About the Author
Charlie Guo lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, in the heart of the world he portrays. A software engineer by trade, he has also founded two companies. While getting his undergraduate degree at Stanford, he founded the education-tech company ClassOwl. ClassOwl partners with Stanford and other schools to improve student-teacher communication and productivity, and in startup-storybook fashion it was sold by Guo’s cofounders in 2015 to Branch Metrics. After graduation, he launched a second company, FanHero, which was accepted into Y Combinator, a prestigious startup accelerator program based in Silicon Valley. His own experiences working to make his ideas fly exposed him to the inner workings of the startup culture and inspired him to reach out to a fascinating mix of tech founders to share their experiences.

Quick read on how to scale the unscalable in startup world

I enjoyed this quick read that gave some real-world stories about the tough early stages of founding a startup. The best parts were the third-person summaries of the companies at the beginning of each chapter, and I wish there had been more of that. The other 90% of the book is in what I would consider "lightly-edited" interview format (e.g. "So we would have, I don't know, let's say incorporation - I can't remember what our actual services were, but we'd have an incorporation service - and we'd set the price..."). On pages 1-2, I thought, I can't read like this, the colloquial format will drive me crazy. By page 5, I didn't even notice.

The stories of each startup are interesting, but come to a common theme: if you do "unscalable" things and do them well, you'll eventually find a way to scale them. And also, always start with the customer.

Thought this book was great and should be required reading for every founder or would-be entrepreneur. It's similar to Jessica Livingston's "Founders At Work", with an emphasis on growth at the earliest stages of companies.

Unscalable is a collection of interviews with founds of high growth start up companies, most of which are associated with Y Combinator (a startup accelerator). If you are the founder of a high tech startup or are considering becoming one I recommend it. The content is very raw but it's a quick read and the learnings are very clear.

It would have been great if the companies interviewed included some larger or more successful companies, since the vast major of companies interviewing in the book have not yet reached a level of sustainable success. It makes you question the learnings since many of these companies may eventually fail despite their experience so far. So, take everything you read here with a grain of salt.

A must read!

Globalization and America’s Trade Agreements” is a book that should be read carefully by every serious student and practitioner trade policy. Mr. Krist had a distinguished career in trade policy as a senior U.S. Government trade agreements negotiator and subsequently as a trade policy advisor for a major electronics industry group. He has thought long and hard about important trade policy issues such as the pros and cons of trade liberalization through multilateral, regional and bilateral agreements, special interest influence relating to agriculture and intellectual property protection, using trade agreements to promote democracy and economic development, and the impact of trade agreements on labor rights and environmental protection, and made useful recommendations for America’s trade policy in the future.

Krist believes that there are two major problems with America’s current approach to trade agreements. First, prior trade agreements have significant gaps that permit “neo-mercantilist” countries (read Japan and China) to pursue policies such as currency manipulation that injure U.S. workers and industry. Second, further multilateral trade liberalization through WTO negotiations “have apparently failed” and existing bilateral trade agreements are limited in economic benefits, thus the United States needs a new strategy “that will promote its commercial and foreign policy interests and strengthen the global trading system.”

Krist recommends several approaches to address these problems. First, he suggests a more interventionist approach to counter neo-mercantilist policies such as currency manipulation, but then notes the economic and political reasons why such an approach may not always be desirable. Second, he advocates the completion of two major regional agreements – the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) (currently under negotiation between the United States and 11 other Pacific Rim countries) and the Trans Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) (currently under negotiation between the United States and the European Union). Third, he advocates the return to multilateral trade negotiations using TPP and TTIP as templates for further multilateral liberalization.

These recommendations are sound and should be the basis for future U.S. trade policies. My only (minor) disappointment with “Globalization and America’s Trade Agreements” is the minimal attention given by Krist to improvements in trade facilitation and the WTO’s new Trade Facilitation Agreement (which, in fairness, was not concluded until after publication of the book). Trade facilitation improvements and reductions in other non-tariff barriers to trade will likely have a much larger impact on trade in the future than additional tariff reductions.

