Data Mining: The Textbook, by Charu C. Aggarwal

This textbook explores the different aspects of data mining from the fundamentals to the complex data types and their applications, capturing the wide diversity of problem domains for data mining issues. It goes beyond the traditional focus on data mining problems to introduce advanced data types such as text, time series, discrete sequences, spatial data, graph data, and social networks. Until now, no single book has addressed all these topics in a comprehensive and integrated way. The chapters of this book fall into one of three categories:

  • Fundamental chapters: Data mining has four main problems, which correspond to clustering, classification, association pattern mining, and outlier analysis. These chapters comprehensively discuss a wide variety of methods for these problems.
  • Domain chapters: These chapters discuss the specific methods used for different domains of data such as text data, time-series data, sequence data, graph data, and spatial data.
  • Application chapters: These chapters study important applications such as stream mining, Web mining, ranking, recommendations, social networks, and privacy preservation. The domain chapters also have an applied flavor.

Appropriate for both introductory and advanced data mining courses, Data Mining: The Textbook balances mathematical details and intuition. It contains the necessary mathematical details for professors and researchers, but it is presented in a simple and intuitive style to improve accessibility for students and industrial practitioners (including those with a limited mathematical background). Numerous illustrations, examples, and exercises are included, with an emphasis on semantically interpretable examples.

Praise for Data Mining: The Textbook -

“As I read through this book, I have already decided to use it in my classes.  This is a book written by an outstanding researcher who has made fundamental contributions to data mining, in a way that is both accessible and up to date.  The book is complete with theory and practical use cases.  It’s a must-have for students and professors alike!" -- Qiang Yang, Chair of Computer Science and Engineering at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

"This is the most amazing and comprehensive text book on data mining. It covers not only the fundamental problems, such as clustering, classification, outliers and frequent patterns, and different data types, including text, time series, sequences, spatial data and graphs, but also various applications, such as recommenders, Web, social network and privacy.  It is a great book for graduate students and researchers as well as practitioners." -- Philip S. Yu, UIC Distinguished Professor and Wexler Chair in Information Technology at University of Illinois at Chicago

Review

“Written by one of the most prodigious editors and authors in the data mining community, Data mining: the textbook is a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals and applications of data mining. The recent drive in industry and academic toward data science and more specifically “big data” makes any well-written book on this topic a welcome addition to the bookshelves of experienced and aspiring data scientists… The writing style is excellent and the author managed to provide sufficient mathematical background in terms of formal proofs and notations, in order to make it self-contained and scientifically appealing to more theory-oriented readers.Covering more than 20 chapters and 700 pages, Aggarwal provides a unique textbook and reference to data mining, which I recommend to every reader working on or learning about data mining.” (Radu State, ACM Computing Reviews #CR143869)

Complete coverage of data mining
By AKS
This book is a great resource on data mining. In the past, I found that these types of books are written either from a "data mining" perspective, or from a "machine learning" perspective. Data mining books frequently omit many basic machine learning methods such as linear, kernel, or logistic regression. However, machine learning books do not address basic data mining methods like association rules or outlier detection. This book finally provides about as complete coverage as one can hope to get from a single book. Two chapters are devoted to outlier detection. A remarkable and unusual feature is that methods for specific data types are covered in individually dedicated chapters. Even topic models are discussed, which are absent from information retrieval books.

Excellent breadth as well as depth
By Gabor
This is an excellent book both in depth and breadth of
the topics covered. It gives descriptions, analyses, and insights
about the most popular algorithms on various topics, and it covers
many more areas than most books. The book is well integrated across
the broad diversity of topics that are covered, and connections between
methods and topics are pointed out throughout the book. I wouldn't
agree with an earlier review that the descriptions are short or
introductory. For most of the important topics, a lot of detail is
provided in terms of algorithm description and pseudo-code.
In some cases, interesting analyses are also provided. For instance,
in the case of frequent pattern mining algorithms,
not only are more algorithms discussed
than most of the other books, but a discussion of multiple choices
of data structures for the same algorithm is provided,
along with their relative trade-offs. The relationships among various
algorithms are also discussed. I have seen quite a
few textbooks on data mining, and I have not seen anything close to this
level of detail in any of the other books. Overall, my impression is
that the author has done an excellent job of calibrating detail level
to topic importance. Therefore, it can serve both as a textbook and
as a reference book. On the other hand, this is certainly
not an implementation or programming-centric book. The book is good at
teaching principles and concepts.

