Theft by Finding: Diaries (1977-2002), by David Sedaris

One of the most anticipated books of 2017: Boston Globe, New York Times Book Review, New York's "Vulture", The Week, Bustle, BookRiot

David Sedaris tells all in a book that is, literally, a lifetime in the making

It's no coincidence that the world's best writers tend to keep diaries. If you faithfully record your life in a journal, you're writing every day-and if you write every day, you become a better writer. David Sedaris has kept a diary for forty years. This means that if you've kept a diary for a year of your life or less, Sedaris is at least forty times better at writing than you are.

In his diaries, he's recorded everything that has captured his attention-overheard comments, salacious gossip, soap opera plot twists, secrets confided by total strangers. These observations are the source code for his finest work, and with them he has honed his self-deprecation and learned to craft his cunning, surprising sentences.

Now, for the first time, Sedaris shares his private writings with the world in Theft By Finding: Diaries 1977-2002. This is the first-person account of how a drug-abusing dropout with a weakness for the International House of Pancakes and a chronic inability to hold down a real job became one of the funniest people on the planet.

Most diaries - even the diaries of great writers - are impossibly dull, because they generally write about their emotions, or their dreams, or their interior life. Sedaris's diaries are unique because they face outward. He doesn't tell us his feelings about the world, he shows us the world instead, and in so doing he shows us something deeper about himself.

Written with a sharp eye and ear for the bizarre, the beautiful, and the uncomfortable, and with a generosity of spirit that even a misanthropic sense of humor can't fully disguise, Theft By Finding proves that Sedaris is one of our great modern observers. It's a potent reminder that there's no such thing as a boring day-when you're as perceptive and curious as Sedaris, adventure waits around every corner.

Review
PRAISE FOR THEFT BY FINDING:

"The thrill of Sedaris's nonfiction lies in the absurd details of his memories, burnished with enough polish and comic timing to wonder how true they are (after you've stopped laughing). Now we'll finally have access to the raw material - fragments of the writer's personal diaries that you might recognize from the banter in his prolific and hilarious live readings."
―Boris Kachka, New York

"For those curious about the mind of a comic genius, this is a great place to start."
―Melissa Kravitz, amNewYork

"A David Sedaris book is always a welcome addition to any personal library - his hilarity, his self-deprecation, his compassion for (and amusement with) the human condition, and his clear joy at making his readers laugh out loud are all what make a David Sedaris book great."―E. Ce Miller, Bustle

"An illuminating autobiographical journey through decades' worth of his diaries."―Harper's Bazaar

"Raw glimpses of the humorist's personal life as he clambered from starving artist to household name... though the mood is usually light, the book is also a more serious look into his travails as an artist and person... A surprisingly poignant portrait of the artist as a young to middle-aged man."
―Kirkus (starred review)

"Sedaris fans will thrill to this opportunity to poke around in the writer's personal diaries, which he has faithfully kept for four decades and used as raw material for his hilarious nonfiction as well as his performances."
―Paul S. Makishima, Boston Globe

A Primer on the Future of PR, Marketingand Advertising

A new generation of megabrands like Facebook, Dropbox, Airbnb, and Twitter haven’t spent a dime on traditional marketing. No press releases, no TV commercials, no billboards. Instead, they rely on a new strategy—growth hacking—to reach many more people despite modest marketing budgets. Growth hackers have thrown out the old playbook and replaced it with tools that are testable, trackable, and scalable. They believe that products and businesses should be modified repeatedly until they’re primed to generate explosive reactions.

Bestselling author Ryan Holiday, the acclaimed marketing guru for American Apparel and many bestselling authors and multiplatinum musicians, explains the new rules and provides valuable examples and case studies for aspiring growth hackers. Whether you work for a tiny start-up or a Fortune 500 giant, if you’re responsible for building awareness and buzz for a product or service, this is your road map.

