Incredible Teacher and Notable Author

I had Dr. Mestrovic for one of my Sociology classes at Texas A&M. Not only was he an intelligent and interesting teacher, his theories were well founded and fit society today. This book outlines some of his theories while giving light to why people act the way they do. Get the book if you want to know why President Clinton is still in office or why the norms in our society are they way they are.

The Definitive History

"Conquest of the Incas" is almost unquestionably the best book ever written about the 16th century Spanish conquest of the Inca empire in Peru and neighboring countries. It replaces Prescott's famous "Conquest of Peru," a brilliant piece of research and writing but one compiled at a Boston desk from archival materials. Hemming has much more personal familiarity with the subject and a much greater range of sources to draw on.

How it was that conquistador Francisco Pizarro and less than 200 men were able to overthrow the Inca empire of 15 million subjects is one of the great tales of history. "Conquest" details that struggle for power in convincing and fascinating detail, focusing on Pizarro and his brothers who were all brutal, deceitful, and courageous. Hemming gives almost equal time to the Incas and their leaders as they struggle against or accommodate themselves to Spanish rule. (As will be evident to contemporary visitors to Cuzco and Andean Peru, the Spanish conquest never penetrated very deeply. The Inca culture and language still live; Pizarro is despised by most Peruvians and the last Inca, Tupac Amaru, is a national hero.)

The story of the conquest has been romanticized in the classic play "Royal Hunt of the Sun" which is well worth seeing for its portraits of Pizarro and the Inca emperor Atahualpa. But the capture and murder of Atahualpa is only the beginning of the story. What followed was a 40 year struggle between Inca and Spaniard (and among Spaniards) for control of Peru that ended with the beheading of Tupac Amaru. The last chapter of the book moves into modern times as it describes the search for the lost Inca province of Vilcabamba and the discovery of Machu Pichu in the early 20th century. The mystery of the last Incas and their jungle retreats has fascinated writers and achaelogists until the present day -- as has the Inca empire, perhaps the most enigmatic of history.

"Conquest of the Incas" was published in 1970. Were it to be revised today more emphasis would probably be placed on the role of smallpox epidemics that disrupted the Inca empire and made it ripe for conquest. But that's about the only deficiency I find in the book. It's one of the best histories ever written -- so good that it has found few imitators.

Good Read

I began this book just before my visit to Peru and read it along the way - a great way to prepare for the trip and to absorb more during an incredibly educational experience. It really was a key part of my enjoyment of the trip, because I was able to glean more from our various guides and better appreciate the ruins and spanish buildings, particularly in and around Cuzco. The book is an interesting read, but note that the fall of the Incas is essentially completed during the first 100 pages - a good thing if you want a thorough understanding of the history in a very brief time, a bad thing if you were looking for more detail. (I actually liked this aspect of the book.) Another key to this book's success is Hemming's ability to convey who was actually writing the history since of course the goings on would be viewed and recorded differently by spanish conquistadors vs. religious types, to say nothing of the difference of opinion about what happened between the Spanish and the native quechuas. He does a good job of illustrating the different views and allowing the reader to come to their own conclusions about what may have actually happened. I found out about this book from Lonely Planet-the key travel book for the area-and I agree with them and thoroughly recommend it. No trip to Peru should be taken without it!

Gripping account of an unequal struggle between peoples

This is a readable and authoritative account of Pizarro's conquest of Peru and search for El Dorado in the 1530's: a must-read backgrounder for those who plan a trip to Cuzco and Machu Picchu and an astounding account of war strategies and incredible upsets in a hostile mountain terrain between unequal forces with vastly different technologies. It gives real understanding into present-day relationships between the Spanish and native peoples in South America. I couldn't put it down.

Different kind of series for Carver, not as full-on, but a good read as ever ...

The second installment in Carver's first series, "Sleeping Rough." Fascinating characters, compelling story. Not as intriguing, erotically, as his usual stuff, but still the great writing and off-beat voice of the main character kept me going, and there's still way more on offer here than most of your MM erotica reads. I'm grateful that such a capable writer, for whatever reason, is dabbling in this kind of fiction.

Not for the risk averse

This book intelligent and is well written. However, it's discussion is contingent on accepting that maximizing the geometric growth rate (i.e. logarithmic utility) is the best objective function for a trader. This produces a very aggressive betting strategy. I would advise finding out a little more on "Kelly Betting" (try Blackjack resources) before going ahead with this.

Some gems, but very poorly presented

I just read the "not for the innumerate" review on this book, and I agree. But I would like to clarify why the book disappoints. It's not that there are too many equations, but that there are too few equations and way too much jargon-laden hand waving. The hand waving, unfortunately, does not compensate for the clarity sacrificed by omitting the math. Vince's thesis that optimal f will maximize geometric returns is a valuable one, as is the concept of trading at dynamic fractional f to control risk. Unfortunately, he does not get specific enough to show us how to define and use optimal f in real life stock trading. I have an extensive math background, but I cannot get convincing quantitative results in Excel using his presentation, even after re-deriving for myself all the equations he deigns to show us. Perhaps if I had a futures trading background I would find his prose easier to follow, but I would have been much better off with the equations, in an appendix at least.

