I would give this more than 5 stars if I could - great, great book!

With Veterans Day approaching, it's the perfect time to look at Peter Chrisp's book "World War II, Fighting for Freedom." Chrisp is a British children's author of books of history with over sixty books published.

The beauty of this book is in the strong visual details, the tidbits and factoids, as well as the quotes taken from news reports and radio broadcasts. For example, the first opening pages show a map of the world in September of 1942. It shows Allied and Axis and countries, and the territory under their control or influence. The battles of World War II are also indicated, with the key distinguishing major land, tank, and sea battles.

Some of the photos that are shown are not the typical ones shown in the classroom, and I love that about this book. My favorite is the one showing the Finnish ski troops, fighting in the winter snow. Skis, parkas, and gas masks...what a combo!

Another key factor of the book is the tag mark with the year listed and the major factor of the conflict. 1919-1933 is listed as "The Gathering Storm" and 1933-1939 was the "Steps to War," but it was Friday, September 1st, 1939 that brought the "Blitzkrieg on Poland."

Each of the entries has a description after the heading and then includes a mixture of maps, photos, diagrams, and quotes - giving a complete overview of what happened on the day or during that battle.

This is a historical overview in its fullest, as Chrisp also includes a section on World War II campaigns such as "Dig for Victory." This book even shows that the British royal family was issued with ration books to show that nobody had special privileges.

The glossary at the back defines the who and what of the terminology used in the book, with everything from "Allied Powers" to "Strategy" listed. Not sure how to define a "Convoy" or "Fascism" or "Siege?" You can look those words up in the glossary.

This is a great book for your library or your classroom, to help with a school report or to learn about the history of World War II.

About the Author

Peter Dowsett is a British audio engineer known for his experience with many facets of the music industry including studio engineering, mixing, mastering and live sound

In the studio he has worked at Metropolis studios with clients including Pharrell Williams, Snoop Dogg, Rick Ross, Downton Abbey, Nick Jonas, and Dappy. His work has been synced on ABC, Channel 5 and featured on cover CDs for Metal Hammer magazine. He has received extensive international radio and television airplay.

In a live sound environment Peter has toured with Ugly Kid Joe, Fozzy, Twisted Wheel and Beholder and has engineered major festivals including Download, Sonisphere, Wacken Polish Woodstock, and Lockerse. He has also worked FOH or monitors at Coventry Kasbah, Birmingham Institute, and Nuneaton Queens Hall for The Darkness, Buzzcocks, Foals, Miles Kane, Dodgy, Ash, Cast, Chase and Status, Pulled Apart by Horses, and We are the Ocean.

Mr. Davis' book is a thorough and excellently written history of pesticides from the 1960's onwards. I don't want to repeat the reviews above, but suffice it to say the reviews are accurate and if readers would like to get an understanding of this area of the history of ecological and environmental protection in the US, this is an excellent start. Though clearly an academic work, Mr. Davis employs a style of writing that makes the book compelling to read to the commerical reader.

Gandhi's nonviolent struggles in South Africa and India had already brought him to such a level of notoriety, adulation, and controversy that when asked to write an autobiography midway through his career, he took it as an opportunity to explain himself. Although accepting of his status as a great innovator in the struggle against racism, violence, and, just then, colonialism, Gandhi feared that enthusiasm for his ideas tended to exceed a deeper understanding. He says that he was after truth rooted in devotion to God and attributed the turning points, successes, and challenges in his life to the will of God. His attempts to get closer to this divine power led him to seek purity through simple living, dietary practices (he called himself a fruitarian), celibacy, and ahimsa, a life without violence. It is in this sense that he calls his book The Story of My Experiments with Truth, offering it also as a reference for those who would follow in his footsteps. A reader expecting a complete accounting of his actions, however, will be sorely disappointed.

Although Gandhi presents his episodes chronologically, he happily leaves wide gaps, such as the entire satyagraha struggle in South Africa, for which he refers the reader to another of his books. And writing for his contemporaries, he takes it for granted that the reader is familiar with the major events of his life and of the political milieu of early 20th-century India. For the objective story, try Yogesh Chadha's Gandhi: A Life. A transparent glimpse into the mind of a truly great soul