AN INTRODUCTION TO GROWTH HACKING

Nearly two years ago now, on what seemed like a normal day, I got in my car to leave my house, assuming it would be no different from any other workday. I had read the morning news, dealt with a few important employee issues over the phone, and confirmed lunch and drinks meetings for later in the day. I headed to the athletic club—a swanky, century-old private gym favored by downtown executives—and swam and ran and then sat in the steam room to think.

As I entered the office around ten, I nodded to my assistant and sat down at a big desk and reviewed all the papers that required my signature. There were ad designs to approve, invoices to process, events to sponsor, proposals to review. A new product was launching, and I had a press release to write. A stack of magazines had arrived—I handed them to an employee to catalog and organize for the press library.

My job: director of marketing at American Apparel. I had a half dozen employees working under me in my office. Right across the hall from us, thousands of sewing machines were humming away, manned by the world’s most efficient garment workers. A few doors down was a photo studio where the very ads I would be placing were made.

Excepting the help of a few pieces of technology, like my computer and smartphone, my day had begun and would proceed exactly as it had for every other marketing executive for the last seventy-five years. Buy advertisements, plan events, pitch reporters, design “creatives,” approve promotions, and throw around terms like “brand,” “CPM,” “awareness,” “earned media,” “top of mind,” “added value,” and “share of voice.” That was the job; that’s always been the job.

I’m not saying I’m Don Draper or Edward Bernays or anything, but the three of us could probably have swapped offices and routines with only a few adjustments. And I, along with everyone else in the business, found that to be pretty damn cool.

But that seemingly ordinary day was disrupted by an article. The headline stood out clearly amid the online noise, as though it had been lobbed directly at me: “Growth Hacker Is the New VP [of] Marketing.”

What?

I was a VP of marketing. I quite liked my job. I was good at it, too. Self-taught, self-made, I was, at twenty-five, helping to lead the efforts of a publicly traded company with 250 stores in twenty countries and more than $600 million in revenue.

But the writer, Andrew Chen, an influential technologist and entrepreneur, didn’t care about any of that. According to him, my colleagues and I would soon be out of a job—someone was waiting in the wings to replace us.

The new job title of “Growth Hacker” is integrating itself into Silicon Valley’s culture, emphasizing that coding and technical chops are now an essential part of being a great marketer. Growth hackers are a hybrid of marketer and coder, one who looks at the traditional question of “How do I get customers for my product?” and answers with A/B tests, landing pages, viral factor, email deliverability, and Open Graph....

The entire marketing team is being disrupted. Rather than a VP of Marketing with a bunch of non-technical marketers reporting to them, instead growth hackers are engineers leading teams of engineers.1

What the hell is a growth hacker? I thought. How could an engineer ever do my job?

But then I added up the combined valuation of the few companies Chen mentioned as case studies—companies that had barely existed a few years ago.

•Dropbox
•Zynga
•Groupon
•Instagram
•Pinterest

Now worth billions and billions of dollars.

As Micah Baldwin, founder of Graphicly and a start-up mentor at Techstars and 500 Startups, explains, “In the absence of big budgets, start-ups learned how to hack the system to build their companies.”2 Their hacking—which occurred right on my watch—had rethought marketing from the ground up, with none of the baggage or old assumptions. And now, their shortcuts, innovations, and backdoor solutions fly in the face of everything we’ve been taught.

We all want to do more with less. For marketers and entrepreneurs, that paradox is practically our job description. Well, in this book, we’re going to look at how growth hackers have helped companies like Dropbox, Mailbox, Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, Snapchat, Evernote, Instagram, Mint.com, AppSumo, and StumbleUpon do so much with essentially nothing.

What stunned me most about those companies was that none of them were built with any of the skills that traditional marketers like myself had always considered special, and most were built without the resources I’d long considered essential. I couldn’t name the “marketer”—and definitely not the agency—responsible for their success because there wasn’t one. Growth hacking had made “marketing” irrelevant, or at the very least it had completely rewritten its best practices.