Optimal f will make your trading go belly up

Optimal F is Ralph Vince's baby but it doesn't take into consideration that there is a trade out there that will take you out of the market. I trade professionally and would never trade anywhere near with the risk he talks about. The best traders I know are always prepared for the worst case secenario and just want to keep playing the game. Optimal F will take you out of the market very quickly.

But when she starts to see things in her new boss that she likes, it leaves her wanting to cross enemy lines to get what she desires...

It was a true pleasure to meet Blake and Kira, the intense chemistry between these two was like a magnet that pulled me right into their world and had me hanging onto their every word. Their story was filled with passion, intensity, and some heated moments that had me in need of a fan! This was my first time reading a book by this author, and I can say with complete certainty it won't be my last!! Definitely a VERY impressive first read, and a book I think should be added to the top of everyone's reading lists!!

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book from the publisher. Cute story. Blake is a work alcoholic. He has lost so many secretaries because of his hours and looks. Kira gave up a high power job and just want to save dogs and her mother’s building. Blake makes a proposition that she works for him as a secretary and he will help her with her charities and saving her mother’s building from revitalization. Once the line are blurred and they transition from boss and security to more; they question each other feelings. A misunderstanding puts a wedge between them but Blake comes through in the end. Loved it. Recommended read.

I'm so happy I have received this book in advance. I read it in one sitting, because I couldn't put it down. The plot held my interest through the whole book. Also, the characters were real and easy to connect to.

The story starts with Blake, who's a real estate development CEO, being bumped over by Kira and her bunch of dogs. As they part ways neither of them know that fate has other plans for them. When latter that day Blake's secretary suddenly quits and Blake finds himself in dire need of a new one, who better to fill that position other than Kira, that came to his office in hopes to convince him to rethink the demolition of her mothers building.

I quite enjoyed reading Blake's POV. He's your typical workaholic, who has a strict working policy that includes no sexual relationships with his co-workers. It was great to see his inner battle between his working morals and trying not to break his own rules and fall for Kita. In the end, he has almost no choice but to give in to their strong chemistry. Also, seeing how he is with dogs definitely brought him some brownie points.

As for Kira's character, I really liked that she wants to make a difference in her community. She knows what she wants and goes for it. She's also very smart and knows how to achieve her goals. At heart she a wonderful person with a big love for rescued dogs that she even brings to work. Both main characters are made for each other.

For such a short read, the story has developed characters that gradually fall in love. The only thing that bothered me, was the fast paced drama at the end and how they resolved their misunderstanding.

All in all, this is an interesting and pleasant read. :)

Excellent and much needed analysis of social media

I have been teaching Social Media online for the MA media studies program for several years at The New School in New York City and had never found a completely satisfactory book that provided a theoretical and historical grounding for social media until I came across this one. It is a thorough, well written, scholarly yet still very accessible description and analysis of the media, communication and sociological foundations from which the current social media phenomenon has emerged. I learned a lot too from the author, and it was an enjoyable read as well.

I plan on using it as a required text for all the future classes I teach in social media.

I thought that this book had a lot of valuable information about different social media platforms and their privacy policies, however at times I thought it was not a very engaging read. It was great for detailed information in terms of breaking down each media platform and taking a look into their business models, technology, ownership, users and governance. I also thought that it was good if you are interested in the history of technology and social media. It not only gives you the background of social media and how it started, but somewhat of technology itself. She talks about the development of the World Wide Web by Tim Burners Lee, which is crucial for the start of social media. It takes a deep look into how each platform operates and how they will continue to progress forward with this push of social media. It talks about how social media is what we will all be using in the future and its important as marketers and PR people to get rid of the digital divide that we still have going on. We want everyone to be able to understand social media and how it works because that is our future. We will be doing most things online and through connectivity.

I am a journalism student and this book was a great way to finish my last semester in an interesting read, giving my brain a break from the technical and hands-on knowledge and letting myself, at times, get lost in the way our culture can forget how "social" media all began. This book gives details and in-depth overview about the history of social media that Journalism 101 classes can only touch on in a short period of time. Journalism classes today are trying to keep up with the technology and focus their classes on new media however, Jose Van Dijck's "The Culture of Connectivity: A Critical History of Social Media," takes readers back to Napster, and back to when it all began with Web 2.0, what is referred in the book as vital time for making connections on the internet.

Van Dijck makes her book relevant by showing her readers that social connectivity thrives on 5 platforms: ownership, technology, governance, business model, user/ usage, and content. In each chapter the reader learns how various media works in these platforms and why our culture is not taking notice of important changes such as privacy matters. Read this book if you want a philosophical look into what users of media today would knock-off as being a non-philosophical topic, however, they may realize it may only appear this way because it's changed a culture and isn't slowing down yet.
