Cisco Designated VIP by the Cisco Support Community (CSC) (official Cisco Systems forums) in 2012, and by the Solutions and Architectures subcommunity in 2014. The CCDE Study Guide is a great starting point for those venturing down that certification path

Cisco introduced the CCDE (Cisco Certified Design Expert) certification a few years back to provide an expert-level certification in the design track analogous to the well-known configuration, implementation, and troubleshooting skills based CCIE (Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert). For individuals wishing to prove their design skills, the CCDE sits at the top of the design-focused Cisco certification ladder.

The CCDE Study Guide is a great starting point for those venturing down that certification path, and although it is on my radar, I’m currently pursuing the CCDP (Cisco Certified Design Professional) certification. I have found this book to be a good resource for that exam as I’m preparing for it. Cisco recently updated that track and there isn’t a study guide out yet.

I’ve found the material to be highly technical, yet I haven’t had trouble understanding the concepts. I will say there are technologies and methodologies that are new to me, and I’ve been in IT for over 15 years. The more you know, the more you realize you have no idea!

I would recommend this book to those pursuing the CCDE for sure, and if you want supplemental material for the CCDP, I’d say it is a great resource too.

The book gives an excellent review of the various technologies from the perspective of an architect. CCDE being an exam that test you on your design skills, the book does focus on design and also provides comparison between various design options for certain technologies in the enterprise and service provider environments. No one study guide book can be enough to pass any Cisco expert level exam. But definitely this book would be a good review book to go over the basic design principles of all the technologies a month before your exam date. The book does a good job in breaking down and organizing the various approaches and design options in table formats at the end of each section. There are some brief case studies, but I wish there were more. Perhaps a appendix or final chapter with a large enterprise and one large SP case study would have been nice. But definitely, as a study guide for purpose of reviewing as you near you exam date, this is an excellent book for CCDE written and Lab exam!

Great book on Route/Switch design, lots of detail but not too intimidating

I really enjoyed this book. I've read a bunch of Cisco books on both Routing and Switching and Design, and the author was still able to provide a significant amount of new and interesting material I haven't seen before. The DMVPN design and datacenter switching design were particularly compelling portions for me. Even though the CCDE might seem a bit daunting, this should not deter you from picking up this book. I found the author to be clear and to the point, but still able to present a significant amount of detail. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in CCDE, and anyone who is interested in learning more about routing and switching design.

You Won't Be Able to Put it Down!!

I read a lot, and I read a lot of Christian books. I have never read a book like this one. It is well organized and easy to read, and for those who are scholarly, its conclusions are well documented and supported with Scripture. I read it with longing, and I read it with hope. If you are tired of living your Christian life as a practical agnostic, Bill Johnson shows the way for you to live in a different way. The only reason we believers are left here on this earth is to express the love, compassion, and good news of the Gospel with the people we interact with on a daily basis. Just as Jesus healed the sick, cast out demons, and did other things supernaturally, so too can we. "I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in Me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father." John 14:12.

A prize and a joy!

This book is one of a kind. Pastor Johnson is humble when he preaches and powerful when he writes. I actually started slowing down while reading because I didn't want the book to end. I wished I had been taking notes the whole time so I could tape all the POWERFUL statements up all over my house. The book is full of miracle encounters with their church in California and powerful scriptural truths. It reintroduced me to my Father's true nature. I was blessed to see Pastor Johnson preach and more blessed when he prayed for me. I got to see the principles he writes about manifested in the total healing of nerve damage in my arm and in the complete disappearance of a kidney mass. (All medically documented.) Our God is awesome! You'll love every page of this book....It's balanced and full of truth. But you may want to order two or three!

This is anything BUT

To those who would contend that the teaching in this book is false, the Kingdom of God is not ultimately set up to appeal to the human intellect, but to point back to the Father, whose system of logic transcends ours.

Many of the actions Jesus took when He walked the earth were intended to offend the natural mind of the Pharisees. "The Kingdom of God is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to those who are being saved it is the power of God, to the pulling down of strongholds."