Data mining as a science
By Aran Joseph Canes
As far as I know, this is the first book to try to systematize data mining into a science. Dr. Aggarwal does a good job of relating the different parts of data mining to one another so that one can see data mining as a discipline and not simply various techniques. One caveat, as somebody who makes a living by data mining, I can say that this text is more appropriate for academia than real analytic work. Practitioners with experience in data mining can understand the theoretical parts of data analysis better and undergraduate and graduate students can benefit from this theoretical perspective, but readers looking for an introduction to data mining in a real world setting should choose a different text.

Good for a second course of study only
By Ernie Alcott
For a true beginner this course is not truly user-friendly. I have been to Viet Nam and was married to a native in Ho Chi Minh City. This series did nothing to prepare me to communicate in the language. The tonal system is not explained, practiced, or heard in the attempts given. Vietnamese without true tonal understanding is unintelligible. The audio version leaps into full conversation with little to no preparation. It was necessary to take another course in a classroom type setting to understand what this series was trying to get across. The book is fine, but one would need a native speaker to record the lessons in lieu of the audio portion.

Excellent Tool for Someone Serious about Learning Vietnamese
By A Customer
I disagree with an earlier posted negative review of this material. I feel that this book and 2 CD set is excellent. I have searched for many books to help me learn to communicate with my wife's family in Vietnamese in my annual visit to Vietnam. This is by far the most useful. This material is not designed for the traveller who wants to learn a phrase or two. It is designed for someone who truly wishes to learn to communicate in Vietnamese. The book and CD force you to think and learn to listen in order to comprehend real conversational Vietnamese. In real life, Vietnamese people speak quickly. One will never learn to listen and speak this language unless you are given a strong push. That is what this material does. This book and CD set will make you work harder, but in the end will give you practical speaking and listening abilities. Expect to make a serious time investment in learning this language. As an additional comment, except for a fortunate few, learning any language likely requires real life experience coupled with this material. The material teaches terms and grammar from the north. This is the official version of the language of the country and is understood everywhere.

Tapes aren't that bad
By A Customer
I should start off by saying that I already spoke Vietnamese pretty well when I picked up this course. In general, I thought the book was a pretty good introductory text (a fair amount of typos in the first half dozen chapters though).
The one comment I did want to make was on the tapes. The hardest thing about learning Vietnamese is (by far) pronunciation. Some of the earlier reviewers complained about the tapes and I think that their complaints are somewhat unjustified. It took me (literally) years to be comfortable hearing and understanding Vietnamese -- it's not quite like learning Spanish. If the expectation was that the neophite could listen to these tapes (or any VNese tapes) in the car and start picking up words, then yes, these tapes (and any tapes) are going to be disappointing. On the other hand, the tapes follow the printed material very well, are professionally produced, and use speakers with good pronunciation.
I guess my point here is that you really need to be prepared to spend a fairly considerable amount of time if you want to hear and speak VNese well. If the previous reviewers didn't find these tapes useful, I suspect there are no sets of tapes (or any other audio aids) out there that would meet their expectations.

Electronic for Dummies is Excellent
By STG
Electronics for Dummies is a wonderful book for people interested in understanding and considering getting into the field of electronic component repair (not computers, but repairing components such as radios, stereos, amps, etc.).

Unlike college text books (which I have recently used), it is not dependent on math, then more math. You can get through most of the book before having to fool with math, with most math being basic algebra. For basic component repair and hobby's, you'll rarely use math, so that is where this book excels.

The book teaches the reader about the individual components and how to identify them, what they do individually and how they work in conjunction with other components in a circuit, learning schematic and schematic symbols, using multimeters and other testing equipment. Again, this is what most of us want and need, not tons of math that would be needed if you were considering an "electrical design" path, but not needed otherwise.

Again, I recommend this book for anyone that is flirting with a career path or retirement income towards "electronic component repair" or just wanting to better understand how the components work.

