Jordan Steele (The Judge) has been hired as a bodyguard for Jessica Winters, Slammer's new step-daughter. Security is usually not his thing, but he finds himself unable to refuse the offer after meeting her in person. Jessica Winters wants nothing to do with The Judge or any other biker, for that matter, especially after being raped by one of the Devil's Rangers, three years before. When she learns that her life is in imminent danger, however, she reluctantly agrees and finds herself in the care of a man who makes her tremble in more ways than one. **This book is intended for readers 18 years old or older due to the explicit language, sexual situations, and violence that may be upsetting to some readers. This is a work of fiction and is not meant to be a true depiction of a motorcycle club. It was written for entertainment only.

Too slow for me
By Tory Richards
Whew! I enjoyed Resisting the Biker but the pacing for this one was way too slow for me. There was a lot going on and a lot of different characters making it hard to follow. The Judge and Jessica didn't even meet until chapter 13, didn't share their first kiss until chapter 32! While the story-line was okay, it needs editing. Also, in my opinion, it's hard to picture sweet and calm Judge as a killer. There were a couple of mild sex scenes thrown in there of a couple of women who make a play on him and both times he goes soft, in the middle of a blowjob mind you. The relationship between Jessica and the Judge seemed more like friendship, not much passion between them. And the way it ended left a lot to be desired. Their story between them wasn't really finished.

Loved the third book in this series about Jordan and Jessica. I don't want to give anything away, but their story will leave you satisfied. The only problem is that I need more! Can't wait for the next book.

Great information that you probably won't get from other Spring Boot books
By Monkey Toed Freak
I recently starting learning Spring Boot and it's been very interesting. Developers will know though that writing the code and having it running locally isn't even half the job. Customisation for environments, deployment tasks and adding monitoring etc. can add just as much time.
That's why I was very pleased with this book, I was half expecting it to be a series of small tutorials about coding with Spring Boot but it takes a very unusual approach that covers the edge cases of development and has a strong focus on what Spring Boot brings to the table. The Application Testing chapter is very good and cover using Mockito, Cucumber and Spock.
The deployment chapters cover building an executable jar, accessing environment specific variables and most interesting for me, creating Docker images. It also covers application monitoring, another aspect Spring Boot gives you for free.
I'm still reading through the book but it's definitely one that's full of information that you won't normally get in development books. It's well written and easy to dive into because the chapters are all self contained.
If you're interested in Spring Boot, I strongly recommend this in addition to one about developing in Spring Boot.

The Myth of Race: The Troubling Persistence of an Unscientific Idea, by Robert Wald Sussman

Although eugenics is now widely discredited, some groups and individuals claim a new scientific basis for old racist assumptions. Pondering the continuing influence of racist research and thought, despite all evidence to the contrary, Robert Sussman explains why―when it comes to race―too many people still mistake bigotry for science.

Review
Not only is this book a significant contribution to the view of race and racism in traditional ‘four-field’ anthropology in the U.S., but it is also important to the understanding of global notions of contemporary racism…The Myth of Race encourages us to understand where stereotypes and misinformation fit in our consideration of whether and how notions of biological race remain pervasive in today’s discourse and policy. (Yolanda T. Moses Times Higher Education 2014-12-11)

Explores how the faulty concept of race embedded in our culture affects where we live, go to school and work. It influences our choice in friends and our treatment in the healthcare and justice systems. (Jeff Adachi San Francisco Examiner 2016-04-21)

Sussman does a masterful job of tracing racist thought in western Europe and the U.S. from 15th-century polygenics through the eugenics of the 20th century to the continued racism and anti-immigration stances of today’s radical Right…Although the racists at whom Sussman directs his message are unlikely to read it or to credit it if they do, this book should be in every library, from high school through public to university, in hopes that it will affect some minds before they become completely shuttered by prejudice. (L. L. Johnson Choice 2015-04-01)

The idea of race, writes the author, is a cultural rather than biological reality. Tribes always believed that strangers were subhuman, but they could overcome their inferiority by joining the tribe―e.g., converting to Christianity or adopting Roman citizenship… Today, since racism is politically incorrect, Sussman maintains, supporters have migrated en masse to the anti-immigration movement… Sussman delivers a lucidly written, eye-opening account of a nasty sociological battle that the good guys have been winning for a century without eliminating a very persistent enemy. (Kirkus Reviews 2014-08-15)

