Amazing Story of a Double Cancer Survivor, But That's It

It's Not About the Bike My Journey Back to Life is Lance Armstrong's death defying tale of how he survived cancer and returned to professional bike racing in Europe. The first time I read this book, which was before his fall from grace, I loved it. I believed then that Lance Armstrong was a courageous cancer survivor, a remarkable seven time winner of the Tour de France, and an American cycling hero. Today, I only believe that he is a courageous cancer survivor. His fall from cycling fame, grace and resultant legal problems have been well documented in the press and by Juliet Macur of the New York Times and others, so i will not repeat it here.

In his own words, Lance Armstrong does not come across as a very nice person to put it politely. His recovery from testicle and brain cancer plus his return to world class cycling is legendary and completely admirable, but it is what happened afterwards that is not so admirable. I found many hypocritical points in this book, which disturbed me, but I am going to rate this book only on the basis as an account of a remarkable, death defying cancer survivor who defied the odds and accomplished the unimaginable at that time. My wife is also a cancer survivor, and she does not believe in Lance Armstrong anymore, but I think his story of medical ressurection, literally, is important enough to give it four stars, but only for his account of beating two types of cancer, of which each one alone is very serious and life-threatening.

This is an excellent resource for people who converse in public places about Biblical issues. The last two chapters are the best. The others seem to me more wordy than is necessary to make a helpful point. So read the last two chapters first!

Misleading Title

This book contains thoughtful, well-stated, fully expressed apologetics. However, its catchy title and trendy cover is misleading; it implies that the book is a reader-friendly guide to answering tough universal questions about God. In this regard, Copan's book really misses the mark. It is written more for the academic rather than your average Christian caffeine addict, like myself. So, if you could use some help giving tangible, biblical responses to questions like "If God is good, then why is there so much suffering?" then I recommend Randy Newman's book Questioning Evangelism. After you read it, bring a seeking friend to the nearest Starbucks, and start a "God" conversation over a cup o' Joe.

A valuable key to the standard international nomenclature

The Pocket Atlas is a useful and economical illustrated reference to the standard international nomenclature of human anatomy (Nomina Anatomica, NA). Most of the book follows a uniform format with typically four or five number-coded black-and-white line drawings on each right-hand page, and on the facing page, a key to the illustrations with the English name, Latin (NA) name, and a concise definition of each term. A typical entry is
23 Greater palatine foramen. Foramen palatinum majus. Opening into the greater palatine canal located near the posterior margin of the bony palate between the palatine bone and maxilla. B E
(B and E are figure references.)
Some entries include, and indicate by different bracket styles, alternative but equally accepted synonyms, unofficial expressions for a structure found in the Nomina Anatomica, unofficial synonyms not found in the NA, and expressions newly modified or added by the International Committee. There is a key to the bracketing and font changes inside the front cover for easy reference. End-matter includes a bibliography of 94 literature citations and a thorough 66-page index.
I wouldn't regard the Pocket Atlas as highly important for routine undergraduate teaching or a layperson's reference. The illustrations are clear but unremarkable, and there are much better atlases of human anatomy available. But for anyone writing in the area of human anatomy, for students of the health professions who want a concise review, and for anyone who may be occasionally confused by the variations in terminology from one anatomical atlas to another, this should be a worthwhile addition to one's professional library. As a medical textbook writer, I find this much more useful than the Nomina Anatomica itself, which is out of print, hard to find, overly expensive, and offers no illustrations or definitions.

not an exciting or particulary helpful read , I pad apps that are 20$ are awesome

I feel this is the worst anatomy book I have ever looked at, so I quit looking at it and found better references. It contains the body we are used to, however, it is black and white photos with an organization pattern that confuses to say the least. It does have more detailed labeling and terminology than I was used to in undergrad. I think the pocket atlas is a dying trend, when there are such good pocket appliances. I recommend an I pad app like the one in this link, but I prefer essential anatomy by 3D4Medical Visible Body 3D Human Anatomy Atlas 2 for Mac [Download]

Awesome anatomy text

This book is really unique. It provides clear simple black and white drawings. All structures are labeled w/ numbers so you can quiz yourself. On the accompanying page there is a structure key that also includes short high yield discussions. I am using this book to review anatomy for my surgery clerkship and it's been great. It also provides the full spectrum of anatomy, including a very strong neuroanatomy section that even separates out cranial nerves instead of having extremely confusing and jumbled diagrams like in Netter's.