A gentle introduction to electronics for "newbies"
By TERENCE G CRAIG
If you don't know anything about electronics and want a well-witten introduction, this book would be a good choice. It describes both analog and digital electronics in clear prose with the typical light humor that is the tradition of the "Dummies" books. There are some helpful illustrations that show how charges flow in a circuit and how they accumulate in a capacitor and how they work in a semiconductor. It covers the simple algebraic math of Ohm's and Kirchoff's Laws as well as capacitive and inductive reactance and impedance. It describes some of the most common analog and digital integrated circuits and how they can be used in creating various kinds of circuits. It introduces schematic symbols from the beginning and later devotes an entire chapter to understanding circuit diagrams. There are sections on safety, basic manual skills such as soldering, and where to purchase parts and tools as well as some online resources for learning more. Finally, it has some simple projects you can make, although I didn't think that this was the strongest part of the book.

I bought this for my granddaughter to provide the theory to go along with the practical experience of building simple circuits with the Snap Circuits kit. It seemed the best of the introductory texts I reviewed for this purpose.

Very Well Done
By Rick Cook
This is one of the better basic electronics books out there, in part because it is so basic. The author starts with electrons and goes from there in simple, non-technical language to introduce you to how the things around us work, Although the work starts at a very basic level, it builds through computers, control systems and schematics, grounding the reader carefully all the way. The treatment is about as non-mathematical as you can get when talking about electronics. It is also primarily not a project book. Just a clear explanation. A very good book to get you started in electronics.

Doing Data Science: Straight Talk from the Frontline, by Cathy O'Neil, Rachel Schutt

Now that people are aware that data can make the difference in an election or a business model, data science as an occupation is gaining ground. But how can you get started working in a wide-ranging, interdisciplinary field that’s so clouded in hype? This insightful book, based on Columbia University’s Introduction to Data Science class, tells you what you need to know.

In many of these chapter-long lectures, data scientists from companies such as Google, Microsoft, and eBay share new algorithms, methods, and models by presenting case studies and the code they use. If you’re familiar with linear algebra, probability, and statistics, and have programming experience, this book is an ideal introduction to data science.

Topics include:

  • Statistical inference, exploratory data analysis, and the data science process
  • Algorithms
  • Spam filters, Naive Bayes, and data wrangling
  • Logistic regression
  • Financial modeling
  • Recommendation engines and causality
  • Data visualization
  • Social networks and data journalism
  • Data engineering, MapReduce, Pregel, and Hadoop

Doing Data Science is collaboration between course instructor Rachel Schutt, Senior VP of Data Science at News Corp, and data science consultant Cathy O’Neil, a senior data scientist at Johnson Research Labs, who attended and blogged about the course.

More breadth than depth

Book review - Doing Data Science by O'Neil and Schutt, O'Reilly Media.

More breadth than depth

What is data science? The book Doing Data Science not only explains what data science is but also provides a broad overview of methods and techniques that one must master in order to call one self a data scientist. The book is based on a course about data science given at Columbia University. However it is not to be considered as a text book about data science but more as a broad introduction to a number of topics in data science.

In the spring of 2013 I followed two Coursera courses. One about the statistical programming language R and one on Data Analysis. I had for some time been looking for a book that could be used as a follow-up reading on topics in data science. This was the reason I picked up "Doing Data Science".

The book begins with a chapter about what data science is all about is followed by four chapters on topics like statistical inference, explanatory data analysis, various machine learning algorithms, linear and logistic regression, and Naive Bayes. I have a background in both mathematics and statistics and I was able to understand these chapters but the material is covered in such broad terms that I find it hard to believe that a newcomer to this topics will understand or gain much knowledge from reading these chapters. Basic math is presented about the models but without some kind of detailed explanation one cannot develop any deeper intuition for the approach explained.

The best parts of the book is definitely chapter 6 to 8 and 10. In here we find interesting discussion about coverage of data science applied to financial modeling, extracting information from data, and social networks. I really enjoyed the examination of time stamped data, the Kaggle Model, feature selection, and case-attribute data versus social network data. The math behind these topics was however once again explained quite superficial. Centrality measures is central to social network analysis but it is very hard to develop intuition for there measures without a more detailed explanation about the underlying math. These chapters contains lots of useful resources for finding additional information about the discussed topics.

Data visualization is an integral part of data science for communication results. Beginners in the field of data science needs concrete and easy to follow instruction on how to get started with visualization. Unfortunately the book focuses more on the use of data visualization in modern art projects. The content is simply to abstract for beginners to learn about the usage of visualization in data science.