When we place total reliance on the teachings of others in lieu of an individual Spirit-led understanding of the Scriptures, we unknowingly adopt the same attitude the Israelites took on when they chose to let Moses discern God's voice for them.

Is this to say that we should abandon our historical understanding of Scripture? No. It is to say that theology is merely a human guide for understanding the Scriptures and not intended to replace the study of them. The Holy Spirit is the One the Father has ordained to bring the written word to life, and it is the inspiration (or breath, if you will) of God through the Spirit (rhema) that brings the understanding of the written word (logos). (Incidentally, the Greek word for "word" when describing the sword of the Spirit in Ehpesians 6 is "rhema," not "logos.")

As a Charismatic believer (if that is cultic to some, I'm sorry you feel that way), even I had to mull over much of what Bill Johnson wrote in this book. I was especially caught off guard with the statement, "Most people repent enough to get saved, but not enough to see the Kingdom." However, upon taking on the role of the Berean and considering this statement in light of Scripture ("analogy of faith" is the seminarian term for this), God revealed that I had been too focused on the natural realm by relying on my own understanding, and that I should repent of this God-limiting mindset by allowing Him to provide further revelation.

Again, God is not bound by our theology. His ways are higher than our ways, and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts. To enter and experience the Kingdom in action, I must approach it as a child, and not deceive myself by thinking that my M. Div. or Th. D. automatically qualifies me as one who knows God's voice. (For more on hearing the voice of God, I recommend "Communion With God" by Mark Virkler ([...] ).)

Did you ever notice in Luke that the main message Jesus had before the Sermon on the Mount was, "Repent, for the Kingdom of God is at hand?" Did you also notice that beyond that, His preaching consisted not of words, but of signs, wonders, and various workings of miracles, followed by a statement that he needed to preach in other areas beyond Galilee? Bottom line: not a lot of words, but a whole lot of action!

I believe this is Bill Johnson's main point-- signs and wonders must follow those who believe. In a postmodern world, where traditional logic has less and less value in the marketplace of ideas, a love-motivated work or sign is more likely to generate a greater hunger for God and draw one into a relationship with the Father. Note that when Jesus performed signs and wonders, people then paid attention to what He had to say about the Kingdom of heaven.

St. Francis of Assisi said, "Preach the gospel, and if necessary, use words." I believe what Bill Johnson hits on in this book puts that statement in a whole new light. I highly recommend that everyone desiring to see the Kingdom come in power should read this book in preparation.

Great Book

This was a SHORT glimpse into Sutton's past. In this book, we find out when Thayer ran away, how Laurel got into the Lying Game, and Sutton's relationship with Garrett. We are also introduced to Ethan ( for a very brief period of time) and quite possibly, Sutton's twin!! Overall, good book.

I really enjoy these Novellas!

Very short novella but a lot of insight into the past which I like.

This book goes into how Laurel got into the Lying Game, how Sutton got with Garrett, and Thayer running away. I think still want another Novella into the past because I am enjoying these just as much as the books!

Sutton seems to do many mean and rude things to her friends and sister then she does 1 good thing and I feel like maybe it is suppose to make the reader see a softer side to her and I still don't see it so it is hard to like her.

She is dealing with feeling second best to Laurel with her family and now her friends and jealous seems to fuel her. She is selfish with Thayer and her sister. I mean they are best friends. She just drives me crazy. I love to hate her. Another good book!

A glipse into the begining

I started reading this series shortly before the tv show started. This book was a cool read, a lil short but, takes you back to before the first book began. It helps you understand more about how certain relationships came about. I thought reading the book would give me a lil more insight into the show or vice versa but because they are both so different it really doesn't give anything away. I'm so anxious to find out who is blackmailing the twin and demanding she pretend to be Sutton, lol but at the same time once you find out then it means no more series!!!