A metaphysician who had written on the secret of Hegel was congratulated upon his success in keeping the secret. One who essays an introduction to the philosophy of law may easily achieve a like success. His hearers are not unlikely to find that he has presented not one subject but two, presupposing a knowledge of one and giving them but scant acquaintance with the other. If he is a philosopher, he is not unlikely to have tried a highly organized philosophical apparatus upon those fragments of law that lie upon the surface of the legal order, or upon the law as seen through the spectacles of some jurist who had interpreted it in terms of a wholly different philosophical system. Looking at the list of authorities relied upon in Spencer's Justice, and noting that his historical legal data were taken from Maine's Ancient Law and thus came shaped by the political-idealistic interpretation of the English historical school, it is not difficult to perceive why positivist and Hegelian came to the same juristic results by radically different methods. On the other hand, if he is a lawyer, he will very likely have been able to do no more than attempt none too intelligently to work with the complicated and delicate engines of others upon the toughest and most resistant of legal materials. Until some Anglo-American jurist arises with the universal equipment of Josef Kohler the results of common-law incursions into philosophy will resemble the effort of the editorial writer who wrote upon Chinese Metaphysics after reading in the Encyclop�dia Britannica under China and Metaphysics and combining his information. Yet such incursions there must be. Philosophy has been a powerful instrument in the legal armory and the times are ripe for restoring it to its old place therein. At least one may show what philosophy has done for some of the chief problems of the science of law, what stands before us to be done in some of the more conspicuous problems of that science today in which philosophy may help us, and how it is possible to look at those problems philosophically without treating them in terms of the eighteenth-century natural law or the nineteenth-century metaphysical jurisprudence which stand for philosophy in the general understanding of lawyers.

About the Author
Roscoe Pound (Nathan) (1870-1964) was dean of Harvard Law School. Before that he was dean at the University of Nebraska School of Law. He is known as the father of the sociological jurisprudence movement and one of America's earliest leaders advocating for legal realism. He authored numerous books, including The Spirit of the Common Law, Law and Morals, and Criminal Justice in America.

A must-have for anyone studying the law

I'm a college student with a legal studies concentration. I've taken 8 courses on our legal system so far, most of which concentrate on the judicial system. In two chapters this book covers more than any textbook I've been assigned for my courses. Pound's discussions on the application of law are worthwhile in and of themselves. This is clearly the definitive classic text on american jurisprudence, most of which is still relevant despite its age.

That said, there is a downside to the book. It takes hours to read certain pages. In a few sentences Pound manages to convey the same information other authors do in pages. This is not hyperbole. I'm currently taking Judicial Process and Business Law. The combined texts for those classes border on 750 pages. This one book discusses all of the same topics, in much more precise and clear language, in 168 pages. If you want to learn why the law is the way it is, this is the one book you must buy.

A "Republished" Book

I just received this and I have not yet read the contents of the book. Buyers should be aware that this edition is a poorly typeset "republished" version typical of print-on-demand output. It has an awkward page size of 8.5x11" with ill-conceived margins and distracting page references (referencing the pagination of the original on which this is based) throughout the text. The cover images are severely pixelated and the spine lacks any title information. This was not what I expected and was not sufficiently indicated on the Amazon product detail page.

"Joe" is a real trader (surprise!)

I've known "Joe" for years now, from the time he hosted me on a tour of a 500-ft submarine destroyer battleship in the North Sea - all the way to now, as he successfully manages his own funds on a few hours of trading per day, with a low-risk strategy. The reason I tell you this is because it's impossible to say that this review isn't biased. I know the guy. I trust him. I plan on investing some of my own investment capital with him in 2011. So with that preface, I want to tell you just a couple of reasons that this book matters, and why you should read it.

In a world where advice-givers come and go, and never show you any evidence of their actual trading ability, "Joe" sets himself apart. You're not just reading a book about theory: you're reading about his own practice. This is what he really does, and he proves it: his trading performance is public, posted real-time, on Twitter, every single day. He doesn't _tell_ you that he trades. He trades. He shows you. Why read anything written from anyone who doesn't show you that they really put their own money to work with the methods that they write about? Many advice givers in this business have decided it's too embarrassing to show a loss - and that embarrassment would harm their business - so they show nothing. I'm sorry to say that in the past, I've done that too - but "Joe" was a significant influence on me changing that, and it has made a ton of difference for me personally. "Joe" has never done any trading that wasn't also simultaneously public. That counts for something substantial.

Second, in a world of books that tell you the same thing that you already learned a year ago in another place - this is refreshing. It's a personal story, but it's also a complete trading method. Granted, it's inspired from something he read and learned from another source - but it's original. It gives credit where credit is due, but then it breaks new ground. I built a small cottage with Strategy:10. "Joe" came along and built a skyscraper next door.

Dollar for dollar (and you know as well as I do how much trading books usualy cost), this is one of the most valuable books you can have in your trading collection. It's a no-brainer. Buy the book.