When I was browsing the book before actual buying it I was kind thrilled to see that it covered topics like causality and epidemiology. Topics that I did not found covered in any other book about data science. However the chapter about epidemiology is not about using data science in epidemiology but 'just' about using data science to evaluate the methods used in epidemiology. Likewise there seems to be no link between data science and causality. I later discovered that the authors used an entire blog post ([...] to explain why causality was part of the university course underlying the book. This material or parts of it should have made it into the book. I am still not convinced that causality is a topic in data science.

There are several examples in which the book assumes the reader to have knowledge of US government structure and organizations. Examples include page 292 when discussing US health care databases and page 298 where FDA is mentioned without further introduction or explanation about what FDA is.

A book than contains programming examples should always make the code accessible to download. Typing in the code yourself is simply waste of time. It is possible to download some of the datasets used in the book through GitHub. But the code does not seem to be available. I also own the electronic version of the book and I tried to copy-paste some of the examples from the e-book but there are several examples of code that hasn't been proof written or tested prior to publication. The sample code misses references to required R libraries or refers to computer folder structures on some local Columbia University computer. The companion datasets that can be downloaded on GitHub consists of a number of Excel files. The R sample code uses the gdata package to load these Excel files into R for further analysis. It took be quite some time to figure out why this process didn't work on a Windows computer. The gdata package requires Perl to be installed on the computer and this is not default software on Windows. In my opinion one should always publish data in a simple format, e.g. csv files and definitely not proprietary formats like xls for Excel files.

Data Science is both science and a lot of practical experience. I guess the title of the book Doing Data Science tries to capture that. You need to do data science in order to learn it. The covered topics are interesting but the material is more breadth than depth. Luckily there are lots of useful links and resources to additional materials. Personally I would prefer more details about the actual data science topics like e.g. extracting meaning from data and social network analysis and less focus on math. The book already requires some knowledge of math, statistics and programming, so why not presume that the reader has the background knowledge and dive straight into the data science discussions.

I really like the idea about having a lot of different people present various topics in data science and the book is well written and contains lots of useful resources for further studies of data science. I will recommend to book to people new to the subject but be aware of the fact that source code is not available and that is a major drawback.

Doing Data Science Worth a Look
By Dan D. Gutierrez
I found this book to be a very odd bird indeed. It is one book you can read from back cover to front cover and not be at a disadvantage. This is because the book is really just a collection of presentations made by various people to a class taught by the primary author Rachel Schutt at Columbia University in the Fall of 2012 – Introduction to Data Science. It wasn’t entirely clear what content Schutt was directly responsible for since only some of the chapters indicate who the contributors were (one of the chapters was contributed by a group of her students!). The co-author, Cathy O’Neil, I’ve encountered before as an outspoken blogger going by the name “mathbabe” but it wasn’t specifically stated how she became part of the book project, other than to say she was one of the students in Schutt’s class. Chapter 6 was partly written by O’Neil.

Both Schutt and O’Neil are Ph.D.s data science appropriate fields, but the book was not “written” by the two, rather they seemed to have performed some kind of editing function with the materials submitted by each contributor and added commentaries of their own. As a result, the book is a hodgepodge of anecdotes, factoids, R code snippets, plots, and mathematics, all from the in-class presentations. I enjoy seeing math in data science books, but the equations in this book were sort of just floating there requiring the reader to explore further at another time.

Although I have issues with the book as it is not any sort of text for the field, I did enjoy reading it with a number of “Ah, I didn’t know that!” moments. Schutt’s credentials in data science are considerable, having worked at Google for a few years around the same time that “data science” was growing up in Silicon Valley. As a result the book has many memorable anecdotes about the early days of the data science industry, and observations about what makes big data tick. I enjoyed the story about the Google software engineer who accidentally deleted 10 petabytes of data, and I think my favorite quote from the book is from the student’s chapter 15:

Kaggle competitions could be described as the dick-measuring contests of data science.

With contributor’s chapters on statistical inference, machine learning algorithms, logistic regression, financial modeling, recommendation engines, data visualization, Hadoop, MapReduce, and more, I’d say the book is worth a read, but not necessarily as a source of learning data science but more as a high-level guide and short historical account of this young industry. You get to learn about the people, companies, technologies that have collectively built the data science arena and you’ll be better for it especially if you are working to become a data scientist yourself.