Whether you’re currently a marketing executive or a college grad about to enter the field—the first growth hackers have pioneered a new way. Some of their strategies are incredibly technical and complex. The strategies also change constantly; in fact, occasionally it might work only one time. This book is short because it sticks with the timeless parts. I also won’t weigh you down with heavy concepts like “cohort analysis” and “viral coefficients.”* Instead, we will focus on the mindset—it’s far and away the most important part.

I start and end with my own experiences in this book, not because I am anyone special but because I think they illustrate a microcosm of the industry itself. The old way—where product development and marketing were two distinct and separate processes—has been replaced. We all find ourselves in the same position: needing to do more with less and finding, increasingly, that the old strategies no longer generate results.

So in this book, I am going to take you through a new cycle, a much more fluid and iterative process. A growth hacker doesn’t see marketing as something one does but rather as something one builds into the product itself. The product is then kick-started, shared, and optimized (with these steps repeated multiple times) on its way to massive and rapid growth. The chapters of this book follow that structure.

that anyone who claims to be any of those things would find it to be remedial at best. These are tired stories
By Seamus James
Holiday lays out very clearly at the beginning of the book this premise: that a growth hacker is an engineer, designer, and marketer rolled into one. Unfortunately, this book is so non-technical and high-level, that anyone who claims to be any of those things would find it to be remedial at best.

These are tired stories, found in almost all strategic literature for the tech entrepreneur. Dropbox's video. Facebook's college strategy. Hotmail's email tagline. If you've read any other books about the brilliant moves made by tech's biggest players, you've already heard them.

Contrast this book with Nir Eyal's brilliant and actionable book, Hooked. Eyal tells many of the same stories, but takes a rigorous academic approach to analyzing why these strategies worked, not just what they were. Why did the email tagline work for hotmail? Because it increased their viral coefficient and dropped their viral cycle time to practically minutes. If you want information like that, don't look to this book.

I'm giving it two stars instead of one because I could see this as a very broad overview of what the phrase growth hacking means, but as a strategy guide or a methodology, it fails completely.

Welcome to a New World of Marketing!
By Steven Woloszyk
Ryan Holiday tells us that that glamorous advertising days of Don Draper are over in this book on Growth Hacker Marketing.

He tells us that the days of multi-million dollar advertising campaigns on billboards, television, and radio are numbered. They are being replaced with social media campaigns, funnels, giveaways, and ways of creating "virality" to promote products.

The book tells us that advertising, promotion, and marketing isn't one major campaign for a product launch, but rather an on-going process that tested, refined, and improved upon. He says we need to start with a "minimum viable product," and through this testing find a "product market fit."

The book gives us insight on new marketing terms such as stickiness, A/B testing, bootstrapping, bounce rate, cohort analysis, sales funnels, and of course growth hacking, amongst others.

The book started as a short blog, turned into an article for a website, then into an e-book, and eventually into this final form, a short 111 page book where Ryan tested his theories with this release.

There's no doubt we're seeing a major "shift" or "pivot" with marketing, advertising, and PR today with the growth of social media where everything can be done right from our smart phones.

I enjoyed this simple book for the introduction to these concepts but it really doesn't give much in terms of practical tools. It's more just an overview of the technology and provides some background. The book does offer the reader several options for learning more via recommended books, blogs, presentations, classes, shows, and conferences.

Overall, I enjoyed the book but likely would've been satisfied with the original form of a blog as I think it was a bit of a stretch to turn this into an actual book. Still, a good starting point for anyone looking to learn more about the basics of promoting a new product in today's digital world.

An Excellent Investment -- Would Buy Again
By Andrew Galli
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Used it as a platform for understanding how "young people and the folks who invest in them think".

The author has created not only a book about boot-strapping marketing but he does it as a former large budget veteran of traditional marketing (American Apparel). So his perspective is from someone who 'was there' and is now 'over here'.

Took a lot of notes. Came up with some really innovative ways to use his teachings. I can't say more than that, can I? An excellent investment, would buy again.