An outstanding book about international trade agreements

The international trade agreements that the United States has joined over the past 50 years have been an important ingredient in the creation of today’s globalized world. Globalization has yielded vast economic gains for many, but has also resulted in significant economic disruption for others. The role that trade agreements have played in this process is not well understood and has been the subject of some wildly differing views. Most economists estimate that these agreements have brought major economic benefits to the world economy, including the American economy. Others have demonized these agreements, blaming them for many of the world’s economic ills. Author Bill Krist does an outstanding job in the book helping the reader understand what the issues are associated with these agreements, why such varying views exist about these agreements and the policy options for moving forward.

When the Bell family first arrived in the village of Baddeck in 1885, Alexander Graham Bell had already made his fortune with the invention of the telephone a decade earlier. When they returned to Baddeck a year later, they found a perfect spot for their summer home, Beinn Bhreagh, on a headland that offered a panoramic view of lakes, islands and hills; it was bathed in light from sunrise to sunset.
It was here over the next 30 years where Alec worked on experiments in early aviation and hydrofoils while Mabel contributed both time and resources to the community. Beinn Bhreagh was a happy place, a home designed for comfort and company where all were welcome. This is the story of this period, illustrated with striking informal photographs of family, scientists and Baddeck residents.

Content and Organization

Part I, Materials of Manufacture, discusses the basic materials used in manufacturing: metals, plastics, and ceramics. Chapters 1-3 identify and classify these materials by their atomic makeup, similarities, and differences. Chapters 4 and 5 explain how the materials are extracted from raw materials, and how the materials are processed. Chapter 6 reviews the many classification systems used for common metallic materials, and then discusses the properties and characteristics that lead to their selection and application.

The detailed coverage in Part I allows the student to proceed to a study of product manufacturing that uses these materials. Where appropriate, newly developed materials, processes, and methods are presented throughout the text.

Part II, Survey of Manufacturing Processes, discusses specific manufacturing processes and their capabilities. Chapter 7 is a new chapter on the specifications used in design and their relationship to the capabilities of the manufacturing process to be used. Subsequent chapters cover casting, cold and hot forming, forging, powdered metal processes, machining, plastics manufacturing, the joining of materials, and non-traditional manufacturing processes. Chapter 18 on the corrosion and protection of metals concludes Part II.

Part III, Measurement and Quality Assurance, Chapters 19 and 20 introduce measurement and quality assurance, with particular emphasis on tolerance, measurement, and calibration.

Part IV, Manufacturing Systems, Chapters 21 and 22 discuss the design, tooling, and production aspects of manufacturing. These final chapters also introduce modern automation methods, including computer-aided design (CAD) and rapid prototyping, as designers' tools; plus computer aided manufacturing (CAM) topics, including computer numerical control (CNC) and industrial robotics. The integration of these technologies is discussed as computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) and flexible manufacturing systems (FMS), culminating in total factory automation.