A spoonful of sugar...
By Dimitri Shvorob
... helps the medicine go down, as Mary Poppins used to say. An IT-focused publisher, O'Reilly has twice before used the "book as collection of chapters by different contributors" formula in its foray into the attractive "data" niche, with such titles as "Beautiful data" and "Bad data". "Doing data science" - by the way, I prefer Hastie and Tibshirani's "statistical learning" to the fuzzy and grandiose "data science" - follows the same approach, but, with its subject matter being closer to the academe, the company enlisted two young PhDs to steer the collaborative effort. Rachel Schutt took the lead as author and editor, and, assisted by Cathy O'Neil, produced an engaging, informal - you don't often see "science" in the title and "huge-ass" in the text - yet sufficiently technical to be hands-on, sequence-of-vignettes-styled book. Imagine a mash-up of a magazine article and a textbook. Neither part may be best-in-class, but their combination makes for a "unique selling proposition".

Well, maybe not a textbook. Most textbooks are carefully written and carefully checked. In contrast, when I see "Doing data science" introduce the ROC curve in three places, one of which translates the "O" as "operator", I can guess that this is a copy-paste of papers by three contributors. When Dr. O'Neil casually redefines an English word ("causal") to avoid rewriting a couple of sentences, or pronounces, on page 159, that "priors reduce degrees of freedom" - this is painfully meaningless, and neither term is defined, only name-checked - I suspect that she knows better, but just did not feel like spending more time on her half-chapter. Neither author speaks of their own projects - if this is the "frontline", then it's other soldiers' "trenches" that we are visiting. The occasional code listings are borrowed as well, thrown in without editing or comments. In this last regard, "Doing data science" lags far behind the book that seems to have informed its choice of topics, Peter Harrington's "Machine learning in action". (That's one suggestion - and if you want a good, accessible textbook, "Introduction to statistical learning" by James et al. is another).

None of it is going to matter to the book's target audience. "Doing data science" is aimed at beginners - and is bound to be interesting and useful to thousands of keen undergrads and adult learners.

Masters of the Living Energy: The Mystical World of the Q'ero of Peru, by Joan Parisi Wilcox

An intimate glimpse into the world of ancient Peruvian spiritual practice and cosmology

• Reveals the mysteries of the world of living energy (kawsay pacha) through intensive in-depth interviews with six Q’ero mystics

• Explores the energetics, spirits, tools, and practices of Andean mysticism--the real story behind the fictionalized accounts in The Celestine Prophecy

Known as the “keepers of the ancient knowledge,” the Q’ero Indians of Peru are the most respected mystics of the south-central Andes. In 1996 Joan Parisi Wilcox traveled to the Andes and was able to record the mysteries of kawsay pacha, the multidimensional world of living energy, through more than 40 hours of intensive interviews with six Q’ero paqos, masters of the ancient spiritual traditions of Peru.

The Q’ero are known for having preserved the Inca spiritual tradition more purely than any other indigenous population in the Andes. The in-depth interviews presented in this book recount the direct words of these masters so readers can discover for themselves the mind and heart space of these people. Four new chapters of this revised edition focus on the work of the mesa, the Andean form of a spiritual medicine bundle, and its use as a conduit for the healing energies of nature. The mesa is called the “heart’s fire” because it represents the finest energy--the energy of compassion--that a paqo cultivates while walking the sacred path. Wilcox provides instructions on how to make, activate, and work with a mesa, as well as other practical exercises showing how we can use the power of the Andean spiritual tradition in our own lives.

Review
"You will bring the word of the Q'ero to the world." (Don Mariano Apasa Marchaqa, Q'ero Master, speaking to the author)

" . . . a really fabulous book! . . . if you have any interest in the 'Mystical Q'ero' (who had been thought of only as 'legends' before their re-appearce in the late 50's!), this is probably the most legitimate over-view that's out there . . . highly recommended!" (BTripp, LiVE JOURNAL, April 2009)

"A treasury of shamanic knowledge and practices whose insights into an ancient wisdom can help those of us living in a modern society find attunement with nature and harmony within ourselves." (Kenneth Meadows, author of Shamanic Experience)

"The Q’ero have preserved a path for which many in the modern world hunger and thirst--how to participate in a world of living energies." (William Sullivan, author of The Secret of the Incas)

"Treats the beliefs and religion of the Quechua people with profound feeling and a deep identification seldom seen." (Jorge A. Flores Ochoa, professor of anthropology, National University of Cuzco, Peru)