Rope Opera: How WCW Killed Vince Russo, by Vince Russo

It’s been a decade since The Monday Night War waged between the WWF and WCW generated unprecedented and astronomical ratings, and the landscape of “the sport of kings” has changed radically. But one thing remains constant: the fans chanting “Fire Russo!” can still be heard at TV tapings and pay-per-view events across North America. And Vince Russo, the man who has at times been called “the most hated man in professional wrestling” wouldn’t have it any other way. In his first book, Forgiven, Vince Russo delivered a modern-day parable about the price of success. In heartbreaking detail, he showed how a “godforsaken business” and the desire for acclaim in his career as a writer for Vince McMahon’s WWF led him into a spiritual wasteland. Today, a changed Russo has returned to prominence in wrestling — a world he both loves and that has, he acknowledges, broken his heart — as one of the writers and masterminds behind TNA, the world’s fastest-growing and most cutting-edge wrestling promotion. For two hours every Thursday, Russo’s ideas and words revolutionize wrestling on Spike TV; but what he achieves on Impact! on a weekly basis has been many years in the making. He’s been known as both the saviour of the WWF and the man who destroyed WCW, and Rope Opera: How WCW Killed Vince Russo is the true, behind-the-scenes story of, quite simply, the rise and fall and rebirth of professional wrestling. Many have tried to explain the inner workings of wrestling’s most turbulent era — but this is the first time someone in the centre of the maelstrom has ever laid everything bare. In returning to the page to take readers from the death of WCW to the rise of TNA, Vince Russo has crafted his most remarkable storyline: that a grown man can come to terms with, and find peace within, the insanity of the squared circle.

Review

"In the vernacular of professional wrestling itself, I think I've actually become a Russo 'mark' . . . Russo pretty much lets it all hang out here, warts and all." —blogcritics.org

"I recommend [this book] to individuals who are curious about the behind-the- scenes occurrences of a wrestling company, specifically TNA. Moreover, the 255-page book depicts Vince Russo's account of his professional life in wrestling and personal life as a Christian. If anything, it gives readers a unique portrayal of Vince Russo as a person as opposed to Vince Russo the character." —Slam! Sports

About the Author
Vince Russo is a Christian minister. He was the editor of "WWF Magazine," the head of the WCW's creative department, and the creative force behind the National Wrestling Alliance's Total Nonstop Action Wrestling promotion. He is the author of "Forgiven." He lives in Broomfield, Colorado.

Not what I expected
By Michael L. Sibbitt
I was really looking forward to this book, an insider's version of what went on with the failed WCW/Russo experiment. Russo does what a lot of saved people do, throw his religion in the mix, which would have been fine if this were billed as a religious book, but it wasn't. People are going to buy this book for the wrestling stuff, not so much for his religious beliefs. I was hoping for more names named, actual backstage stories, why he wrote certain angles and if he now thinks they were successful. The only in depth angles we were filled in on were the David Arquette and Bash at the Beach controversies. If the whole book would have been like those chapters, then I would have thought more highly of the book, but in it's current form, it was not worth the money I paid for it.

The ramblings of a scattered mind
By Ronny
I picked up this book with a very open mind. Of course I was well aware that many fans held him in very low esteem and blamed him for the death of WCW. I had heard and read lots of stories about Russo and his inability to write a coherent television show, but I also know that in the wrestling industry, burying an out of favor guy, can become quite popular. I was very curious to hear Vince Russo's side of the story.

Vince Russo's side of the story is that he really was to blame for WCW final years. Russo not only takes credit for WCW (David Arquette- WCW Champion), but rather than admitting it was a bad idea in hindsight, Russo defends it as a success. It's moments like these that only embolden his critics. Russo still tries to take credit for the successful "WWF Attitude Era". Even though any honest person would certainly credit him as having a hand in it, the reality is Vince McMahon and WWF talent were the driving force behind the success as evidenced by their continued success long after he was gone, WCW's descent into non-existence, and TNA's current product.