Reality Check - The Only Kind Banks Will Cash

Joe lays it on the line like no other currency or, for that matter, any other kind of trading book I've ever read. Joe strips down professional Forex trading to its two essential elements, either without which you will not be able to make money trading currencies, or for that matter in any field: (1) knowing what to do and (2) having the character to do it. Making money trading money is a profession no different from any other.

Joe first thoroughly, yet succinctly, explains his trading system, and get this, actually trades it - and here's the kicker to silence the skeptics - then publicly posts all of his raw results. You might have to re-read that a few times, and his compact book, before your critical faculties can assimilate the facts that your brain can otherwise easily handle. But, before you can dwell on accepting the speed with which Joe conveys his system, your attention is immediately swung 90 degrees into the realm of character building. If the first part of the book can be likened to building a winning race car, then you could metaphorically treat the second part of the book as building racing skills. Let's face it, in a real race, an untrained amateur will wrap a million dollar race car around a pole, while the professional racer will send the same car across the finish line. Joe openly discusses the oft-ignored or possibly avoided missing link to successful trading, or perhaps more generally, to success itself: it involves character building work. This entails establishing both technical mastery and then expending the effort it takes to develop a work regimen until you are able to implement your new-found academic knowledge of Five Bullets consistently in the real world. Joe's efforts spanned several years of system discovery, culminating in 9 months of transition during which he ramped up and engaged Five Bullets in ever more stressful stages of implementation, until finally attaining the confidence, discipline, and honesty to trade successfully in the real world. Honesty? You can't make money deluding yourself, bending the rules or giving in to greed or fear, and as I have mentioned at the outset, Joe publicly posts his results, to keep himself real and sober.

You need perspective, which the book lays out well along the way. Beating the professional million and billion dollar Forex traders employed by banks and other financial institutions and taking money away from them trading in the "pit" will require absorbing every sentence, word, and letter of Five Bullets, and implementing it - which will take work, or else deciding Forex is not for you. There is nothing wrong with either of these decisions. Only doing anything that falls in between them will amount to a waste of time and money.

If you decide to become a professional a trader, more than just teaching you Five Bullets, Joe teaches you how to become that "pit" professional and make money with his system. Joe's book goes beyond explaining a Forex trading system by also taking the unusual steps of trading and documenting it, and then distances itself from the rest by both explaining the commitment involved and how to acquire the professional demeanor to successfully implement the system. Factual, honest, real, practical, and profitable. Five Bullets. Five stars.

Take the good with the bad

The book is very short, although not very simple. It is a short term, quasi-scalping strategy. It is mostly centered on support/resistance reversals combined with stochastic divergence. Day trading is risky, and this strategy should not be used with real cash until you have back tested and forward tested it to "destruction." The method trades off of 1 minute charts, in the first few hours of the London open.

It is one of the cheaper books on the market, but there are some good insights in the book even if you choose to never trade the method. Personally, I do not think I will ever trade this method. I do not have 2-3 hours every afternoon to be on my computer waiting for all the right signals. He stresses knowing what you are doing before pulling the trigger, admitting that he never played with live cash before tested and perfecting his strategy for nine months before hand. This is a good lesson for new traders. Just because you don't make money in the first month on your demo account does not mean your methodology is flawed, perhaps just your execution of your strategy. He also stresses knowing yourself and your strengths/weaknesses so you can tailor this or any trade strategy for your liking. He does feel you could use this system all the way out to the one hour charts...again that is a lot of waiting, but possible in his estimation.

Joe stresses using money management, though after reading it and checking his website his rules seem a bit less hard and fast. Sometimes he will use a specific size and other times he will double, triple or quadruple it, it seems. I may be wrong here if I am reading his website wrong, but money management that doubles up or more to get back to even can be very dangerous. His stated goal is to walk away if he loses 1% in a day, at 0.2% risk per standard trade with a 10 pip stop loss. Profit taking is usually 15 pips, with a goal of 0.5% account gain per day.

This book reinforced to me the need to test and feel comfortable with your strategies before you ever pull the trigger in real life, and it also helped nail down the idea of stochastic divergences. Combining all the moving averages (1 EMA with 2 SMAs) and then Bollinger bands and stochastics makes for a demanding strategy. Focused individuals need only apply.

So, I give the book 3 stars because it has some good things: the price of book, reinforcement of preparation, ideas of retracements, knowing yourself and picking a strategy that fits your style, and explanation of divergences. These things are worth the price of the book and will help me in my overall trading. The less good things are the complexity of the strategy, the extensive amount of time it requires, the high level of stress involved, and lastly the ambiguity of the trade setups.