"Joan Parisi Wilcox has given us a mature and sensitive portrait of a mystical system as seen through the eyes of its practitioners, the Q'ero. Written with heart and respect, this book is a gateway for serious seekers to discover the world of living energy and to learn how to live in harmony with nature and each other." (Deepak Chopra, author of The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success)

Written word about Living Energy - with life in the words
By Jeffrey Backstrom
"Masters of the Living Energy": Joan Parisi Wilcox aptly titles her book, honoring the Andean teachers -- several Q'ero elders, mestizo paqo Americo Yabar, anthropologist Juan Nunez Del Prado, and young paqo Puma Quispe -- who are interviewed in this pioneering work, which brings elements of the indigenous cosmology of the region to those English speakers who are taking a serious interest in it. The result is not a well-defined, clear-cut, organized system. This is good. The understandings and practices of the native peoples of the Andes do not constitute a body of doctrine. There is no counsel to rule on what is approved and what is heretical.

There is though an underlying ground of experience and shared awareness, which is revealed. The book is a little bit raw. I love that Wilcox has resisted the temptation to cook it too well. As we read the accounts of a variety of elders, investigators, teachers, we're let in on the messiness of coming into a culture not our own; our minds, being jostled about by the unfamiliar details, are left to ponder the real quarry: this field of "living energy" (Kausay, in the Quechua language). The indigenous "spirituality" (our concept) does not constitute a religion. There isn't a holy book, a clergy, or other means of authority. There isn't a bureaucratic structure between man and godhead, to grant favors or levy punishment, earthly or in the afterlife. What we glimpse instead is an archaic, pre-"civil"-ized, before city, before stratification, form of awareness. Each individual in connection (munay), balance, with the elements of nature, with others in the human family, and with and within the field of energy that constitutes itself into what we experience in this everyday world as well as in non-ordinary realms.

As it turns out, although these realms, which the conventional mindset of our modern culture would classify as superstition, are not described in an objectively identical way across cultures, there do turn out to be interesting parallels among indigenous peoples around the globe. And similarly, the diverging but overlapping prescriptions of elements of the Andean experience, as chronicled by Wilcox, leave us an impression, a feeling for the experiences that these teachers share. Opening a variety of doors, and peeking behind them ... such investigation is suggestive of the methodology of awakening that indigenous shamans - journeyers, travelers, dreamers - undertake. And while reading a book about such experiences is exactly not the same as having them, since mental investigation is the tool at hand for many of us, we're invited to engage that tool and see if some of this speaks to a part of us we've been missing.

For those readers already somewhat familiar, there is much to ponder here, on topics like the mesa, Andean initiations, energetic healing practices, and ways to move the kausay using one's own field.

A Book of Integrity - Reviewed by John M. Weiskopf
By Kindle Customer
Over the last half of the 20th Century, alternative religions and spiritual practices have found increasing numbers of followers in Europe and North America. The practices of Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, Meditation and Yoga have spread rapidly giving millions of people, who were once socialized in a more traditional Christian or Judaic philosophy, a new way to "connect" to the spiritual, find answers within themselves, and ultimately find meaning in today's world. Some people, whose religious philosophy and practice were rooted in European based religions, even found a preferred spiritual expression in the Native American traditions of the medicine wheel, spirit guides, ceremonial rituals, and dream prophecy.

However, this religious force has moved predominately from the East to the West. It has been only in the last few years that there has been a growing interest in spiritual healing and shamanic practices from below the equator, namely from the Amazon and the villages of the Andes in South America.

In her exceptional book Masters of the Living Energy, Joan Parisi Wilcox captures the ancient and sacred traditions of the Andes, namely the mystical world of the Q'ero of Peru. Of all of the Andean communities, the Q'ero Inca seemed to have been singled out to be, what Wilcox calls "the keepers of the ancient knowledge." What is extraordinary about her book is, by writing this book in a purist and painstaking way, that she too has become a keeper of this ancient knowledge. Through dozens of persistent and careful interviews with the most powerful Q'ero shaman, she has preserved not just the core of the Q'ero healing practices, but every detail of their rituals, the hierarchy of Q'ero paqos (shaman), the comprehensive energy body, the levels of Apus, the meaning and gift of the mesa, the despacho, and a comprehensive semantic which explains the intricate architecture of the Q'ero's spiritual cosmological system.