One need only to read this book, which reads as the creative...disjointed, illogical, scatological ramblings of somebody with attention deficit disorder, to understand that he is a writer that could only achieve success when heavily edited...something that would have helped greatly in this book. It strikes me that Russo could pitch you 20 creative ideas in as many minutes...the problem is only one (if any) would be of any value.

Throughout the book, I kept waiting to see some metamorphosis. Having discovered a renewed faith in God, I was really expecting Russo to exhibit some of the humility that I mentioned as lacking above. It never comes. What we get instead is the inclusion of a treatise for a television show called Rope Opera that Russo created during his hiatus from WCW. I've never read anything quite as sophomoric, crass, and utterly unreadable/unwatchable. No mature adult (or immature for that matter) would think this a good idea...but Russo thinks it's brilliant and beams like a proud father.

I really hope Vince Russo has a happy life. He's a father and husband and does not deserve the venom often directed at him. He's just a man trying to make a living and I for one hope he is very successful...as long as he stays far away from wrestling or any other creative endeavor.

Vince Russo latest book seems real at times and fake at others leaving you with mixed feelings on the book 3/5 stars
By alex fryling
I do have to say going into this book I loved the title of it. Was this a good book yes did it fulfill my expectations on what it was going to be like not that much. Don't get me wrong this was a very good book but there are certain things that make this book annoying. I will say this is an easy read for anyone. Yes it is around 250 pages or more but you never feel like it really is taking a long time to read. The one problem in my opinion with this book is there are too many chapters in the book. For being less than 300 pages there is no way there should have been 52 chapters in this book. I don't think this is Vince's fault but whoever was publishing this book should have thought on what it would look like when people bought the book. The one thing I will say is it covers all different aspects of Vince Russo's life. This did not just talk about his time in wrestling but it also went to talk about his family and how God help him become a stronger and different person. Now don't get me wrong as far as religion goes I am not one to judge because I don't go to church but they way this book is written at times by Vince Russo it seems like he is shoving views of God down are throat. He is not bad about it but when he talks about how much he changed in life and saying it is only because of god he sounds kind of phony. I say this because if you are truly going to change in life it needs to be more than just about god you as a person have to change as well. He does not even mention his wife in helping him change that much. He does give her a lot of credit to her and his kids in this book which is nice to hear. Another thing that is disturbing and once again this is his opinion it sounds like he was trying to justify how bad WCW got once he got there. Like there always seemed to be an excuse for the storylines that were going on. I will say the fall of WCW does not all lay on the shoulders of Vince Russo but in my opinion most of it does. It does seem a little weird that almost 99% of people attribute a lot of WCW''s fall to Vince Russo but yet him and probably some other people don't feel it is truly their fault. It just sounds fake. Overall this book is a solid book I am going to go with a 3/5 and a mild recommendation to pick up this book. I bought this book for $20 if you could get it between $10-$15 that is a much better buy. Not an Awesome book but not awful by any means.

When Prophecy Fails, by Leon Festinger, Henry Riecken, Stanley Schachter

2009 reprint of 1956 First edition. When Prophecy Fails [1956] is a classic text in social psychology authored by Leon Festinger, Henry Riecken, and Stanley Schachter. It chronicles the experience of a UFO cult that believed the end of the world was at hand. In effect, it is a social and psychological study of a modern group that predicted the destruction of the world, and the adjustments made when the prediction failed to materialize. "The authors have done something as laudable as it is unusual for social psychologists. They espied a fleeting social movement important to a line of research they were interested in and took after it. They recruited a team of observers, joined the movement, and watched it from within under great difficulties until its crisis came and went. Their report is of interest as much for the method as for the substance."-Everett C. Hughes, The American Journal of Sociology.