If you miss this tiny warning and proceed with renting, you will most likely receive a used book without a working access code unless you happen to receive a new book for your rental. If you receive a used book for your rental but need the access code, you will need to either keep the rental and buy an access code from Pearson or another source or return the rental and buy a new book with an access code. If you choose to return the rental, your money will be tied up until Rent U receives the returned textbook then refunds your rental fee. Either way, you will need to allow sufficient time to source and obtain your access code. Calling the rental product a textbook with access card package when there is no guarantee that the access card is included is deceptive and needs to be corrected.

It's alive!

I love this Biology book. I first studied biology nearly twenty-five years ago with a huge and lovely biology book written by an author whose name unfortunately escapes me. I loved that book, and have always judged future biology texts against that one; this one measures up well against my memory of that text.
The fourth edition of `Biology: Concepts & Connections' is an excellent, thorough introduction to the science of biology. It is used at the community college where I tutor (biology and other sciences) for general education and nursing students. The book is divided into seven major sections: The Life of a Cell; Cellular Reproduction and Genetics; Concepts of Evolution; Biological Diversity; Animals; Plants; and finally, general Ecology.
After an interesting introduction, which talks about discovery-based science in addition to theoretical/hypothesis science with interesting examples (the Australian Flying Fox, flies that mimic spiders), the first unit on the Life of the Cell looks at basic structure and chemistry of cells. Even though this text deals with chemistry, a chemistry background is not required. Care is taken from the outset to relate the biology tasks to `everyday life', things that people know and care about - there is a look at athletic performance with slow-twitch and fast-twitch muscles, light in the lives of plants, and even look at the possibility of extraterrestrial life.
The unit on Cellular Reproduction and Genetics introduces a hot topic in general conversation today, including discussions of medicine and law in addition to the basic theory, with some of the latest information included. The units on Concepts of Evolution and Biological Diversity include new features such as discussion on mitochondrial DNA comparison and the use of molecular clocks to date divergence in evolutionary paths. Topics such as increasing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics are discussed, and the interesting evolutionary situation of Australia, separated from the major landmasses of the rest of the world, shows an interesting side-show on biological diversity.
The unit on Animals will be the most interesting for many, and the diversity here includes discussions from geckos to bears to human traits shared with and different from other animals. Particularly for our nursing students, the sections on respiration (anaerobic and aerobic), broken bones, immune systems, blood-cell diseases and the like really drive home the need for a basic understanding of biology.
The units on Plants and Ecology draw in the larger mass of living things sharing our planet, work to show how the environment operates from the standpoint of individual plants to entire ecosystems. Interesting current topics such as organic farming, population ecology, endangered species and global warming drive home the importance of biology.
The book is very colourful, both in text copy and in pictures. Headers reinforce the broader topics while modules give key concepts within each broad topic. Diagrams are arranged with numbered steps to help understanding, and there are frequent references to website and CD-ROM additions. Key questions are asked at each conceptual point. The `behind the scenes' information helps reinforce the concepts both with the hot topics involved in biological issues today, as well as the personalities driving the science in key areas. Each chapter has a summary of key points, concept questions and multiple-choice questions for test preparation. There are well over 100 `Connection' Modules and `Talking about Science' Modules. Each of the 38 chapters has an interesting, inviting essay as introduction. There are probably 200 CD-ROM and website activities to engage the students, everything from the cloning of genes in bacteria to steroid hormone action to the Honeybee waggle dance.
This is a very good book, with lots of information - it is also a flexible book, and certain portions can be omitted in a syllabus without diminishing the overall text. I find myself constantly glancing through the chapters and reading the interesting essays and connection modules between my tutoring appointments. That's the mark of a good textbook.

After our recent earthquake, many of us who are focused on lifelines have been scouring the literature for useful recommendations for loss reduction provisions. This is a key text. It evaluates the responses of seven large organizations in a "best methods" type of analysis to distill specific actions that assist recovery following an earthquake. The monograph discusses political and regulatory issues and preventive evaluation approaches. The authors are commended for such a useful work.

Good writing and excellent technical analysis. This monograph is focused on the preventive side of the seismic field. If you are active in the risk field or in the management of lifeline systems, this book is vital. Highly recommended.