Masters of the Living Energy is a work of enormous integrity. You feel it on every page. The glossary in the back of the book emphasizes the meticulous detail and discipline of the Q'ero mystic ideology. The traditions of the Q'ero have been passed down by word-of-mouth for centuries from generation to generation. No book, no written record, has recorded this ancient oral tradition so well. The pure ancient Q'ero traditions have been unspoiled in the modern world's search for quick spiritual meaning in the name of healing, unlike offshoots of pure Buddhism, Yoga, and other spiritual practices, which have become popularized to appeal to a more universal following. Joan Parisi Wilcox has recorded the authenticity and complex sacred traditions of the Q'ero Inca. To her enormous credit, she has captured the Q'ero as they were centuries ago and as they struggle to remain.

Coco Chanel, without question probably the most famous fashion designer of all time, was named by Time magazine one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century. Her life was filled with trauma, romance, intrigue, and scandal, but her business acumen and groundbreaking talent (along with funding by her paramours) took her far beyond her humble beginnings. Chanel understood how to get what she wanted from life and never hesitated to pursue the grandest of visions. Her designs broke numerous barriers, and her influence on style and aesthetic forever changed the world, especially for women. Women’s liberation took a major step forward when Chanel made it acceptable and stylish for women to throw away their corsets and pull on pants! Moving beyond tangible style to the intangible, Chanel broke new ground when she introduced her own scent, N5. She was the first designer to do so. Today most fashion houses have their own fragrance line, but it was Chanel who started the trend. This was but one of many trends—now considered classics—that were born of Chanel’s brilliant design mien: ropes of pearls, cardigans, jewelry cuffs, slinky jersey fabric, and more. Vive la Chanel!

Science Wars: Politics, Gender, and Race: 0, by Anthony Walsh

Few issues cause academics to disagree more than gender and race, especially when topics are addressed in terms of biological differences. To conduct research in these areas or comment favorably on research can subject one to scorn.

When these topics are addressed, they generally take the form of philosophical debates. Anthony Walsh focuses upon such debates and supporting research. He divides parties into biologists and social constructionists, arguing that biologists remain focused on laboratory work, while constructionists are acutely aware of the impact of biologists in contested territories.

Science Wars introduces the ideas motivating the parties and examines social constructionism and its issues with science. He explores arguments over conceptual tools scientists love and constructionists abhor, and he provides a solid discussion of the co-evolution of genes and culture. Walsh then focuses his attention on gender, how constructionists view it, and the neuroscience explanation of gender differences. Moving to race, Walsh looks at how some have tried to bury the concept of race, while others emphasize it. He considers definitions of race—essentialist, taxonomic, population, and lineage—as they have evolved from the time of the Enlightenment to the present. And finally, he attempts to bring the opposing sides together by pointing out what each can bring to a meaningful discussion.

Review

“Science Wars: Politics, Gender, and Race documents the conflict being fought in scientific circles between those who want science to be linked to political agendas and others who believe that science should be an independent, uncontrolled discipline. Much of what passes for scientific 'facts' and debate is in fact controlled more by political perspective than authentic bipartisan scientific investigation, and Science Wars documents this process, explaining how science becomes corrupted and what must be done to clarify intellectual pursuits. The result is a pick for scientists, academics and students alike, and draws important connections between scientific perspective and political agendas that lead to misinterpretations and popular fallacies.”

—California Bookwatch

“Science Wars documents the real war being waged in science—the war between those who want to make science subservient to their political goals, and those who still believe that science should be coldly objective.Walsh covers the varied ways that intellectual brilliance has made honesty a secondary concern or, worst yet, no concern at all.

“Few academics are as honest as Anthony Walsh.Unconcerned with matters of political correctness, Walsh describes in vivid detail the academic controversies that swirl around matters of sex and race. You will find no clearer explanation about these debates, and you will find no more honest account.

“Walsh has done in Science Wars what few other scholars would dare to do: he has revealed the uncomfortable truth that much of what passes for academic debate is, today, infected with political ideology. The political left loves to proclaim how conservatives deny science. In Science Wars, Walsh shows an uncomfortable reality—that the left has done much more to corrupt science than the right could ever do.”

—John Wright, professor, School of Criminal Justice, University of Cincinnati