In many ways, this is a somewhat unusual autobiography. It is as remarkable for what Gandhi decides to leave out as for what he includes. He obviously didn't intend to deal with every major event, and delve into every area. It is less a comprehensive narrative than it is a series of reflections on his life. Some have criticized the book because he often deals more intensely with questions about what kind of diet he would follow than many of the great historical achievements of his life. But Gandhi was who he was as an international figure because of who he was as an ethical individual. The moral seriousness with which he broods over his diet reveals a great deal about who he is as a person. As a side note, I should add that when I read this book, I had been thinking about becoming a vegetarian, and while I found no new arguments for doing so in this book, his moral example gave me the courage to do so.
The greatest quality about this book is one it shares with most of Gandhi's writing: when he writes you get the sense that he is giving us his unedited thoughts. During even the greatest crises in his struggle for Indian independence, Gandhi's writings have the quality of a transcription of what he is thinking. More than any figure I can think of, Gandhi revealed precisely what he was thinking. The almost complete lack of artifice in his writing is one of the most impressive aspects of his writing as a whole and of his autobiography in particular. One is struck by his honesty, by his humility, and by his intense, almost overwhelming, moral passion.
This is not a literary masterpiece. If one goes into it expecting it to rival such other autobiographies as Rousseau's CONFESSIONS or Nabokov's SPEAK, MEMORY or even Franklin's AUTOBIOGRAPHY, one will be disappointed. Although he was a prolific writer, Gandhi was not a great writer. He was unquestionably one of the towering figures of the 20th century, but it was because of what he did, not because of what he wrote. But for some of us, encountering so directly on the printed page such a fundamentally great soul can be close to overpowering.

My all-time favorite book

I first read this book in the spring of 1998 when I was home with a cold and fever, and I can say that it is one of the best things that ever happened to me. The events described in the book are a hundred years old, but Gandhi has a way of describing their essence which is timeless, and will grip you in a way that makes them entirely relevant to today's world. It made me wonder how the world might have been if people today only followed his ideas. But this is no boring lecture on politics or nonviolence. In fact quite the opposite - it is the sparkling story of a very special man told in his own words. We learn about truth and non-violence in the best way possible, by observing Gandhi's actions as he goes about matters small and big. It brought Gandhi to life in a very special way. I always admired his principles, but now feel closer to Gandhi the man. This is a first-hand account that cannot be ignored. My only regret was that the book ended much too soon (mid 1920's) and there was nothing to cover the rest of his life. I can think of no person of any age who would not be greatly enriched by this book. For the interested, I found the companion book "Satyagraha in South Africa" (also by Gandhi) to be just as good.

Portrait of a man as explorer.

There is a lot of discussion as to whether this book is actually an autobiography or not. I am not sure whether it is really a question relevant to the work, but it is probably relevant for people who want to decide whether or not to buy the book. So. It is a recounting by Gandhi of his life as it related to his search for truth. It is not a general autobiography, although you will find autobiographical details. It is also not a series of essays about truth-- Gandhi writes very personally about his search for truth, not necessarily about what he found there. I would say that an autobiography about this specific aspect of his life is a fair enough description.

The book is divided into many small chapters. It is clearly intended for a large audience and the chapters are largely able to stand on their own and simply written. Gandhi addresses issues such as food habits, comparative religion, political involvement, justice and the law, and chastity.

I found it quick and easy to read. I liked his voice as a writer very much. I had the feeling that he was not hiding or leading. He left the reader free to either agree or disagree with his actions and conclusions. Most writers in this space have neither the clarity nor the confidence exhibited in The Story of My Experiments With Truth. More, I enjoyed the book. The tone is often wry and sprightly, and as a whole it is very engaging to read. I might have wished that Gandhi had spent more time on some of the subjects, but that was not the purpose of the work.

Recommended for people with an interest in Gandhi, Indian/South African history, or spiritual exploration. The simple accessible style should make it available to a wide range of readers across virtually all age groups.

DOUG WEAD is one of the few living historians to have written about all of the American presidents. From Washington to Obama, he is an expert on presidential families. His book, All the President Children, which covered the presidents and their families, was a New York Times bestseller.

There are some things that even dirty money from Saudi Arabia and media bias can’t buy!

Madame president lost the race to business expert Donald Trump, but If you’ve watched any main-stream media coverage of the election cycle, you might have been surprised, given how biased and unfairly they treated president Trump. All of the polls were wrong. I mean EVERY single one of them. Remember the polls that gave Clinton an over 90% chance of winning? The one’s that gave Trump a 1% chance of winning? Me too.
But if you’re like me, you had a feeling he’d win all along. Looking at his rally turnouts vs. that of “Madame President”, you’d have been a fool to think otherwise.

In his book, “Game of Thorns”, Doug Wead’s expains how even with almost all of the media on her side, Hillary Clinton still managed to lose the presidency. Through a combination of her lack of ability to connect with the middle class, constant pandering, and absurd levels of corruption, Clinton proved that there are some things that even dirty money from Saudi Arabia and media bias can’t buy.

This book is a must read, even for those who are still upset that Madame president lost. Heck, you might learn a thing or two- Like why you shouldn’t insult more than half of the United States, or you know, immediately label anybodywith a different opinion than yours racist, sexist, mysognistic, and so on.

None on election likely to be better than this

Douglas Wead's brand new book on last year's election is superb. His own background and the tone of the book are a bit right of center, but he writes very factually. Part II on the 27 year Clintons history contains facts almost no one knows or remembers. Overseas readers will be especially enlightened. It spends more time explaining the candidates and their past rather than deep detail on the election itself. This would seem a likely reason it is out so quickly. Sadly, it lacks photos and more importantly, no index, but the voluminous endnotes show deep internet research. It is a must for political junkies.