About the Author
Mark Aoyagi, PhD, is director of sport & performance psychology and an assistant professor at the University of Denver. Mark earned a PhD in counseling psychology with an emphasis in sport psychology from the University of Missouri in 2006 and was the sport psychology post doctoral fellow at the University of Southern California. Prior to that, he completed a bachelor s in exercise and sport science and a bachelor s in psychology from the University of Utah in 1999 and a master s in kinesiology, with a sport psychology emphasis, from Georgia Southern University in 2001. Mark is a recognized sport psychology consultant and has worked with several Division I athletic departments as well as professional and Olympic athletes. He is a licensed psychologist in the state of Colorado, a certified consultant, AASP (Association of Applied Sport Psychology) and is listed in the USOC Sport Psychology Registry. His areas of expertise include performance excellence, team effectiveness, and sport as a mechanism for personal growth and social change. Mark is active in several professional organizations including the American Psychological Association and the Association for Applied Sport Psychology; and has publications and national conference presentations on the topics of theory informing practice, team effectiveness, ethics, and training and supervision among others. Artur Poczwardowski, PhD, is an associate professor at the University of Denver. Artur received his PhD in exercise and sport science with specialization in psychosocial aspects of sport from the University of Utah, Salt Lake City in 1997, a master s in psychology from Gda�sk University, Poland in 1991, and a master s in coaching and physical education from the University of Physical Education in Gda�sk, Poland in 1989. Since 1991, Artur has consulted with athletes and teams from numerous sports (e.g., tennis, golf, hockey, judo, squash, team handball, soccer, track and field, diving, rowing, speed skating). He is a certified consultant, AASP (Association of Applied Sport Psychology) and is listed in the USOC Sport Psychology Registry. Artur has over 25 publications (in professional journals and as book chapters). He has delivered over 60 professional presentations on national and international levels and over 25 invited and educational lectures and workshops. His publications and professional presentations focus on sport psychology practice for performance enhancement and psychological well-being, coach-athlete relationships, and coping strategies in elite performers. He served as an associate editor for The Sport Psychologist (2004-2006) and currently serves on its editorial board.

I highly recommend this book to any reader interested in the field of Sport Psychology. Whether you want to learn what this field is even about, hear what the experts have to say, work on developing your own theory, or learn how to handle athletes/performers as a coach or counselor; this book will be very helpful! It provides multiple well established Sport Psychologist's philosophies and theories. The book illustrates each psychologist's own approach to working with athletes, coaches, performers, etc. as well as their broad theory of what works and what does not work within Sport Psychology. It is very valuable to see how each psychologist approaches the field, even though there is some overlap between chapters.

Each chapter is a selection of great sport and performance psychologist in the field that allows for numerous narratives about their theories of excellence. As a first year sport psychologist, this taught me the importance of developing an idea for what we consider to be excellent. For athletes and coaches, it offers a perspective on how you can be consulted in the field. Advice for consulting ranges everywhere from NBA, Olympics, performing arts, and even to youth activities. This book is a great accumulation of literature already in the scientific community.

Another Great Zeller Guide to Success!

I've been reading Dirk Zeller's books for many years, focusing on sales and time management. I don't think anything he writes is particularly revolutionary, but his common sense approach makes his works "must reads" for anyone interested in sales.

Pros:
-Lots of useful, immediately relevant information to sales and real estate sales
-Insight into current technology and social media
-Lots of common sense tips and tricks
-Easy to read, well written

Cons:
-The "Dummies" series is good for doses of information, but less useful for a big picture. Although Zeller is an old pro at writing and imparting information, the general "Dummies" format does limit his holistic approach.

I work a lot with real estate agents and I thought I knew most of the tricks but Dirk Zeller's "Success as a Real Estate Agent" had some items that I didn't realize that a real estate agent did now and when I showed this book to one real estate agent friend, even she was "Whoa, I didn't know about that. I should do that."

The main thing that I got out of "Success as a Real Estate Agent for Dummies" is that one has to be proactive. Just listing a property or taking a prospective buyer to a house isn't what makes a real estate agent. Being proactive and using all the tools available will make the difference between someone who passed the test to get the license and the person who wants to be successful as an agent.

Zeller doesn't let the reader down in that he continues the well-laid out, organized tradition of the "For Dummies" line. He covers everything from online tools, to social media, to presentation, to marketing oneself, to generating more referrals. If I wanted to be a real estate agent in the current market, this book gives me a better idea of what I need to do to be a successful one.

I am contemplating becoming a real estate agent, and this book was a great overview of what to expect, what life of a real estate agent is like, and some of the challenges real estate agents face. It is informative and entertaining, and has convinced me to go ahead and pursue my license. No doubt it will help me hit the ground running and be handy for a long time to come.

A great book into the world of understanding numbers underlying business performance. The author has done a remarkable job of simplifying the complex world of value investing and security analysis for the layman. Book provides an overview of basic financial instruments such as Bonds, Stocks, Funds, and Indexes as well as goes into detail of how to calculate a business' intrinsic value.