Landmark Example of Participant-Observation Research and Much Much More...
By Jayson
When Prophecy Fails is as relevant today as it was decades ago when a little doomsday cult predicted a flood that never came. I'm a professor in a social scientific-minded communication department. It seems that no matter what class I teach, I'm always using this book as an example. From a theoretical and research perspective, it's a great field study designed to test Festinger's ideas about cognitive dissonance. It also stands as a rigorous and meticulous example of the method of data collection via participant-observation. Readers will also appreciate the beginning material chronicling known failed predictions throughout history.

And the writing style is lucidly accessible and the detailed characterizations of the people involved and action unfolding are compelling enough for even the casual reader. I've always been a fan of Leon Festinger's work, but no matter one's personal givings about dissonance theory, it is tough not to appreciate the laborious efforts of this tireless and dedicated research team in producing this study. I admire those who are able to foresee real-world applications of their ideas in advance so as to be able to properly test them as the real-world events unfold. Festinger et al. were brilliant in this regard. A must-read for anyone interested in solid research methodologies and applied learning.

Flying Saucer Cult and Cognitive Dissonance
By St. Corbinians's Bear
A fascinating inside look at a 1950s flying saucer cult in Chicago. The world faced cataclysm, but the faithful would be taken to safety aboard a flying saucer at midnight. What happens after the prophecy fails is explained by Leon Festinger's theory of "cognitive dissonance." Other doomsday cults, such as the 1840s Millerites, have faced the same disappointment. Festinger says the "cognitive dissonance" caused by the "disconfirming event" may be resolved by one of a handful of means, but usually there is a burst of proselytization. In other words, the cult bounces back stronger than ever until subsequent disconfirming events (failed prophecies) force people to face reality.

"Cognitive dissonance" is a useful lens to view movements and even examine the stresses in one's own life when one finds oneself holding two contradictory "cognitions."

It is hard to understand how intelligent people could act like the subjects in When Prophecy Fails. Ultimately, the book is a tragedy about people's need to believe.

Detailed study of strange group
By Thomas Laperriere
A bit long in the telling and more analysis might have been helpful. I learned some important things about how people hold unreasonable beliefs and why they become hard to back away from. The role of group support. Those who were alone when disconfirming events happened doubted but those in company accepted the group rationalization. Interesting stuff!!

Review
"As pioneers in the field of cognitive therapy, Dr. Beck and his colleagues have applied their wealth of knowledge and experience with this modality to the treatment of substance abuse. The result is a well-written, lucid, thought-provoking book. Numerous case examples, filled with concrete recommendations regarding how to handle difficult situations, help make this book enormously valuable for clinicians working with substance abusers. Few books offer so much--a coherent theoretical framework, guidelines for conducting treatment, and a thoughtful analysis of the research literature. This is a much needed contribution to the field." --Roger D. Weiss, MD, McLean Hospital

"This book offers the reader some excellent support in working with those individuals who suffer from the disease of addiction. This book is both practical and helpful. Identifying and changing cognitive distortions common to drug and alcohol abusers both assists in obtaining a recovery program based on abstinence as well as maintaining sobriety. I particularly enjoyed the examples of specific sessions between client and therapist. They offer a clear and demonstrative view of how this material can be useful in almost any clinical setting." --Katie Evans, CADC NCACII, Addiction Counselor

"This is a wonderfully practical volume written in the classic style of Beck and collaborators. It sets forth masterful techniques in a clear straightforward fashion. The specific examples of therapy sessions are especially helpful for the beginning therapist. This book is much more than a manual because it deals with history and theory. However, in its role as a manual, it clearly tells the therapist "how to do it" in an interesting and readable fashion. I particularly like the coping with cravings section. The authors demonstrate their experience with substance abusers obtained during several controlled treatment studies involving cognitive therapy as one of the treatment modalities in drug dependent individuals. The cognitive behavioral techniques described for "coping and craving" show ingenuity and understanding of the problem. This book has nuggets of information even for experienced therapists, but it is a special gold mine for the novice." --Charles P. O'Brien, M.D., Ph.D., Chief of Psychiatry, VA Medical Center