Sussman, an anthropology professor at Washington University in St. Louis, explores and explodes the concept of race. He contends that, in the face of a longstanding scientific consensus that race possesses no biological basis, many people still mistakenly believe that traits like aggression, intelligence, and generosity can be traced to it. Noting that racial distinctions between humans have no biological basis is not new, Sussman makes his contribution by exposing the ways that academic ‘science’ is invoked to authorize an outmoded concept. He traces the history of ideas about race, moving briskly from the Spanish Inquisition to Linnaeus and Kant, and offering a detailed discussion of eugenics. Lest readers imagine this is all in the distant past, Sussman devotes his last three chapters to the funding mechanisms that keep racist research alive today. He shows that ‘science’ has been used in efforts to overturn civil rights legislation, and he examines the ways racist discourse has become intertwined with immigration policy. This book, which is both provocative and commonsensical, will be useful to scholars, but may also spark a broader conversation. (Publishers Weekly 2014-08-25)

Robert Sussman’s penetrating study of the major figures who constructed concepts of race lays bare the personal biases, enmity, and corruption that influenced the intellectuals and politicians who framed modern industrialized societies. It also reveals unexpected heroes whose clear-minded insights into human diversity presaged our modern understanding. The Myth of Race is a suspense-filled and richly scholarly tour de force. (Nina G. Jablonski, Evan Pugh Professor of Anthropology, Pennsylvania State University)

What is most remarkable is how Sussman manages to tie in past attitudes toward race with ongoing political developments. He demonstrates a seamless continuity of current attitudes with past ones in a way I have not seen attempted elsewhere, and in my view he succeeds brilliantly: the final chapters, in particular, make chilling reading. This is a book written straight from the heart, and it reads that way. (Ian Tattersall, author of Race? Debunking a Scientific Myth)

Every teacher and every student should be exposed to the facts in this book. It is time to give up the myth of race and to start raising a generation of people who know the truth. This isn't about a belief; it's about the truth.

Exceptionally good
By Lisa Nel
Well researched. He explains the origins of misunderstood terms like 'eugenics and 'polygenic' theories. Reads easily and yet full of good scientific research. Highly recommended especially for those who've been inculcated by the popular media to believe in the evolutionary origins of race.

Open to Debate: How William F. Buckley Put Liberal America on the Firing Line, by Heather Hendershot

A unique and compelling portrait of William F. Buckley as the champion of conservative ideas in an age of liberal dominance, taking on the smartest adversaries he could find while singlehandedly reinventing the role of public intellectual in the network television era.

When Firing Line premiered on American television in 1966, just two years after Barry Goldwater’s devastating defeat, liberalism was ascendant. Though the left seemed to have decisively won the hearts and minds of the electorate, the show’s creator and host, William F. Buckley—relishing his role as a public contrarian—made the case for conservative ideas, believing that his side would ultimately win because its arguments were better. As the founder of the right’s flagship journal, National Review, Buckley spoke to likeminded readers. With Firing Line, he reached beyond conservative enclaves, engaging millions of Americans across the political spectrum.

Each week on Firing Line, Buckley and his guests—the cream of America’s intellectual class, such as Tom Wolfe, Noam Chomsky, Norman Mailer, Henry Kissinger, and Milton Friedman—debated the urgent issues of the day, bringing politics, culture, and economics into American living rooms as never before. Buckley himself was an exemplary host; he never appealed to emotion and prejudice; he engaged his guests with a unique and entertaining combination of principle, wit, fact, a truly fearsome vocabulary, and genuine affection for his adversaries.

Drawing on archival material, interviews, and transcripts, Open to Debate provides a richly detailed portrait of this widely respected ideological warrior, showing him in action as never before. Much more than just the story of a television show, Hendershot’s book provides a history of American public intellectual life from the 1960s through the 1980s—one of the most contentious eras in our history—and shows how Buckley led the way in drawing America to conservatism during those years.

Review
“Hendershot lauds Buckley for the intelligence, honesty, wit, civility, and lan with which he developed meaningful dialogues … A cogent reminder of what political broadcasting could be.” (Booklist (starred review))

“Clever…a good introduction not only to Buckley and smart conservative thought but (strange concept) a sadly disappeared politics of civility.” (Los Angeles Times)

“William F. Buckley and his long-running, unique show Firing Line provides a window (if sometimes a curved mirror) through which to see a turbulent and transformative time in American politics. If you want to step into a time machine for a look back, this book is your ticket.” (Ira Glasser, American Civil Liberties Union Executive Director 1978-2001 (retired), currently Board President, Drug Policy Alliance)

“Hendershot does more than tell the history of a uniquely influential show and personality; her thorough, compelling, and very readable book provides a three-decade journey through the center of the nation’s intellectual life.” (Publishers Weekly)

“A thoroughly researched work replete with intelligence, admiration, balanced criticism, and even a bit of nostalgia.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))

From the Back Cover

On his pioneering TV program Firing Line, William F. Buckley debated his opponents with insight, openness, and respect—a far cry from the shouting matches of today—and set the stage for the triumphant return and ultimate victory of the conservative movement.

When Firing Line premiered in 1966, just two years after Barry Goldwater’s devastating defeat, American liberalism was ascendant. Though the left seemed to have decisively won the hearts and minds of the electorate, the show’s creator and host, William F. Buckley—relishing his role as a public contrarian—made the case for conservative ideas, believing that his side would ultimately win because its arguments were better. As the founder of the right’s flagship journal, National Review, Buckley spoke to like-minded readers. With Firing Line, he reached beyond conservative enclaves, engaging millions of Americans across the political spectrum.

With his magazine, syndicated column, radio appearances, and television show, Buckley pioneered the role of the pundit in the modern media age. Yet unlike so many of today’s talking heads, he refused to pander to his audience’s basest prejudices or to hype hot-button cultural issues.

Buckley himself was an exemplary host: he never appealed to emotion and prejudice; he engaged his guests with a unique and entertaining combination of principle, wit, fact, and a truly fearsome vocabulary; and he displayed genuine affection for many of his adversaries. If Buckley were alive today, he would be appalled at the decline in insight, respectability, and cogency in conservative discourse—and in political discourse generally.

Drawing on archival material, interviews, and transcripts, Open to Debate provides a richly detailed portrait of this widely respected ideological warrior, showing him in action as never before. Telling much more than just the story of a television show, Heather Hendershot crafts a history of American political and intellectual life from the 1960s through the 1980s—one of the most contentious eras in our history—and shows how Buckley emerged as the vanguard voice of modern conservatism.

enjoyable and funny than I would have expected from a book about ...
By My Banana has a First Name
This book is a fascinating mix of "you are there as it happens" and careful analysis and retrospect of one of the longest running shows on TV. Meticulously researched and masterfully crafted, it is more thrilling, enjoyable and funny than I would have expected from a book about Firing Line. I'm a bleeding heart liberal, but one can't help admire Buckley as observed through the lens of Professor Hendershot. I highly recommend it no matter what political stripe you may wear, if you yearn for open debate and literary pugilism, this is the book we have been waiting for, and a welcome respite from the election season.

WFB, an American icon
By Vickie Mullins
A great read in spite of the author trying to color the book with her liberal crayons...Just ignore her and enjoy a journey back into civil political and intellectual discourse of the highest level....When the fly of her bias comes buzzing, just swat it and keep going...You will be rewarded by her good research and excellent writing....

The Blandys of Madeira: 1811-2011, by Marcus Binney

Founded on a remote Portuguese island in the Atlantic in the last years of the Napoleonic War, the Blandy firm has never ceased to trade in the unique wine for which Madeira is so famous. But the portfolio of businesses owned, developed, and run by the family over the years includes many of the central concerns of the period — from coal and shipping to newspapers and hotels. Not many companies are still owned and run by the same family after 200 years, and now Marcus Binney tells the remarkable story of this survival and growth with verve and insight. It’s an outstanding account of how a prominent family adapted their business and their expectations of it to survive and flourish into the 21st century, constructing and conserving some impressive buildings along the way and, especially, developing and maintaining an iconic and renowned product in one of the world's great wines.

There is never a dull moment in Marcus Binney's well-illustrated tale of the ups and downs of the family enterprise that Blandy founded; if you know someone who is a connoisseur of Madeira wine, this is the perfect book to give them to read as they sit and sip a wine that is as rich in history as it is in character and complexity. Salon Hooked me within the first few pages because it's beautifully written, meticulously researched aand actually brings you right into the very heart of the family. Blackpool Gazette A delightful book. Yorkshire Post