"Aaron Beck, Fred Wright, Cory Newman, and Bruce Liese have written the definitive volume on cognitive therapy for substance abuse. From its detailed history of research and thinking about addiction, to its carefully outlined therapy sessions and testing material, to its specifics about concurrent treatment for anxiety, depression, and personality disorders, this book immediately becomes the primary reference in the field. Moreover, understanding the long history and success of Dr. Beck's pre-eminent therapeutic work for depression and anxiety gives readers inordinate confidence that the methods described here really work." --Stanton Peele, Ph.D., Author, The Truth About Addiction And Recovery

"This is a remarkable and valuable book! Dr. Beck's internationally heralded contributions to psychotherapy were first directed at disorders of mood and thought. He and his colleagues now apply his cognitive approach to substance abuse, with strong theoretical grounding, and with great clinical acumen. Because of its straightforward descriptions of technique, this book is of material value to both students and experienced clinicians alike." --Marc Galanter, M.D., Director, Division of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse and Professor of Psychiatry, New York University

"Beck's cognitive approaches to psychotherapy have had a greater impact, than any other innovation, on the treatment of depression, personality disorders, and substance abuse, and are classics in the psychiatric literature. This long awaited textbook expands on and explicates Aaron Beck's applications of cognitive therapy of the addictions with lucid, useful integration and wise explanation of theory and practice. The book is full of case material, concrete suggestions, and practical advice on how to formulate treatment plans, change patient beliefs, educate patients, alter response to external and internal stimuli and feeling states which lead to relapse and to develop new tools in coping with craving and managing life problems. It is a landmark work that will be widely read and will inform the practice of all therapists. Anyone interested in clinical work with addicted patients will be richly rewarded by studying this treasure trove of wise and easy to apply techniques that enhance treatment results." --Richard J. Frances, Director, Department of Psychiatry, Hackensack Medical Center and Professor of Clinical Psychiatry, UMDNJ - New Jersey Medical School

"[This] textbook explicates and expands on Aaron Beck's applications of cognitive therapy to the addictions with lucid, useful integration and a wide explanation of theory and practice....The techniques used are clearly described and can be used for treatment outcome research to validate the cognitive approach versus other approaches, and to look for subpopulations in which cognitive therapy makes special sense." (General Hospital Psychiatry 2001-01-18)

"I will refer to and recommend this book as a bountiful clinical guide....Bolstered by outcome data, this wise and hopeful book will greatly advance integration of cognitive therapy into addiction treatment programs." (Contemporary Psychology 2001-01-18)

"In Cognitive Theory of Substance Abuse, Beck and his colleagues...help us to understand the way the addicts' subjective interpretations of intrinsic and extrinsic stimuli lead to addictive behavior. They offer a carefully developed theoretical model, a sizable number of carefully structured therapeutic techniques, and illustrative examples of therapist–patient exchanges....One important aspect of this cognitive format is that its techniques can be combined with other therapeutic approaches to addiction, such as the use of AA, family supports, and social network supports....Practitioners of these modalities would do well to adapt the cognitive approach in their work. Such applications will indeed be of great value to an emerging body of substance abuse practitioners, whose techniques will inevitably be eclectic in nature." (American Journal of Psychiatry 2001-01-18)

"The strength of the authors' approach is exemplified by the clarity and concision of their writing, and by the operationalization of their constructs....Constitutes a 'gold standard' for the field." (Journal of Cognitive Psychotherapy 2001-01-18)

"Dr. Beck's stamp is most definitely on this book. He brings a certain clarity to a direct, in-depth discussion of the use of cognitive therapy to treat substance abuse. This is a rich, utilitarian book for clinicians." (Journal of Psychoactive Drugs 2001-01-18)

Exceeded my Expectations
By AnthonyOhio
I bought this book because I had been out of college/my Counseling major for over 20 years. This book was VERY beneficial for helping me to review my terms and the theory behind Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. The Chapter lay-outs were also well thought out in that they provided me with an easy transition/smooth flow of information pertinent to my needs. Definitely a well written book.
